Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate three-dimensional positional change of the condyle using 3D CT after bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO) in skeletal class III patients. Patients and methods: Nine patients who underwent BSSRO for mandibular set-back in skeletal class III malocclusion without facial asymmetry were examined. Miniplates were used for the fixation after BSSRO. 3-D CT was taken before, immediately after, and 6 months after undergoing BSSRO. After creating 3D-CT images using V-works 4.0TM program, axial plane, coronal plane, & sagittal plane were configured. Three dimensional positional change, from each plane to the condyle, of the nine patients was measured before, immediately after, and 6 months after undergoing BSSRO. Results: 1. The mean value of mandibular set-back for nine mandibular prognathism patients was 7.36 mm (± 2.42 mm). 2. In the axial view, condyle is rotated inward immediately after BSSRO (p < 0.05), comparing with preoperative but outward 6 months after BSSRO comparing with postoperative (p < 0.05). 3. In the axial view, condyle is moved laterally immediately after BSSRO (p < 0.05), comparing with preoperative but regressed 6 months after BSSRO comparing with preoperative (p > 0.05). 4. In the frontal & coronal view, there is changed immediately after and 6 months after BSSRO, comparing with preoperative but no statistical difference. Conclusion: These results indicate that three-dimensional positional change of the condyle in skeletal class III patients is observed lateral displacement & inward rotation immediate after BSSRO, but the condyle in 6 months after BSSRO tends to regress to preoperative position.

Graphitized nanodiamonds were conveniently prepared by the laser irradiation of colloidal solution using various solvents. The nanodiamonds were converted into a fully graphitized onion-like structure, which became a cage-like mesoporous structure by the degradation of graphitic layers. Alcohols, acetone, and acetonitrile are more efficient solvents for the graphitization compared to water and hydrocarbons. Therefore the number and morphology of the graphitic layers can be simply controlled by the solvent and laser-irradiation duration. We suggest a graphitization model, in which the photocatalytic oxidation of the solvent accelerates the graphitization of nanodiamonds. The graphitized nanodiamonds were easily doped with the nitrogen and sulfur atoms in a controlled manner. In particular, the spherical graphitic layers were preferentially doped with the pyrrolic nitrogen that enhances remarkably electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction.

Graphic Abstract

Graphitized nanodiamonds were conveniently prepared by the laser irradiation of colloidal solution, and exhibit a remarkable electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction.

We developed a simple and sensitive colorimetric biosensor in the form of microparticles by using polydiacetylene (PDA) vesicles encapsulated within a hydrogel matrix for the detection of phosphinothricin acetyltransferase (PAT) protein, which is one of the most important marker proteins in genetically modified (GM) crops. Although PDA is commonly used as a sensing material due to its unique colorimetric properties, existing PDA biosensors are ineffective due to their low sensitivity as well as their lack of robustness. To overcome these disadvantages, we devised immunohydrogel beads made of anti-PAT-conjugated PDA vesicles embedded at high density within a poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEG-DA) hydrogel matrix. In addition, the construction of immunohydrogel beads was automated by use of a microfluidic device. In the immunoreaction, the sensitivity of antibody-conjugated PDA vesicles was significantly amplified, as monitored by the unaided eye. The limit of detection for target molecules reached as low as 20 nM, which is sufficiently low enough to detect target materials in GM organisms. Collectively, the results show that immunohydrogel beads constitute a promising colorimetric sensing platform for onsite testing in a number of fields, such as the food and medical industries, as well as warfare situations.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

The pituitary tumor transforming (PTTG) gene family comprises PTTG1, 2, and 3. Forced expression of PTTG1 (securin) induces cellular transformation and promotes tumor development in animal models. PTTG1 is overexpressed in various human cancers. However, the expression and pathogenic implications of the PTTG gene family in hepatocellular carcinoma are largely unknown. Gene silencing using short interfering RNA (siRNA) has become an efficient means to study the functions of genes and has been increasingly used for cancer gene therapy approaches. We report that PTTG1, but not PTTG2 and 3, was highly and frequently expressed in liver cancer tissues from patients and highly in SH-J1, SK-Hep1, and Huh-7 hepatoma cell lines. Adenoviral vector encoding siRNA against PTTG1 (Ad.PTTG1-siRNA) depleted PTTG1 specifically and efficiently in SH-J1 hepatoma cells, which resulted in activation of p53 that led to increased p21 expression and induction of apoptosis. The depletion of PTTG1 in HCT116 colorectal cancer cells exhibited a cytotoxic effect in a p53-dependent manner. Ad.PTTG1-siRNA-mediated cytotoxic effect was dependent on expression levels of PTTG1 and p53 in hepatoma cell lines. Huh-7 hepatoma cells, once transduced with Ad.PTTG1-siRNA, displayed markedly attenuated growth potential in nude mice. Intra-tumor delivery of Ad.PTTG1-siRNA led to significant inhibition of tumor growth in SH-J1 tumor xenograft established in nude mice. In conclusion, PTTG1 overexpressed in hepatoma cell lines negatively regulates the ability of p53 to induce apoptosis. PTTG1 gene silencing using siRNA may be an effective modality to treat liver cancer, in which PTTG1 is abundantly expressed. (HEPATOLOGY 2006;43:1042–1052.)
