Escherichia coli RNase P is a ribonucleoprotein composed of M1 RNA and C5 protein. Previously, analysis of RNA aptamers selected for C5 protein from a synthetic RNA library showed that C5 protein could bind various RNA molecules as an RNA binding protein. In this study, we searched cellular RNA motifs that could be recognized by C5 protein by a genomic SELEX approach. We found various C5 protein-binding RNA motifs derived from E. coli genomic sequences. Our results suggest that C5 protein interacts with various cellular RNA species in addition to M1 RNA.
Effect of Antithrombotic Therapy on Bleeding after Argon Plasma Coagulation for Gastric Neoplasms

Background/Aims: Postprocedural bleeding is known to be relatively low after argon plasma coagulation (APC) for gastric neoplasms; however, there are few studies proving the effect of antithrombotic agents. This study aimed to analyze the incidence of delayed bleeding (DB) based on antithrombotic agents administered and to identify the risk factors for DB in APC for gastric tumors. Methods: A total of 785 patients with 824 lesions underwent APC for single gastric neoplasm between January 2011 and January 2018. After exclusion, 719 and 102 lesions were classified as belonging to the non-antithrombotics (non-AT) and AT groups, respectively. The clinical outcomes were compared between the two groups, and we determined the risk factors for DB in gastric APC. Results: Of the total 821 cases, DB occurred in 20 cases (2.4%): 17 cases in the non-AT group and three cases in the AT group (2.4% vs 2.9%, p=0.728). Multivariate analysis of the risk factors for DB confirmed the following significant, independent risk factors: male sex (odds ratio, 7.66; 95% confidence interval, 1.02 to 57.69; p=0.048) and chronic kidney disease (odds ratio, 4.51; 95% confidence interval, 1.57 to 13.02; p=0.005). Thromboembolic events and perforation were not observed in all patients regardless of whether they took AT agents. Conclusions: AT therapy is acceptably safe in gastric APC because it does not significantly increase the incidence of DB. However, patients with chronic kidney disease or male sex need to receive careful follow-up on the incidence of post-APC bleeding.

This paper gives details of the pulse-position modulation technique applied in the case of a room-temperature operated GaAs laser diode for communication purposes. The analog audio input signal is quantized by the sampling pulses and the sampled pulses are stretched. The amplitude of the quntized signal is defined with respect to time by comparing it with the ramp amplitude in the comparator. For the synchronization of the receiver with the transmitter, a pair of synchronizing doublet is derived from the stable multivibrator and its frequency is decreased in monostable multivibrator. The comparator output and the synchronizing doublet are fed into the modulator, which puts out a laser pulse every time it is carried by position-modulated laser pulses interspaced by the synchronizing doublets. At the receiver the analog information is reconstructed. The technique can be incorporated in the development of a short-haul point-to-point voice communication system using the laser diode.
Introduction of Brillouin Light Scattering for Spintronics Research

We will explain about Brillouin Light Scattering (BLS), which is an in-elastic light scattering with magnon of the magnetic samples. Magnon excitation frequency (or spin-wave (SW) resonance frequency) is determined by the dispersion relations of SW as a function of the basic magnetic properties of the samples, sample’s geometrical structure, SW wavevector, and external magnetic field. In BLS measurement, we varied the external magnetic field and obtained the basic magnetic properties of the sample by non-linear regression process, so that we can determine the saturation magnetization, anisotropy energy, exchange stiffness. In addition, we can also determine the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (iDMI) energy density by using non-reciprocal nature of the SW with non-zero iDMI. Since BLS is based on optical measurement, BLS has a lateral resolution of the laser beam spot size (~50 um), and BLS can measure the magnetic properties of the sub-nm ferromagnetic films. In this lecture, we will discuss about basic principles of BLS measurement and application of BLS for spintronics devices researches.

Haematological features pertaining to aerobic capability were compared between diploid and triploid specimens of the Far Eastern catfish, Silurus asotus. No significant differences between diploids and triploids were found for the haematocrit value, total haemoglobin, and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration, while the mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin, and plasma glucose concentration were significantly higher in triploids than in diploids, and the number of red blood cells was significantly lower in triploids than in diploids. The oxygen consumption rate did not differ significantly between diploid and triploid fish ( P>0.05). Nevertheless, the respiratory frequency was higher in triploids than in diploids ( P< 0.05). Triploids were characterized by a lower concentration of circulating blood cells, and aquaculture practice should consider the need for a lower surface to volume ratio.
간경변 환자에서 CTP, MELD, MELD-Na 점수의 단기 사망률 예측에 대한 비교 분석

목적: MELD (model for end-stage liver disease)는 간이식 대상자의 우선 순위를 정하는 기준으로 상용되며, 말기 간질환 환자의 예후 판정에 유용한 지표이다. 최근 MELD 점수에 혈중 나트륨(Na) 수준을 반영한 MELD-Na이 MELD보이 단기 사망률을 예측하는 데 보다 유용할 것이라는 의견이 제시되었다. 그러나 아직 국내 환자를 대상으로 한 MELD-Na의 유용성 평가 자료는 없다. 따라서 이번 연구에 서는 간경변 환자들을 대상으로 Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP), MELD, MELD-Na 세 가지 점수의 사망률 예측에 대해 비교 분석하여 MELD-Na이 타 지표보다 단기 사망을 예측하는데 보다 유용한 것인가를 판정하고자 하였다. 대상 및 방법: 1996년 1월부터 2006년 9월까지 고려대학교 안산병원 소화기내과에 입원하였던 355명의 간경변증 환자를 대상으로 후향 분석하였다. 간암, 만성 신부전, 중증 심폐질환자, 악성 종양이 있는 경우는 제외하였다. 입원 당시 각 점수에 따른 누적 생존율은 Kaplan-Meier 생존함수를 이용하여 구하였고 log rank test로 생존기간의 차이를 검증하였다. 또한 AUC를 이용해 3개월, 그리고 1년 사망률에 대한 위의 세가지 점수의 예측능을 비교 분석하였다. 결과: 세 가지 지표 모두가 점수에 따른 누적 생존율의 차이가 유의하였다(p<0.001). 3개월 단기 사망을 예측하는 데 있어 각 지표의 AUC는 CTP 0.828, MELD 0.845, MELD-Na 0.862 (p>0.05)이었으며 1년 내 사망에 대한 각 지표의 AUC는 각각 0.792, 0.800, 0.831(p>0.05)로 유의성은 없었으나 MELD-Na이 가장 높은 경향을 보였다. 다변량 분석에서는 세 가지 지표 중 MELD-Na만이 3개월 사망과 유의한 관련성이 있었다. 결론: 국내 간경변 환자를 대상으로 분석한 세 가지 예후 평가 점수 체계 중 MELD-Na은 우수한 단기 사망 예측능을 보였다. 아직 좀 더 많은 환자를 대상으로 한 대규모의 연구가 필요할 것으로 생각하나 만성 간질환 환자에서 단기 사망과 예후에 대한 지표로서 MELD-Na을 우선적으로 사용할 것을 고려해 볼 수 있다. Background/Aims: MELD-Na (model for end-stage liver disease with incorporation of serum sodium) was suggested to provide better survival prediction than MELD alone for patients with end stage liver disease. However, there is no data verifying the usefulness of MELD-Na for predicting short term mortality of cirrhotic patients in Korea. This study was aimed to determine whether MELD-Na would be more accurate in predicting short term mortality than other scoring systems such as Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) or MELD. Methods: Data from 355 patients admitted due to liver cirrhosis were retrospectively reviewed. The cumulative survival rates were obtained. Prediction of mortality rate for three months and one year were analyzed using the area under the receiver`s operating characteristics curve (AUC). Results: One hundred patients (28%) died during the study period. All of the three systems showed significant differences in the cumulative survival rate according to the scores on admission (p<0.001). The AUC of CTP, MELD, and MELD-Na in predicting three-months mortality were 0.828, 0.845, and 0.862 (p>0.05), and the AUC of each score system for death within one year were 0.792, 0.800, and 0.831, respectively (p>0.05). The AUC of MELD-Na in predicting short term death were the highest, although it was not statistically significant. Multivariate analysis showed that only MELD-Na was significantly related to three-month mortality (p=0.012). Conclusions: MELD-Na is more appropriate in predicting short term mortality, but larger scale studies are needed to confirm the superiority of MELD-Na to MELD and CTP in patients with liver cirrhosis.
