        Kdr allelic variation in a sodium channel gene from a population of South Carolina Heliothis virescens (Fabricius)

        Mutations at V421M and L1029H in the hscp sodium channel gene are known to contribute to knockdown resistance (kdr) in the Woodrow, Dalzell, and PTJ strains of H. virescens (tobacco budworm) from the cotton fields of South Carolina, USA. In the IS6 region of the sodium channel gene, the frequencies of the mutant allele methionine in the Woodrow and Dalzell strains were 0.07 and 0.1, respectively. For the IIS6 region, the frequencies of the mutant allele histidine in Woodrow and Dalzell strains were 0.175 and 0.263, respectively. In the PTJ strain, the frequencies of methionine and histidine alleles were 0 and 0.1, respectively. The Hpy3 allele, which is strongly linked to the histidine mutant allele, was also found in Woodrow and Dalzell strains. In addition, we found a new allele, which is one nucleotide different from Hpy3, called Hpy3-1, and found that it is also linked to histidine.         Effects of Vanadium Carbides on Hydrogen Embrittlement of Tempered Martensitic Steel

        Precipitation of V carbides is known to suppress the hydrogen-embrittlement (HE) phenomenon as well as to increase material strength. Despite increasing attention to V carbides, there have been few systematic and quantitative investigations on their effects on HE resistance. This study reveals the role of V carbides on the HE behavior of tempered martensitic steel while eliminating other factors, such as chemical composition of other elements, mechanical strength, and dislocation density. The amount of trapped hydrogen increased with increasing V content, whereas the best HE resistance was attained at 0.2 wt% V and it decreased with further V addition. V carbide was considered as a non-diffusible hydrogen-trapping site in this study. However, excessive V content led to the formation of large undissolved carbides that gave rise to brittle fracture and decreased HE resistance. This study suggests that improved HE resistance can be achieved by minimizing the size and amount of undissolved V carbides.

        Economic Costs of Cancelling Nuclear Power Plants on Regional Economy

        한국의 지역 경제는 지방자치를 시행하고 있지만 아직까지 중앙정부의 경제에 귀속되어 있다. 이에 지방정부의 경제 정책은 중앙 정부의 정책 결정에 크게 영향을 받을 수밖에 없다. 특히 지역 경제가 단일 국책 사업이나 산업군 또는 제한된 경제 분야에 크게 의존 할 때 중앙 정부의 결정은 절대적으로 영향력이 클뿐 아니라, 지역경제에 미치는 영향은 단기적으로나 장기적으로 지역경제를 손상시킬 수 있다. 이 연구는 40 년 가까이 원자력 발전의 중심지였던 경상남도의 사전계획된 원자력 발전소를 취소하겠다는 중앙 정부의 결정이 지역경제에 어떻게 영향을 미칠 것인가를 분석하였다. 본 연구의 분석방법은 발전소 건설이 아닌 기회비용과 사회 갈등 비용을 계산하여 비용을 추정하여 투자 감소가 어떠한 의미를 가지고 있는지 분석하였다. 기회비용은 원자력 발전소의 수명이 60년이기 때문에 60년 추정이 채택되고 20 년 동안 투자는 줄어들어 드는 것으로 예측하였다. 분석결과 정부 정책의 변경은 지역경제 뿐만 아니라 사회적 갈등까지 만들게 되었으 며 지역경제는 매우 큰 영향을 받게 되어 지역 경제에 매우 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 향후 지역경제의 영향력을 고려할 때 중앙정부의 경제정책의 결정에 신중함이 필요하다. Regional economies can be greatly affected by the policy decision of the central government. Especially when regional and local economies depend greatly on a sole or limited number of sectors the magnitude of the impact from the central government decision will damage the economies both in the short and long term. This paper, taking this as a backdrop, analyzes the central government decision to cancel the preplanned nuclear power plants in the North Gyung Sang Province that has been the center of nuclear power generation for nearly 40 years in the country. This study utilized cost estimation by calculating opportunity costs of not building power plants and social conflict costs, which would mean reduced investments. For opportunity costs, due to the life span of 60 years of nuclear power plants, estimation of 60 years was adopted, while reduced investment was captured with a 20 year time horizon. This paper, then, concludes implications from the analysis.

        Inkjet Printing of Silica Aerogel for Fabrication of 2-D Patterned Thermal Insulation Layers

        Aerogels have the lowest thermal conductivity (< 0.2 W m −1 K −1 ) among known materials owing to the presence of pores, which constitute over 90% of the structure. Aerogels have mainly been commercialized for use as a thermal insulation material for building applications, such as walls and pipes. Herein, a silica aerogel thin fi lm was fabricated by using a commercial and cost-effective HP inkjet printer. Next, silica aerogel ink was synthesized by mixing hydrophilic silica aerogel powder, solvent, and other organic additives. The thickness and pattern of the silica aerogel thin films were easily controlled by increasing the number of printing cycles and patterning by using a drawing software. The printed silica aerogel thin fi lm had a smooth surface and thickness with well-distributed ink particles. Further, the aerogel had a unique structure comprising nanopores and nanonetworks. The thermal conductivity of the silica aerogel thin fi lm was approximately 0.05 W m −1 K −1 at 30–300 °C. Inkjet printing of silica aerogels is expected to be a strong candidate for thermal insulating applications in micro-scale systems such as batteries and electronic chips.

        Effect of C/N ratio on polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) accumulation by Cupriavidus necator and its implication on the use of rice straw hydrolysates

        The effects of carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio in simulated rice straw hydrolysates using glucose and ammonium chloride on polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) accumulation by Cupriavidus necator was investigated. In general, PHA accumulation rate was higher under higher degrees of N-deficient conditions (e.g., C/N ratio of 360:1) than lower degrees of N-deficient conditions (e.g., C/N ratio of 3.6:1 and 36:1). Also, the most PHA accumulation was observed during the first 12 h after the PHA accumulation initiation. This study showed that the similar PHA accumulation could be achieved by using different accumulation periods depending on C/N ratios. N source presence was important for new cell production, supported by approximately ten times greater PHA accumulation under the N-deficient condition (NH₄Cl 0.01 g/L) than the N-free (without NH₄Cl) condition after 96 h. C/N ratio of the rice straw hydrolysate was approximately 160:1, based on the glucose content, and this accumulated 0.36±0.0033 g/L PHA with PHA content of 21±3.1% after 12 h. Since external C or N source addition for C/N ratio adjustment increases production cost, an appropriate accumulation period may be used for PHA accumulation from organic wastes, based on the PHA accumulation patterns observed at various C/N ratios and C and N concentrations.

        The Effect of UG in the L2 Acquisition of Long-Distance Binding

          This study deals with two theoretical issues relevant to binding, namely argument/adjunct distinction and the finiteness domain effect, by investigating the interlanguage of 44 Korean native speakers learning English. Various types of LD binding were tested to see the effects of the contrasts between argument and adjunct anaphors and between finite and non-finite clause boundaries. The results show that Korean speakers allow LD binding significantly more freely when the anaphor is in an adjunct position, and they also do so when binding takes place over a non-finite clause. These results are rather surprising because in Korean the argument/adjunct distinction does not play a role for binding purposes, and because neither Korean nor English has the finiteness domain effect for LD binding. Accordingly, the result of this experimental study supports the view that interlanguage is UG-constrained.

        Testing the exchange rate data for the parameter change based on ARMA-GARCH model

        In this paper, we analyze the Korean Won/Japanese 100 Yen exchange rate data based on the ARMA-GARCH model, and perform the test for detecting the param-eter changes. As a test statistics, we employ the cumulative sum (CUSUM) test for ARMA-GARCH model, which is introduced by Lee and Song (2008). Our empirical analysis indicates that the KRW/JPY exchange rate series experienced several parameter changes during the period from January 2000 to December 2012, which leads to a fitting of AR-IGARCH model to the whole series.
