Hot tensile behavior of SiC-, NbC-, and MgO-reinforced LM25 metal matrix composites for high-temperature applications

        Jayakumar T.,Annamalai K. 한국세라믹학회 2023 한국세라믹학회지 Vol.60 No.2

The main aim of this research was to investigate the mechanical behavior of aluminum (LM25) alloy hybrid metal matrix composites for high-temperature applications. The L25 alloy is hybrid reinforced with varying silicon carbide (SiC), niobium carbide (NbC), and magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticle compositions. Hybrid particle-reinforced composites are manufactured by means of a liquid manufacturing technique. The hot tensile behavior of the LM25 matrix and hybrid composites was examined under the temperature condition 30 °C–400 °C as per ASTM B557 and ASTM E8M standards using a hot tensile test rig. In addition, the surface morphology of the LM25 alloy and SiC-, NbC-, and MgO-reinforced composites was investigated using scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX). The results of the surface morphology investigation of the composites revealed that the SiC, NbC, and MgO particles were homogenously scattered within the matrix and revealed clearer interface bonding. In tensile test, the LM25 alloy/ 3wt% SiC, NbC, and MgO (LMSMN-3) composite showed a yield and tensile strength around 230.82 MPa and 251.71 MPa, which was 25% larger than the LM25 alloy materials, whereas LM25 alloy/1wt% SiC, NbC, and MgO (LMSMN-1) and LM25 alloy/2wt% SiC, NbC, and MgO (LMSMN-2) composites showed a yield and tensile strength of 176.45 MPa, 203.71 MPa,192 MPa, and 211.32 MPa, respectively, which was 23% and 16.75% higher than the LM25 alloy under room temperature condition. Also, at elevated temperatures such as 200℃ and 400℃, the LMSMN-3 composite exhibited a maximum increase in the tensile properties, i.e., 48.28% at 200℃ and of 61.12% at 400℃.

      • Control of plasma profiles in DIII-D discharges

        Gohil, P,Evans, T E,Ferron, J R,Moyer, R A,Petty, C C,Burrell, K H,Casper, T A,Garofalo, A M,Hyatt, A W,Jayakumar, R J,Kessel, C,Kim, J Y,La Haye, R J,Lohr, J,Luce, T C,Makowski, M A,Mazon, D,Menard, Published jointly by The Institute of Physics and 2006 Plasma physics and controlled fusion Vol.48 No.a5

<P>Active control of plasma profiles is an essential requirement for operating within plasma stability limits, for steady-state operation and for optimization of the plasma performance. In DIII-D, plasma profiles have been actively controlled using various actuators in the following manner: (a) real time closed loop control of the <I>q</I> profile evolution using electron cyclotron heating and neutral beam injection as actuators; (b) active control of the density and pressure profiles in quiescent H-mode and quiescent double barrier plasmas using electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) and pellet injection; (c) active control of the edge profiles to suppress edge localized modes using resonant magnetic perturbation with toroidal mode number <I>n</I> = 3, (d) real time control of the current density profile to suppress neoclassical tearing modes using localized deposition of co-ECCD.</P>

      • Poster Session : PS 0146 ; Neurology : Memory Impairment in Young Diabetic Males: An Alarming Concern!

        ( Parul Kodan ),( Jayakumar J ),( Seemanthani T S ),( Sydney Dsouja ) 대한내과학회 2014 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.1

Background: With diabetes rapidly affecting even the younger population makes it alarming for the physicians to understand its various complications. Although the effects of DM on peripheral nervous system are well established, the effects of Diabetes(DM) on CNS have been less clear. Even a modest effect on cognitive function will have signifi cant public health implications. Our study is one of the unique study from Indian subcontinent where we aimed to compare the memory profi le of 30-55 years old men with Type II DM with age matched controls and to fi nd whether any relationship exists between DM control and memory function in this age group. Methods: The study design was a cross sectional clinical study of Diabetic males of age group 30-55 years and age matched controls for memory testing. The study included men of 30-55 years diagnosed to have Type 2 DM.All patients with previous neurological disorders or hypothyroidism were excluded. All patients, after valid consent, were tested for memory testing using PGI Memory Scale. Test was objectively scored scores and ranged from 0-100.All patients with Diabetes were also tested for HbA1c. Results: Average memory score in case group was 80.76±8.75 and it was 87.68±7.39 in control group which was statistically signifi cant showing better memory scoring in control group. When long term diabetes control was compared it was seen that there is a trend of higher HbA1c having poor memory scoring. Conclusions: Our study showed presence of mild cognitive impairment in young males with diabetes which is an alarming revelation. This pathbreaking fi nding is an alarming indication to the clinicians and neurologist to look for this complication in young patients of diabetes. Also our study showed trend of higher HbA1c had poor memory scoring underscoring the importance of strict diabetes control especially in young diabetes.
