        Assessment on Recovery of Cesium, Strontium, and Barium From Eutectic LiCl-KCl Salt With Liquid Bismuth System

        This study provides an assessment on a proposed method for separation of cesium, strontium, and barium using electrochemical reduction at a liquid bismuth cathode in LiCl-KCl eutectic salt, investigated via cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDS). CV studies were performed at temperatures of 723-823 K and concentrations of the target species up to 4.0wt%. Redox reactions occurring during potential sweeps were observed. Concentration of BaCl2 in the salt did not seem to influence the diffusivity in the studied concentration range up to 4.0wt%. The presence of strontium in the system affected the redox reaction of lithium; however, there were no distinguishable redox peaks that could be measured. Impedance spectra obtained from EIS methods were used to calculate the exchange current densities of the electroactive active redox couple at the bismuth cathode. Results show the rate-controlling step in deposition to be the mass transport of Cs+ ions from the bulk salt to the cathode surface layer. Results from SEM-EDS suggest that Cs-Bi and Sr-Bi intermetallics from LiCl-KCl salt are not thermodynamically favorable.

        It takes a disaster like a tsunami for people to recognise our common humanity and to act. The true nature of globalisation can only be found in how we choose to use the good things that globalisation offers, and alleviate the bad. Our experience of globalisation of economic, social and environmental questions exposes us to both positive and negative influences, but presents us with opportunities to work together for the common good. Local globalisation can help us maintain our common humanity at other times, by thinking globally and acting locally. The energy for acting locally is being focused through local government because unlike national and state governments, local government is part of its community. By their very nature, local councils can take the principles enshrined in globalisation and translate them into local action, whether economic, social or environmental. All cities must come to see themselves as players in the global partnership envisaged by Millennium Development Goal Eight which embodies local globalisation. Local giobalisation is about having a shared vision to alleviate poverty and improve human development. It is a tonic for the economic, social and environmental challenges which often look insurmountable when viewed globally. Having a shared vision brings us together as one global community, where we stand or fall on our ability to work together. Local globalisation gives us the perspective to measure our progress, our wins and losses, to guide the way we allocate funds and effort, know when we are on the right track or need to change the way we do things.

        Locacorten Vioform Ototoxicity Upon Guinea Pig Middle Ear Application

        Locacorten Vioform (Novartis UK) is frequently prescribed forotomycosis. Its component, Clioquinol, also has anti-bacterial properties. Up to this point, itsototoxic potential has not been evaluated. Our objective aims to evaluate Locacorten Vioform’spotential ototoxicity when applied directly to the middle ear cavity. Materials andMethods: We performed an experimental prospective animal study in our animal researchcenter with 20 Hartley guinea pigs divided into 2 groups. The first group (experimental) wastreated with Locacorten Vioform in one ear and with a physiologic saline solution in the other. The second group (positive control) was treated with concentrated gentamycin in one earand physiologic saline in the other. Auditory brainstem response measurements were obtainedbefore and after three sets of injections. Statistics were analyzed using a varianceanalysis with repeated measures. The histological state of cochlear outer hair cells was comparedbetween the two groups using scanning electron microscopy. Results: Average hearingloss in ears treated with Locacorten Vioform was 32.1 dB, compared with a 2.5 dB averageloss in the saline-treated ears. Ears treated with gentamycin lost an average of 33.0 dB. There were clinically and statistically significant differences between the two ears of the guineapigs in both groups (p<0.001). Scanning electron microscopy revealed severe pericochlearand cochlear inflammation and ossification in the Locacorten Vioform-treated ears. Gentamycin caused significant destruction of outer hair cell architecture. Conclusions: LocacortenVioform induces a hearing loss similar to that caused by gentamycin when applieddirectly to the middle ear of a guinea pig model. Electron microscopy indicates a pericochlearand cochlear inflammatory reaction with ossification.

        An Empirical Investigation of Cash

        This study examines the determinants of cash-holding levels for US hotel firms. Using data from 67 publicly traded US hotel firms from 1997 to 2008, we construct a weighted least-squares (WLS) regression model to test the roles of seven firm-specific factors in establishing corporate cash-holding levels. Firm size, cash flow from operations, and dividend paying correlated negatively with cash reserves, while leverage, investment-opportunity set, and capital expenditures were positively related to cash-holding levels. Net working capital was insignificantly related. These findings support the trade-off theory in general and the precautionary motive and the transaction motives specifically as important drivers of cash holdings decisions in today`s hotel firms.

        The Effects of Cash Holdings on Firm Value in the Casino Industry: A Comparison of Contrasting Cash- Holding Policies

        본 연구는 2000년부터 2012년까지 미국증시에 상장된 55개 카지노 기업의 531개의 연도별 관측치를 샘플로 하여 기업가치에 대한 현금보유의 효과가 대조를 이루는 현금보유정책에 따라 차이가 있는지를 비교분석하였다. 분석을 위해 현금비율을 삼분위로 나누어 연구샘플을 세 그룹으로 분류하였으며 각 샘플기업의 시장가치는 토빈의 Q값으로 측정하였다. 토빈의 Q값이 세 그룹 간에 차이가 있는지를 검증하기 위해 일원분산분석과 사후검증인 Scheffe분석을 실시하였다. 분석결과, 상위 삼분위 그룹의 평균 토빈의 Q값은 중간 삼분위 그룹과 하위 삼분위 그룹보다 크게 나타났지만, 중간 삼분위 그룹과 하위 삼분위 그룹 사이에는 평균 토빈의 Q값에 유의한 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 산업 평균값보다 높은 현금비율을 유지하는 카지노 기업들이 시장으로부터 상대적으로 가치를 높게 평가 받고 있다는 것을 의미한다. 본 연구의 실증결과를 비추어 볼 때 현재 카지노 기업의 현금보유정책과 의사결정은 목표 현금보유량에 기초한 절충이론으로 설명되어진다 할 수 있다.

        Revisiting old friends: Developments in understanding Histoplasma capsulatum pathogenesis

        Histoplasma capsulatum is a dimorphic pathogenic fungus and causative agent of histoplasmosis, which is a respiratory and systemic infection that is particularly severe in immunocompromised hosts and represents the fungal homolog of tuberculosis. In highly endemic regions, the majority of individuals have been infected and carry the organism in a persistent latent form that is a danger for reactivation if host defenses are suppressed. H. capsulatum has been a model organism for intracellular pathogenesis and fungal morphogenesis for decades. New genomic information and application of approaches for molecular genetic manipulation are shedding new light on virulence mechanisms.
