      • INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES ON FIRE RESEARCH

        In this paper presented are recent international activities on fire research. After a long history of exchanging ideas in individual international groups, the International Association for Fire Safety Science (IAFSS) was founded in 1985 at its first Symposium, and in 1988, it became a registered charity in England and Wales. The primary objectives of the association are encouraging research in the science of preventing and mitigating the adverse effects of fires and of providing a forum for presenting the results such research. In order to implement the objectives, the Association has held a series of Symposia. At the same time, regional activities have been performed to expand the activities of IAFSS into every individual country. The Asia-Oceania Association for Fire Science and Technology (AOAFST) was founded in 1992 at its first Symposium and the First European Regional IAFSS Symposium was held in Zurich in 1995. Extensive activities in fire research have been performed in Asian and Oceanian countries.

        Increase in Plasma HDL-Cholesterol Concentration in Goats Fed Sesame Meal Is Related to Ether Extract Fraction Included in the Meal

        Previously, we reported that a diet including sesame meal (SM) increased plasma total and high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol concentrations in goats. In the present study, the components in the sesame meal that can increase plasma total and HDL-cholesterol concentrations have been examined. In experiment 1, we gave goats defatted sesame meal diet (DSM) to investigate the influence of ether extract fraction remained in sesame meal. Corn gluten meal diet (CGM) was also fed to goats as a high-protein diet to examine the influence of high dietary protein level caused by usage of sesame meal. Plasma total and HDL-cholesterol concentrations of goats fed DSM and CGM did not change during experimental periods though they were elevated by feeding SM. In experiment 2, the influence of sesame oil and corn oil added in diets on plasma total and HDL-cholesterol concentrations in goats was investigated. Plasma total and HDL-cholesterol concentrations were increased by feeding both corn oil diet and sesame oil diet. In conclusion, the increase in plasma HDL-cholesterol concentration by feeding sesame meal was resulted by the effect of ether extract fraction including sesame oil or some lipid-soluble components remained in sesame meal.

        絵本の読み聞かせによる日韓表現考察が日本語学習者に与える影響: 初級翻訳レベルを中心に

        本研究の目的は、日韓の見方・考え方から生じる表現の違いに気づく事が初級 日本語翻訳レベルの学生にどのような影響を与えるかを調査する事である。 本研究では初級翻訳レベルの授業を受講する韓国人日本語学習者男女30人を対 象に調査した。授業では日本語の絵本とそれを翻訳した韓国語の絵本を読み聞 かせ、日韓の翻訳の違いについて発表、討論を行い、簡単なアンケートとミニ テストを実施した。アンケートの結果、絵本の読み聞かせ授業は、初級翻訳レベ ルの学習者に日本語ではなぜこう表現するのかという見方・考え方の違いに 気付かせるだけでなく、教材が絵本である事や輪になって座り絵本を読むと いう授業の進め方に興味を持った学生の学習意欲を向上させる効果も確認出来 た。またミニテストの結果からも授業に対する関心、集中力の向上が確認出来 た。調査の結果、絵本の読み聞かせによる日韓表現考察は、初級日本語学習者に とって日本語への興味、関心、積極性の向上を促す上で肯定的な効果が期待でき る事が明らかになった。

        In Silico Analysis of the Interaction of Avian Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptors and Dioxins to Decipher Isoform-, Ligand-, and Species-Specific Activations

        <P>The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) mediates toxic responses to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-<I>p</I>-dioxin (TCDD) and other dioxin-like compounds (DLCs). Avian species possess multiple AHR isoforms (AHR1, AHR1β, and AHR2) that exhibit species- and isoform-specific responses to ligands. To account for the ligand preference in terms of the structural features of avian AHRs, we generated in silico homology models of the ligand-binding domain of avian AHRs based on <I>holo</I> human HIF-2α (PDB entry <ext-link ext-link-type='pdb' xlink:href='3H7W' xlink:type='simple'>3H7W</ext-link>). Molecular docking simulations of TCDD and other DLCs with avian AHR1s and AHR2s using ASEDock indicated that the interaction energy increased with the number of substituted chlorine atoms in congeners, supporting AHR transactivation potencies and World Health Organization TCDD toxic equivalency factors of congeners. The potential interaction energies of an endogenous AHR ligand, 6-formylindolo [3,2-<I>b</I>] carbazole (FICZ) to avian AHRs were lower than those of TCDD, which was supported by a greater potency of FICZ for in vitro AHR-mediated transactivation than TCDD. The molecular dynamics simulation revealed that mean square displacements in Ile324 and Ser380 of TCDD-bound AHR1 of the chicken, the most sensitive species to TCDD, were smaller than those in other avian AHR1s, suggesting that the dynamic stability of these amino acid residues contribute to TCDD preference. For avian AHR2, the corresponding residues (Val/Ser or Val/Ala type) were not responsible for differential TCDD sensitivity. Application of the three-dimensional reference interaction site model showed that the stabilization of TCDD binding to avian AHRs may be due to the solvation effect depending on the characteristics of two amino acids corresponding to Ile324 and Ser380 in chicken AHR1.         Rhetoric of “Will I See You?”: Based on an Analysis of Fictional Conversations

        where causal usage overshadows formality, will is regularly used instead of shall because shall sounds too formal. Since it becomes hard to distinguish will from other modal verbs, the rhetorical impact of will in the question “Will I see you tonight?” has been lost. This paper analyzes the rhetoric of “Will I see you tonight?” by restoring the original characteristic of will that is often overlooked in casual English usage. To accomplish this goal, this paper focuses on the first-person subject question with will and its illogical nature of asking the hearer about the speaker’s own will. The aim of the authors is to show how this illogical nature is tied to its rhetorical meaning, by extracting a number of examples such as movie dialogues and lyrics. “Will I see you tonight?” is not a sheer question but a powerfully rhetorical statement because this question demands the speaker pours his/her heart out, no matter what kind of consequence awaits. “Will I see you tonight?” is neither challenging nor accusatory but instead is illogical. It is for this reason that it works as an extremely romantic proposal.

        A Constraint-Based Approach to Korean Loanwords

        This paper presents an analysis of Korean loanwords within the framework of Optimality Theory. It argues that the constraints FAITHFULNESS and MARGIN-R, which condition the preservation of original input forms, play a crucial role in loanword phonology, and that they interest with other costraints describing the unmarked characteristics of the basic syllable structure. It also argues that a system of both dominant constraints and ranked, vioable constraints selects forms. This research strongly suggests that a ranking of constraints, BR, M-R ≫ FIATHFULNESS ≫ PARSE ≫ ALIGN-R ≫ FILL ≫ ONS ≫ -COD exists in Korean loanword phonology. Moreover, it is demonstrated that two possible actual forms are characterized by the ranking differences between violable constraints, and that overparsing is a relialbe strategy for rescuing unsyllabifiable segments. This analysis shows how Optimality Theory works in loanword phonology.

      • Issues in Euthanasia Jurisprudence in Japan

        In Japan, euthanasia is defined as an act to ease the pain of patients and let them die peacefully in the final stage of a terminal illness, in a situation of serious physical suffering with no prospect of recovery, and we have had several jurisprudence cases concerning acts called “euthanasia”, none of which ended with the defendant judged not guilty, although the courts mentioned the conditions required for a lawful act. After describing the jurisprudence and extracting the common background of these cases, we discuss euthanasia as it affects and is related to the practice of medicine, doctor-patient relationship, circumstances around doctors and lack of patient’s will.

      • Detection of 1270 nm Emission from Singlet Oxygen due to Photodynamic Therapy in vitro and in vivo.

        Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a cancer treatment modality which utilizes the cytotoxicity of the active singlet oxygen derived from irradiation of a tumor accumulated photosensitizer. As the oxygen in the singlet state radiates an emission of 1270nm wavelength when it decays to the triplet state, detection of the emission helps us to understand the mechanism of PDT or to evaluate photosensitizers. We detected the 1270nm emission from photosensitizers Photofrin and ATX-SI0 in vitro and in vivo by means of high sensitive NIR detectors. We obtained the maximum amount of singlet oxygen at irradiation wavelength of 665-670nm from a HeLa tumor in a nude mouse which is injected with ATX-S10.

      • Effect of Seeding Layers on Preparation of PLZT Thin Films by Sol-Gel Method

        $(Pb_xLa_{1-x}) (Zr_yTi_{1-y})O_3$ (PLZT) thin films with electrooptic effect are promising for the optical application such as display or light shutter. However, it is difficult to use inexpensive and transparent glass substrates because the conventional process for preparation of PLZT requires temperatures above $600^{\circ}C$. In order to deposit a perovskite PLZT thin films at low processing temperatures through alkoxide route, we have offered several seeding processes which reduce the activation energy for crystallization. In this study, we optimized the stacking structure of multilayered PLZT for obtaining single phase perovskite at lower temperatures. As a result, ferroelectric PLZT thin films with different compositions were successfully prepared at a temperature as low at $500^{\circ}C$.
