A new series of pyridazine, pyrazoles, pyrazolidine-3,5-dione, Semicarbazide, thiosemicarbazides, hydantoin, thiohydantoins, 1,2,4-triazoles, S-triazolo[3,4-b]-1,3,4-thiadiazoles incorporated indirectly into salicylamide moiety at position 2 were synthesized. Also the synthesis of novel series of 3-salicylamido-2-hydroxypropyl-amino derivatives were prepared. Several of these compounds were screened for antiinflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic and ulcerogenic activities.

The present investigation deals with the synthesis of some new salicylamidoacetyl sulfonamides 3a,b, salicylamido ethylacetate 4, salicylamido acetic acid hydrazide 5, which is considered as the key intermediate for the synthesis of several series of new compounds such as salicylamido pyrazol 6 and pyrazolone 1. N-imido-derivatives 9, 10, 11, thiadiazole 13, oxadiazole 14, 15, Schiffs bases 16a-f. Cyclocondensation of Schiffs bases with thioglycolic acid gave thiazolidinone 18a-c while with acetylchloride afforded azitidinones 19a-c and with acetic anhydride gave 1,4-benzoxazepine-3,5-dione. Some of the compounds were tested for their analgesic and antiinflammatory activities as well as ulcerogenic effects. Some derivatives were more effective than salicylamide and ulcerogenic activity was variably lowered .
Synthesis and Preliminary Antimicrobial Screening of New Benzimidazole Heterocycle

A series of 2-methylbenzimidazole incorporated to different heterocycles through ethyl or carbamoylethyl groups at position 1 of benzimidazole were synthesized. Also 3-(2-methylbenzimidazol-1-yl)propanoic acid hydrazide incorporated with semicarbazides and thiosemicarbazides were prepared. Moreover, the triazole 5e underwent Michael addition and alkylation reaction. Some of the newly synthesized compounds showed considerable antimicrobial activity against gram positive, negative bacteria and yeast.

This paper presents the results of an investigation aimed at developing reinforced concrete beams consisting of precast permanent U-shaped reinforced mortar forms filled with different types of core materials to be used as a viable alternative to the conventional reinforced concrete beam. To accomplish this objective, an experimental program was conducted and theoretical model was adopted. The experimental program comprised casting and testing of thirty beams of total dimensions 300 9 150 9 2,000 mm consisting of permanent precast U-shaped reinforced mortar forms of thickness 25 mm filled with the core material. Three additional typical reinforced concrete beams of the same total dimensions were also cast to serve as contro specimens. Two types of single-layer and double-layers steel meshes were used to reinforce the permanent U-shaped forms; namely welded wire mesh and X8 expanded steel mesh. Three types of core materials were investigated: conventional concrete, autoclaved aerated lightweight concrete brick, and recycled concrete. Two types of shear connections between the precast permanent reinforced mortar form and the core material were investigated namely; adhesive bonding layer between the two surfaces, and mechanical shear connectors. The test specimens were tested as simple beams under three-point loadings on a span of 1,800 mm. The behavior of the beams incorporating the permanent forms was compared to that of the control beams. The experimental results showed that better crack resistance, high serviceability and ultimate loads, and good energy absorption could be achieved by using the proposed beams which verifies the validity of using the proposed system. The theoretical results compared well with the experimental ones.

Here, we report a self-assembled polymeric micellar immunomodulator (SPI) for enhanced cancer treatment based on cationic amphiphilic polymers. To obtain the cationic amphiphilic polymer, the hydrophobic all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA) was conjugated with a hydrophilic low-molecular-weight PEI (<SUB>Low</SUB>PEI, M<SUB>n</SUB> = 1.8 kDa). The ATRA-<SUB>Low</SUB>PEI conjugates could self-assemble in aqueous media, forming micelles with a strong positive charge (~+40 mV) and particle sizes of ~70 nm. Compared to conventional therapeutic agents (e.g., cisplatin), the SPI exhibited enhanced anti-cancer activity regardless of drug resistance. After mechanistic in vitro cell death studies, we revealed that the mechanical disruptive force generated by the cationic charge of SPI primarily induced necrotic cell death. Furthermore, the organelle fragments induced by the necrotic cell death triggered antitumoral immune responses. Therefore, SPI induced synergistic effects of the cationic charge-induced necrosis and antitumoral immune responses could produce an effective cancer treatment. In addition, the SPI was shielded by hyaluronic acid (HA/SPI complex) to enhance its tumor selectivity in vivo. Finally, the HA/SPI complex accumulated selectively into tumor sites after systemic administration into tumor-bearing mice, exhibiting effective antitumoral effects without systemic toxicity. Therefore, this technology holds great potential for translation into a clinical cancer treatment.
3-Dimensional fasciectomy: A highly efficacious common ground approach to Dupuytren’s surgery

Background Numerous Dupuytren’s fasciectomy techniques have been described, each associated with unique surgical challenges, complications and recurrence rates. We describe a common ground surgical approach to Dupuytren’s disease; 3-dimensional fasciectomy (3DF). 3DF aims to address the potential contributors to the high recurrence rate of Dupuytren’s disease and unite current limited fasciectomy practice that varies considerably between surgeons. Methods We describe the 3DF principles; raising thin skin flaps (addressing dermal involvement), excising diseased palmar fascia with a 3−5 mm clearance margin (treating highly locally recurrent conditions) and excising the vertical septae of Legueu and Juvara (providing deep clearance, hence addressing all potentially involved pathological tissue). The surgical outcomes between traditional limited fasciectomy (LF) and 3DF are compared. Results From the 786 operations included (n=585), postoperative recurrence rates were significantly lower for the 3DF group (2/145, 1.4%) than the LF group (72/641, 11.2%) (P= 0.001), and the time to recurrence was significantly longer (5.0±0 years vs. 4.0±0.2 years; P<0.0001). With recurrence excluded, there were no differences between the postoperative complication rates for 3DF (5/145, 3.5%) and LF (41/641, 6.4%) (P=0.4). Conclusions Our results suggest that 3DF leads to lower recurrence rates and a longer disease- free period for patients, without increasing complications. 3DF provides a safe, efficacious, common ground surgical approach in the treatment of Dupuytren’s flexion deformity.

Synthesis and Antimicrobial Activity of New Substituted Anili-nobenzimidazoles

A series of benzimidazole derivatives carrying different heterocycles such as 1,2,3-thiadiazole, 1,3,4-thiadiazole, thiazolidine, 2,3-dihydro-thiazole, 1,3,4-oxadiazole, semicarbazone and substituted thiosemi-carbazones were synthesized. Also a series of 1-methylbenzimidazole carrying hydroxy ethyl-amide, substituted sulfonyl hydrazide and benzoyl hydrazide from aminobenzoyl group at position 2 of 1-methylbenzimidazole were synthesized. The antimicrobial evaluation of some of the new compounds was carried out.
