<P>The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) Tat protein transduction domain (PTD) is responsible for highly efficient protein transduction across plasma membranes. In a previous study, we showed that Tat-Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase (Tat-SOD) can be directly transduced into mammalian cells across the lipid membrane barrier. In this study, we fused the human SOD gene with a Tat PTD transduction vector at its N- and/or C-terminus. The fusion proteins (Tat-SOD, SOD-Tat, Tat-SOD-Tat) were purified from Escherichia coli and their ability to enter cells in vitro and in vivo compared by Western blotting and immunohistochemistry. The transduction efficiencies and biological activities of the SOD fusion protein with the Tat PTD at either terminus were equivalent and lower than the fusion protein with the Tat PTD at both termini. The availability of a more efficient SOD fusion protein provides a powerful vehicle for therapy in human diseases related to this anti-oxidant enzyme and to reactive oxygen species.</P>
Associations between Living Alone and Smoking and Alcohol Consumption in Korean Adults

Background: Recently, single-person households have increased in Korea and this trend may have potential public health implications and affect various health behaviors. This study investigated the associations between living alone and health behaviors such as smoking and alcohol consumption among Korean adults. Methods: We used data from the 6th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2013 and 2015 and a total of 17,088 adults were included. We performed a multivariable logistic regression analysis and calculated odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: Single-person households accounted for about 10% of the total participants. The proportions of currently smoking and heavy alcohol consumption were higher among individuals living alone than those living together among younger women and middle-aged and elderly men and women. In the multivariable logistic regression analysis, living alone was associated with increased odds of currently smoking compared to living together among middle-aged men and women (OR, 7.37; 95% CI, 2.33–23.32 in men and OR, 2.36; 95% CI, 1.04–5.36 in women) after adjusting for confounding variables. Conclusion: From this nationwide, population-based study, we found that living alone is associated with increased odds of currently smoking, especially in middle-aged people. Public health concerns may be warranted for middleaged single-person households to reduce health risks related to smoking.

Ceruloplasmin (CP) is the major plasma antioxidant and copper transport protein. Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against human CP were produced and characterized. A total of five hybridoma cell lines were established (CP2, CP10, CP20, CP25, CP30). From the epitope mapping analysis, two subgroups of mAbs recognize different peptide fragments were identified. When the purified CP was incubated with the mAbs, the ferroxidase activity of CP was inhibited up to a maximum 57%. Immunoblotting with various tissue homogenates indicated that all the mAbs specifically recognize a single protein band of 130 kDa. They also appear to be extensively cross-reactive among different mammalian including human and avian sources. These results demonstrated that only one type of immunologically similar CP is present in all of the mammalian tissues including human. The CP mAbs could be of great benefit to design the diagnostic kit for CP-related diseases such as Wilson's disease.
Electron Microscopy Investigation at the Initial Growth Stage of Carbon Nanotubes

The growth mechanism and the geometry of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are affected by several parameters such as formation process and catalytic materials. In order to understand the growth mechanism of CNT, it is essential to observe the CNTs at the initial growth stage. We synthesized CNTs directly on the Ni-deposited TEM Cu mesh grid using thermal CVD so as to preserve and investigate the original structure of CNTs from the initial to final growth state without any artifacts that might be introduced during TEM specimen preparation. The results obtained from the electron microscopy study show that the following growth modes of CNTs occur simultaneously at the initial stage: tip-growth, base-growth and intermediate-growth mode. The intermediate growth structure can be achieved by a mixture of base-growth mode and tip-growth mode, which occur sequentially. This is thought to be a probable mechanism for nanotube junctions. Comparison of Magnetic Reluctivity Models for FEA Considering Two-Dimensional Magnetic Properties

<P>An improved magnetic reluctivity model is developed to describe two-dimensional magnetic properties of anisotropic material. In this model, the behavior of magnetic field intensity is explained in terms of magnitude and direction of magnetic flux density, and reluctivity tensor always has zero off-diagonals. The proposed reluctivity model is incorporated into nonlinear finite element formulation using Newton-Raphson method, and applied to magnetic field analysis of a single-phase transformer core model. By comparing the analyzed <I>B</I> -waveforms with experimental ones, the effectiveness of the proposed reluctivity model and FE formulation is investigated.</P>
Analysis of Interrelationship between Optician Job and Current National Licensing Examination

목적: 안경사 직무를 분석하여 국가시험 교과목과의 연계성을 확인하고 대학의 시험과목 비율과 교육과정 개발에 기초자료를 제공한다. 방법 : 안경사 872명과 안경광학과 교수 99명을 대상으로 5개의 직무영역과 18개의 일로 구성된 설문을 조사하여 분석하였다. 결과 : 안경사 직무분석에서 작업의 중요도와 필요도가 모두 높은 영역에서 필요능력인 지식과 기술을 도출하여 안경조제가공(39.1%), 시력검사(27.5%) 및 콘택트렌즈(14.8%), 기타(18.6%)의 비중을 통해 안경사 1차 직무 분석(2000년)과 비교해 검안안경사 분야로 안경사의 직무가 이동된 것으로 나타났다. 결론: 안경사 직무에서의 변화는 안경사 국가시험과 대학의 교육과정에 적절히 반영되어야 할 것으로 생각된다. Purpose : The aim of the study is to analyze the job of an optician to find out the connectivity with the subjects of the national licensing examination, and to provide the basic data needed for the test subjects proportion and the development of college curriculum. Methods : A questionnaire consisting of 5 item duties areas and 18 item tasks was surveyed and analyzed for 872 opticians and 99 optician professors. Results : From the analysis of the opticians’ job, knowledge and skills, which are necessary skills, were derived in the areas where both the importance and necessity of work were high, such as eyeglass preparation processing (39.1%), eye examination (27.5%), contact lenses (14.8%), and others (18.6%), compared with the primary job analysis of opticians in 2000. It was found that the job of opticians was moved to the field of optometrists. Conclusion : Changes in the optician's job should be appropriately reflected in the national examination for opticians and the curriculum of universities.
