        A simple model for the f?d transition of actinide and heavy lanthanide ions in crystals

Solid State Chem. 171 (2003) 299], which assumes a stronger exchange Coulomb interaction between 4forbitals and 5dorbitals than the 4fspinorbit interaction, is extended to the case where the eect of thef(4ffor heavy lanthanide and 5ffor actinidef5dspectra of heavy lanthanide and actinide ions in crystals.

        A Study on Market Efficiency with the Indexes of SSEC and SZSEC of China

        This paper studies market efficiency from a weak form aspect using opening and closing prices of the Shanghai stock exchange composite index (SSEC) and Shenzhen stock exchange composite index (SZSEC) under the expected return theory. Classical methods (autocorrelation and runs test) are used to examine the features of stock returns, and little evidence against mutual independence of returns is found. We predict daily returns of SSEC and SZSEC with AR(p) and VAR(p) models (in this paper, p = 5 is taken as a one-week lag) and perform a virtual experiment on two indexes based on the predicted value of daily returns from AR(p) or VAR(p) model. From the results of AR(p) and VAR(p) for two indexes, we attempt to find out how the market efficiency level changes when the information from the other market is under consideration as we check the market efficiency level in one market. We find that SSEC in 2014–2016 and SZSEC in 2015–2016 are inefficient from the result of autocorrelation, that SSEC in 2016 and SZSEC in 2013 are not efficient from the result of runs test, that the stock market is efficient except 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2017 in SSEC and 2005, 2016 and 2017 in SZSEC and that SSEC is more influenced by SZSEC but SSEC influences SZSEC less from the result of the virtual experiment.

        Kinetic simulation of uranium migration in granite fissure media of beishan, gansu, China: A case study based on the Laplace transform and inverse transform methods

        Deep geological disposal is currently considered the most practical and feasible method for disposing high-level radioactive wastes (HLWs). One of its key scientific issues is the migration of nuclides in fissure media. However, studies on the migration of nuclides like U-238 are relatively limited. In this study, the granite rock masses in Beishan, Gansu were selected to construct a physical and mathematical model of U-238 migration using the Laplace transform and inverse transform methods. Based on the numerical methods, the kinetic migration of nuclide U-238 in the fissure media of granite was simulated, and the effects of parameters such as fissure width, hydraulic gradient, diffusible area ratio and rock porosity on the migration of U-238 were investigated. The following insights were obtained: (1) After 100,000 years, U-238 has a very limited diffusion depth in the matrix domain, with a diffusion range of only a few tens of millimeters, whereas it migrates relatively quickly in the fissure domain, with a maximum migration distance of about 1500 m. (2) Under the same migration time and distance, the relative concentration of nuclide U-238 in the fissure domain increases with larger gap width, hydraulic gradient, and diffusible area ratio, but decreases with higher rock porosity. (3) In the same time range, the rock masses with larger gap widths, hydraulic gradients, and diffusible area ratios have larger migration ranges, while those with higher porosities have smaller migration ranges. (4) While selecting a site for diposal of HLWs, it is recommended to choose rock masses in the granite area of Beishan with no fissures or few fissures; additionally, areas with smaller fissure widths, hydraulic gradients, and diffusible area ratios but higher rock porosity should be prioritized. This study can provide important theoretical support for understanding nuclide migration in the future geological disposal of HLWs.

        A transcriptional atlas of the silk gland in Antheraea pernyi revealed by IsoSeq

        Silk fibers spun by the silk gland of Antheraea pernyi have many unique properties and are of great value in genetic improvement and non-traditional applications. However, the complete transcriptional landscape and accurate genic annotation of the silk gland are yet to be conducted, which limits related studies on this organ. In this study, isoform sequencing revealed the full-length transcriptome of the A. pernyi silk gland, producing 12,572 high-confidence isoforms from 7,658 genes, among which more than 40 % of genes have not yet been annotated in the reference genome. Moreover, approximately 9 % of isoforms are computationally identified as long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs). Up to 1,492 alternative splicing (AS) and 3,068 alternative polyadenylation (APA) events were revealed within this transcriptome. In addition, 2,569 putative transcription factors (TFs) belonging to 68 different families were first identified in A. pernyi genome, including 871 TFs in silk gland, and some TF families have undergone expansion or contraction. This study significantly improve our knowledge of the genes expressed in the silk gland of A. pernyi and provide a valuable resource for the in-depth study of silk protein synthesis and spinning, genetic improvement, and non-traditional applications in A. pernyi.

        South Korea Memorializes the American Military Experience

        South Korea has become another nation in the global statue wars movement. This movement advocates the removal of statues honoring persons viewed as not deserving respect. In South Korea, activists have called for the removal of statues of Korean Japanese collaborators and that of General Douglas MacArthur. At the same time statues have gone up commemorating individuals and social actions for justice. Victims of injustice, to include those of an American military massacre, have been recognized. These transformative changes were made possible by democratization in the 1990s. The country’s previous authoritarian rule restricted the memorialization of the American military experience to a state-sanctioned narrative portraying America as savior. This article will demonstrate how memory sites and monuments from the authoritarian period reflected this narrative. They offered up a militaristic perspective of heroic battles and heroes, and expressed gratitude for humanitarian accomplishments. This is an accurate portrayal as the American military did demonstrate bravery, devotion to duty, and humanitarianism. However, the dark side to this remained hidden and its victims silenced. With the lifting of authoritarian control, preserved memory sites can now provide details to complete our understanding of the American military experience in South Korea.

      • Default probabilities of privately held firms

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We estimate the term structures of the default probabilities for private firms using data consisting of 1759 default events from 29,894 firms between 1999 and 2014. Each firm’s default likelihood is characterized by a forward intensity model employing macro risk factors and firm-specific attributes. As private firms do not have traded stock prices, we devise a methodology to obtain a public-firm equivalent distance-to-default by projection that references the distance-to-defaults of public firms with comparable attributes. The fitted model provides accurate multi-period forecasts of defaults, leading to both economically and statistically significant benefits over benchmark models.         Reasearch on the main factors for changes in pressure based on turbulent circulating fluidized bed coal gasification technology

        High temperature preheated air and steam as gasifying agent and coal gasification was performed in a pressurized turbulent circulating fluidized bed (CFB) gasification pilot plant to investigate the pressurized gasification process and estimate its potential. Within the scope of this paper this test facility as well as its operation behavior was described. Furthermore, the parameter pressure has been investigated regarding its influence on the syngas composition and was presented and discussed in the following. The results show that the gasification quality is improved at higher pressure because of the better fluidization in the reactor. Coal gasification at a higher pressure shows advantages in lower heat value and carbon conversion. With the gasifier pressure increased from 0.1MPa to 0.3MPa, the gas heating value is increased by 15%. Increasing the gasifier pressure would increase the carbon conversion from 57.52% to 76.76%. Also, the dry gas yield and efficiency of cold gas increase little with the increase of the gasifier pressure. The operating parameter of pressure exists at optimum operating range for this specific CFB coal gasification process.

        漢語“紅”與英語“red”的文化內涵比較研究 —基於詞典釋義的語義對比分析

        The color words "red" in English and "紅" in Chinese are frequently used in their respective languages. This paper gathers entries from authoritative dictionaries, namely "漢語大詞典" (Comprehensive Chinese Dictionary) and "現代英漢詞典" (Modern English-Chinese Dictionary), to delve into the cultural differences inherent in color terms. Utilizing qualitative, quantitative, and comparative analysis methods, this study compares the commendatory and derogatory ratios, semantic categories, and corresponding patterns of "紅" and "red" in their cultural semantics, drawing conclusions on their similarities and differences. These variances ultimately trace back to and reflect the distinct cultural values, aesthetics, and psychology between the two cultures. In teaching and academic research, the instruction, study, and translation of culture-laden terms have become an imperative issue in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. This is because the color terms in both English and Chinese languages encompass rich cultural significances. Teaching these terms aids students in grasping the conceptual and particularly the cultural meanings they represent, eradicating interference from students' native languages and cultures, and bolstering intercultural communication awareness and capabilities. This bears practical significance for lexicology and intercultural communication.

      • The Degree Elevation of UE-spline Curves

        Unified and extended splines(UE-splines), which can unify and extend polynomial, trigonom etric and hyperbolic B-splines, inherit most properties of B-splines and have advantages over B -splines for modeling. This paper mainly studies the degree elevation of UE-splines. First, we construct a new class of basis functions, called bi-order UE-spline basis. The bi-order UE-splines are defined by the integral definition of splines. Then some important properties of bi-order UEsplines are given especially for the transformation formulas of the basis functions before and after inserting a interior knot into the knot vector. We finally proved that the degree elevation of UE-spline curves can be interpreted to be corner cutting on the control polygons.
