A Stabilizing Agent, PCA/DTPA, Improves Plasma Storage Life for the Chromsystems Vitamin C Assay up to Six Months

        Collie Jake TB,Hudson Elizabeth P,Deane Adam M,Bellomo Rinaldo,Greaves Ronda F 대한진단검사의학회 2021 Annals of Laboratory Medicine Vol.41 No.4

The commonly used Chromsystems vitamin C (ascorbate) assay (Munich, Germany) has a sample storage life of five days at –20°C. Stabilizing agents have been successfully used to increase longevity; however, their suitability with this commercial assay is unclear. We investigated the compatibility of a stabilizing agent, perchloric acid/diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (PCA/DTPA), with the Chromsystems assay. Plasma was stored at –80°C, with or without PCA/DTPA. Storage up to six months was assessed through baseline and repeat analyses, stability was assessed by comparing paired non-stabilized and PCA/DTPA-stabilized plasma, and performance was assessed using allowable performance specifications of an external quality assurance program. Ascorbate concentration was significantly lower in non-stabilized plasma than in paired PCA/DTPA-stabilized plasma, with a proportional difference of 11% (P=0.01). All storage analysis results were within the allowable performance specifications. Storage at –80°C prevented plasma ascorbate oxidation; however, substantial oxidation occurred during sample processing. In conclusion, PCA/DTPA significantly reduces ascorbate oxidation, and PCA/DTPA-stabilized ascorbate plasma is compatible with the Chromsystems assay and stable for up to six months, when stored at –80°C.

Strategic Trade Policy under Integrateed Markets

Collie, David R.,Hviid, Morten,Kendall, Toby 세종대학교 국제경제연구소 1999 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.14 No.4

A model of strategic trade policy under integrated markets is presented and optimal trade policies are derived under assumptions of both complete and incomplete information. With the assumption of complete information it is shown that the optimal policy is an import tariff (export subsidy) when a country is a net importer (exporter). In the Nash equilibrium in trade policies the low cost country gives an export subsidy which is fully incomplete information about costs adds an incentive for both governments to use their trade policy as a signal of their firm's costs. This signaling effect increases the export subsidy and decreases the import tariff. In the simultaneous signaling game, with symmetry, the expected welfare in the separating equilibrium is higher than under free trade for both countries. (JEL Classifications: F12, F13, L13)

Immiserizing Growth and the Metzler Paradox in the Ricardian Model

David Collie 한국국제경제학회 2012 International Economic Journal Vol.26 No.1

Conditions for the occurrence of immiserizing growth and the Metzler paradox are analysed in the Ricardian model when consumers in the foreign country have Leontief preferences while consumers in the home country have Cobb-Douglas preferences. By using specific functional forms, the conditions for the occurrence of the two paradoxes are defined in terms of the exogenous parameters of the model rather than endogenous variables such as the foreign import demand elasticity in the conditions of Bhagwati (1958)1. Bhagwati , J. N. 1958 . Immiserizing growth: a geometrical note . Review of Economic Studies , 25 : 201 – 205 . [CrossRef], [Web of Science ®]View all references and Metzler (1949a8. Metzler , L. A. 1949a . Tariffs, the terms of trade and the distribution of national income . Journal of Political Economy , 57 : 1 – 29 . [CrossRef], [Web of Science ®]View all references, b9. Metzler , L. A. 1949b . Tariffs, international demand, and domestic prices . Journal of Political Economy , 57 : 345 – 351 . [CrossRef], [Web of Science ®]View all references). It is shown that the simultaneous occurrence of both paradoxical results is possible for some parameter values.

Strategic Trade Policy under Integrated Markets

( David R. Collie ),( Morten Hviid ),( Toby Kendall ) 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 (구 세종대학교 국제경제연구소) 1999 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.14 No.4

A model of strategic trade policy under integrated markets is presented and optimal trade policies are derived under assumptions of both complete and incomplete information. With the assumption of complete information it is shown that the optimal policy is an import tariff (export subsidy) when a country is a net importer (exporter). In the Nash equilibrium in trade policies the low cost country gives an export subsidy which is fully countervailed by the import tariff of the other country. The introduction of incomplete information about costs adds an incentive for both governments to use their trade policy as a signal of their firm`s costs. This signalling effect increases the export subsidy and decreases the import tariff. In the simultaneous signalling game, with symmetry, the expected welfare in the separating equilibrium is higher than under free trade for both countries. (JEL Classifications: F12, F13, L13)

Evaluation of the Efficacy of Flaxseed Meal and Flaxseed Extract in Reducing Menopausal Symptoms

Márcia Constantino Colli,Adelar Bracht,Andréa Assunção Soares,Andréa Luisa de Oliveira,Cinthia Gandolfi Bôer,Cristina Giatti Marques de Souza,Rosane Marina Peralta 한국식품영양과학회 2012 Journal of medicinal food Vol.15 No.9

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of flaxseed meal and flaxseed extract in reducing climacteric symptoms of menopausal women. Ninety menopausal women were randomly distributed into three study groups: group I received 1 g per day of flaxseed extract containing at least 100 mg of secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG), group II received 90 g per day of flaxseed meal containing at least 270 mg of SDG, and group III received 1 g per day of collagen (placebo group). Subjects were assessed for menopausal symptoms by the Kupperman index at the beginning and at the end of the 6 months of treatment. Subjects were also assessed for endometrial thickness and vaginal cytology. The Kupperman index values at the beginning and end of the treatments were analyzed using the paired t-test. Both the flaxseed extract (P=.007) and the flaxseed meal (P=.005) were effective in reducing the menopausal symptoms when compared with the placebo control (P=.082). Alternatively, the changes in Kupperman index were also computed and submitted to analysis of variance. In this case, no significant differences were found (P=.084) although the data indicate a decreasing tendency for the Kupperman index by both the flaxseed extract and the flaxseed meal groups. Neither the flaxseed extract nor the flaxseed meal exerted clinically important estrogenic effects on the vaginal epithelium or endometrium as revealed by the absence of changes in the blood levels of follicle stimulating hormone and estradiol, as well as in the endometrial thickness, and vaginal epithelial maturation value. No serious adverse events related to the treatments were reported. Although the results of the present study do not allow an unequivocal conclusion about the action of flaxseed on the menopausal symptoms, they suggest that it could be premature to conclude that no such action exists. Clearly the matter still deserves further experimental attention.

Dimensional Stability of Single Jersey Fabrics of $LincLITE^{\circledR}$ and Conventional Yarns. II. Fabric Dimensional Changes

        Park, Shin-Woong,Collie, Stewart,Herath, C.N.,Kang, Bok-Choon,An, Jae-Sang The Korean Fiber Society 2007 Fibers and polymers Vol.8 No.1

Dimensional changes of single jersey fabrics made from $LincLITE^{(R)}$ and conventional yarns(39 tex and 48 tex) with different twist factors and fabric tightness factors are investigated under dry-, steam- and full- relaxation treatments. Results showed that linear and area shrinkages, fabric density and stitch density values were affected by tightness factors, relaxation treatment, yarn twist and feeder blending. Generally, higher length shrinkages and width increases were reported with $LincLITE^{(R)}$ and conventional fabrics. Tightness factors and twist factors significantly affected $LincLITE^{(R)}$ and insignificantly affected conventional fabrics in concern of change of shape and area shrinkages. Thus, fabric density values and reciprocal of stitch lengths showed linear correlations with intercepts, which decreased on full relaxation. Also, it showed higher regression correlation coefficient factors from $LincLITE^{(R)}$ and conventional fabrics.

Dimensional Stability of Single Jersey Fabrics of $LincLITE^{(R)}$ and Conventional Yarns. I.

        Park, Shin-Woong,Collie, Stewart,Herath, C.N.,Kang, Bok-Choon The Korean Fiber Society 2006 Fibers and polymers Vol.7 No.4

Dimensional constants (k values) of single jersey fabrics made from $LincLITE^{(R)}$ and conventional yams are calculated under dry, steam, full relaxation treatments. Fabrics were made under different tightness factors such as high, medium and low with different twist factors, twist directions and feeder blending. $LincLITE^{(R)}$ yarns made to get soft and bulkier effects with yam count of 39 tex and conventional yams made into 39 tex and 48 tex yam counts. Various effects on K values are analysed using correlation coefficients. K-values are increased with relaxation progression and have shown some differences between in $LincLITE^{(R)}$ and conventional fabrics, and feeder blended fabrics. Loop shape factor is highly affected by tightness factor, relaxation and feeder blending in $LincLITE^{(R)}$ fabrics, whereas twist factor not significantly effects on loop shape factor in conventional fabrics. Stitch density significantly increases with relaxation in conventional fabrics and no significant effect shows with $LincLITE^{(R)}$ fabrics.
