In this work, particle effect on the breakdown in pressurized SF6 was systematically investigated using Cu particle fixed on the parallel electrode monitoring system. For this experiments, various size particles were prepared and D.C Voltage and Lightning Impulse voltage were applied to the system as a function of gas pressure from 1 atm to 5 atm. At D.C test, it was revealed that particle length could affect the breakdown voltage seriously and corona stabilization effect could influence the breakdown voltage at some critical pressure and streamer corona was main discharge mechanism on the breakdown in SF6. At L.I test, breakdown voltages were affected depending on the the polarity of applying impulse voltage. It was noticed that the negative polarity could reduce the insulation strength much greater than the positive polarity and breakdown voltage could not be raised by increasing gas pressure above the critical value.

Purpose

We previously reported the prevalence of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) to be 3.3% among an elderly Korean urban cohort recruited during 2005-2006. Here, we report a 5-year follow-up study of the previously identified MGUS cohort.

Materials and Methods

The 680 participants from the initial cohort were followed-up for a median of 5 years. Sera were collected between 2010 and 2011. Two-step screening was performed with standard serum electrophoresis followed by immunofixation and determination of the serum concentration of monoclonal-protein (M-protein).

Results

Of the 680 participants (21 with MGUS), 348 (51%) agreed to participate in the follow-up study and 10 were found to have MGUS. Among the 21 MGUS patients initially identified, nine were followed-up, six had persistent M-protein, and one patient had progressed to multiple myeloma (progression rate, 1.0%/yr). The M-protein disappeared in the remaining two individuals. Among the 339 participants without MGUS who were followed-up, four developed an M-protein. There was no significant difference in survival with respect to the presence of MGUS (p=0.66).

Conclusion

The 5-year follow-up data show that the natural clinical course of MGUS in Korea is similar to that in Western countries. MGUS was not associated with an increased risk of death over the 5-year study period.

Cyclic behavior of connection between footing and concrete-infilled composite PHC pile
Bang, Jin-Wook,Hyun, Jung Hwan,Lee, Bang Yeon,Kim, Yun Yong Techno-Press 2014 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.50 No.6
The conventional PHC pile-footing connection is the weak part because the surface area and stiffness are sharply changed. The Composite PHC pile reinforced with the transverse shear reinforcing bars and infilled-concrete, hereafter ICP pile, has been developed for improving the flexural and shear performance. This paper investigates the cyclic behavior and performance of the ICP pile-footing connection. To investigate the behavior of the connection, one PHC and two ICP specimens were manufactured and then a series of cyclic loading tests were performed. From the test results, it was found that the ICP pile-footing connection exhibited higher cyclic behavior and connection performance compared to the conventional PHC pile-footing connection in terms of ductility ratio, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation capacity.

In this work, the influence of wire type conducting particles on the insulation reliability of GIS has been systematically investigated when he epoxy resin based dielectric coating was made on the inner side of outer electrode. For this purpose, coaxial cylinder-type electrode was adopted in 362 ㎸ chamber and various sizes of Cu conducting particle were used under different gas pressures. In order to elucidate the coating effect on the gas insulation. different thickness of dielectric coating has been considered and then the lift-off voltage and flashover voltages have been measured. The results show that the dielectric coating has a remarkable influence by restraining the movement of article in GIS system, and thus GIS insulation reliability is noticeably improved.

This study was planned to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of anemia and its impact on health-related quality of life and activities of daily living (ADL) in elderly Koreans. Of the 1,118 randomly sampled elderly Koreans aged 65?years or older living in Seongnam, Korea, on Aug. 1, 2005, we estimated the prevalence of anemia from 695 responders. We investigated the risk factors of anemia using a merged sample of this random sample and 270 volunteers enrolled from Seongnam residents aged 85?years or older. We diagnosed anemia according to the World Health Organization criteria. The estimated age- and gender-standardized prevalence of anemia was 8.33?% for the overall random sample (95?% confidence intervals (CI) 6.28-10.39), 10.58?% in men (95?% CI 7.09-14.07), and 6.85?% in women (95?% CI 4.37-9.34). The identified risk factors were age 80?years, male, iron deficiency, history of stroke, renal dysfunction, and metabolic syndrome. Anemia was associated with impairment in physical functioning (p?=?0.031) and instrumental ADL (p?<?0.001). This is the first report about anemia's prevalence in community-dwelling Korean elders, adjusted and standardized according to the city's and nation's population. Timely diagnosis of anemia and correction of its treatable cause may improve QOL and ADL in elderly individuals.

With the rapid development of world economics, demand for electricity in metropolitan areas has increased dramatically. The high-temperature superconductivity (HTS) cable is one of the most promising technologies for solving the bottleneck of the transmission system. However, power system planners have not yet considered the HTS cable as a mature technology due to its weak insulation characteristics with respect to those of conventional power cables. The electrical insulation design is one of the major issues for HTS cable. It is evident that the insulation in the dc cable should be investigated further at this time. For the insulation design of the HTS cable, it is necessary to investigate the breakdown (BD) characteristics and the partial discharge (PD) inception voltage of the liquid nitrogen (LN2)/polypropylene laminated paper (PPLP) composite insulation system. In this paper, BD voltage and PD inception voltage of PPLP immersed in LN2 was compared under ac and dc stresses. Various kinds of PPLP specimens considering the different layers and the butt gaps were prepared. The PD inception voltage was measured in a shield room according to IEC 60270. Consequently, it was investigated that characteristics of the PD inception voltage and the BD voltage was rather different when ac and dc voltages were respectively applied in LN2, and these results could be used for the insulation design of ac and dc HTS cables.
