Shu-gyo-ryoku, a program to enhance students’ academic and career skills, was begun in the academic year 2011. Under the new program, “Career Planning” and “Career Design” were introduced as part of the liberal arts education for incoming freshmen. Approximately 500 students majoring in engineering enrolled in “Career Planning”, in which they study a “curriculum map” and how it relates to their future fields of employment. The curriculum map illustrates the connections between classes and increases students’understanding of the curriculum structure. In small groups, students discussed the curriculum in order to develop sketches of their career paths. In addition, students answered a career anchor test and though several communicative activities, improved their communication skills. A portfolio system was built into the university network to record the learning history of each student. Students are able to check their learning histories and reflect on the change in themselves during their academic careers.
South-Coast Cyclone in Japan During El Niño-Caused Warm Winters

La Niña conditions during boreal winter sometimes brings excessive snowfall in Japan, especially on the East Sea/Sea of Japan coastal and mountain areas through intensified northwesterly cold winds caused by La-Niña related atmospheric teleconnection. Meanwhile, snowfall events also increase in the Pacific coast area of Japan during the El Niño state due to extratropical cyclones passing along the south coast of Japan (hereafter referred to as South-coast cyclone). In the present study, we investigated year-to-year snowfall/ rainfall variations based on meteorological station data and cyclone tracks identified by using the Japanese 55-year Reanalysis. The result clearly indicates increase of the South-coast cyclone during El Niño-developing winters, which is consistent with excessive snowfall in the northern part of the Pacific coast. Strong subtropical jet hampers cyclogenesis due to less vertical interaction through the trapping of upper-level eddies. During El Niño-developing winters, the subtropical jet is weakened over East Asia, indicating dynamic linkage to increased cyclone frequency. In addition to this, both the deepening of the upper-tropospheric trough over East Asia and anomalous low-tropospheric northwest anticyclones extending from the Philippines toward Japan are also consistent with the enhancement of cyclogenesis over the East China Sea as well as warm winter in Japan.

<P>This report describes a helicity-selective photoreaction of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with disulfide in the presence of oxygen. The SWNTs were characterized using absorption, photoluminescence (PL), Raman, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and current–voltage (<I>I</I>–<I>V</I>) measurements. Results showed remarkable helicity-selective (metallic SWNTs/semiconducting SWNTs and diameter) functionalization of SWNTs. The reaction rate decreases in the order of metallic SWNTs > semiconducting SWNTs and small-diameter SWNTs > large-diameter SWNTs. Control experiments conducted under various experimental conditions and ESR and femtosecond laser flash photolysis measurements revealed that the helicity-selective reaction proceeds via a photoinduced electron transfer reaction.
