Influence of Soil Salinity on the Interaction between Tomato and Broomrape plant (Orobanche cernua)

        Al-Khateeb, W.M.,Hameed, K.M.,Shibli, R.A. The Korean Society of Plant Pathology 2005 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.21 No.4

Tomato seedlings (20- days old) were transplanted to infested soil with Orobanche cernua and non-infested soils. All plants were maintained under 0, 25, 50 and 75 mM NaCl soil salinity levels throughout their growing period under greenhouse conditions. Plants grown in O. cernua infested soil infIltrated with 0, 25, and 50 mM NaCl solution for salinity showed significant reduction in their growth as well as their total soluble carbohydrate and protein contents in compared with those grown in non-infested soil. However, under 75 mM NaCI salinity level all plants showed similar growth values whether they were grown in O. cernua infested or non-infested soil. Starting at the fifth and through out the eighth week after transplantation there was a significant increase in plant height in the 0, 25 and 50 mM NaCl irrigated plants over other treatments. Irrigation with 50 mM NaCl significantly reduced the emergence of O. cernua (2/plant) and the number of attachments (4.4 attachments) on roots of tomato. Furthermore, irrigation with 75 mM NaCl resulted in complete elimination of O. cernua emergence.

Effect of Salinity on Orobanche cernua Seed Germination

        Al-Khateeb, W.M.,Hameed, K.M.,Shibli, R.A. The Korean Society of Plant Pathology 2003 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.19 No.3

Seeds of broomrape (Orobanche cernua) were exposed to 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 mM NaCl solutions during their preconditioning period (14 days of moisture) under laboratory conditions and induced to germinate by synthetic germination stimulant (GR24). There was significant reduction in seed germination with increased salt concentration as shown in 35.2, 32.5, 23.6, 14.3, and 9.2% germination, respectively. Exposure of Orobanche cernua seeds to 0.0, 1.0, 1.25, and 1.5 M levels of NaCl for 9 hours resulted in 29.4, 21.3, 20.5, and 17.4% germination, respectively. Water preconditioned seeds showed Heavier protein profile bands of 6.5-14.2 KDa than those of dry seeds. Seeds treated with 0.75 M NaCl showed profile similar with that of water preconditioned ones, plus an extra band at 29-36 KDa. The protein profiles of 1.0 and 1.5 M NaCl treated seeds showed weaker bands with the absence of 29-36 KDa band.

In vitro Propagation, Genetic Stability, and Secondary Metabolite Analysis of Wild Lavender (Lavandula coronopifolia Poir.)

        Wesam Al Khateeb,Razan Kanaan,Tamam El-Elimat,Muhammad Alu’datt,Jamil Lahham,Ahmad El-Oqlah 한국원예학회 2017 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.58 No.4

Lavenders (Lavandula species) are important aromatic ornamental medicinal plants with wide rangingapplications in perfume and pharmaceutical industries. We developed an in vitro propagation protocol for Lavandulacoronopifolia. Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 0.5 mg・L-1N6-benzyladenine was the bestmedium for the proliferation of microshoots, while the highest rooting frequency was obtained using MS mediumsupplemented with 1.0 mg・L-1indole-3-butyric acid. Inter-simple sequence repeat analysis revealed that the invitro-propagated microshoots were highly genetically stable, even after subculture. The highest callus fresh weight(667.9 mg) was obtained by propagating on medium supplemented with a combination of 1.0 mg・L-1naphthaleneaceticacid and 0.5 mg・L-1butyric acid. Using the Folin-Ciocalteu method, methanolic extracts of wild L. coronopifoliarevealed total phenolic content of 4.9 mg expressed in gallic acid equivalents (GAE) (mg GAE・g-1dry matter). Radicalscavenging activity was estimated at 85% using the free radical 2,2-diphyenyl-picrylhydrazyl assay. Using the brineshrimp assay for cytotoxicity, the methanolic extract was found to be nontoxic. Finally, liquid chromatography tandemmass spectrometry with standard reference compounds was used to quantify the key phenolic compounds in both invitro and in vivo-grown L. coronopifolia. Six major phenolic compounds were identified: caffeic acid, rosmarinic acid, rutin, quercetin, luteolin, and hesperidin. Levels of these phenolic compounds were highest in wild plant extracts.

Investigation of the Effect of Rubber on Rheological Properties of Asphalt Binders using Superpave DSR

        Ghazi G. Al-Khateeb,Khaled Z. Ramadan 대한토목학회 2015 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.19 No.1

The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of the rubber additive on the rheological properties of asphalt bindersincluding Superpave rutting parameter, fatigue parameter, storage modulus at six rubber percentages: 0.0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.25, 10, and 15%. The Superpave Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) was used to measure the complex shear modules value and the phase angle for thefresh asphalt binder and the rubber-modified asphalt binders using DSR strain-controlled tests. The DSR tests were conducted at oneloading frequency of 10 rad/sec (1.59 Hz) and five temperatures: 58, 64, 70, 76, and 82°C. A 12 percent constant strain was appliedin these tests according to the Superpave specifications. The rubber additive improved the complex shear modulus value of asphaltbinder at all temperatures. Findings of the study showed that the rubber additive resulted in an increase in each of: the complex shearmodulus value, the rutting parameter, the fatigue parameter, and the storage modulus (|G*|, |G*|/sin δ, |G*|sin d, and |G*|cos δ,respectively) of the asphalt binder. In conclusion, the rubber additive improved the rutting resistance as well as the fatigue resistanceof the asphalt binder by increasing the complex shear modulus value and the storage modulus, and decreasing the phase angle.

Adsorption behavior of estrogenic compounds on carbon nanotubes from aqueous solutions: Kinetic and thermodynamic studies

        Lateefa A. Al-Khateeb,Mohamad Abdel Salam,Abdualah Y. Obaid,Najwa A. Asiri 한국공업화학회 2014 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.20 No.3

In this study different estrogenic compounds, estrone (E1), 17b-estradiol (E2), and 17a-ethinylestradiol(EE2), were removed from the model and real solution by the newly emerged multi-walled carbonnanotubes. The effects of different factors which affect the removal process were studied and optimizedfor efficient removal. The kinetics of E1, E2, and EE2 adsorption on MWCNTs were analyzed usingdifferent kinetic models and the results showed that the removal was mainly a pseudo-second-orderprocess. The thermodynamic study showed the spontaneity and exothermic nature of the removalprocess, with negative entropy.

      • Explaining the Saving-Investment Relationship with Threshold Effects

        Ali F. Darrat,Khaled Elkhal,Faisal B. Al-Khateeb 사람과세계경영학회 2010 Global Business and Finance Review Vol.15 No.1

There have been many attempts to explain the unreasonably high correlation between domestic saving and investment rates. The threshold testing procedure developed by Hansen (1999) provides a framework for testing the effects of key variables relating to capital mobility in conjunction with the saving- investment relationship. Ho (2003) first applied this method to the saving-investment puzzle controlling for thresholds in country size. Extending this model, this paper reports a number of significant thresholds effects for country- size, trade and financial openness measures, age dependency ratios and trade balances. After controlling for threshold effects the relationship between savings and investment is found to be statistically insignificant. Additionally, controlling for the thresholds effects in a dynamic model of the current account allows for direct comparison between the savings-investment coefficient and adjustments to a country’ s external balance.

Numerical solution of complex fuzzy heat equation in term of complex Dirichlet conditions

        Hamzeh Zureigat,Abd Ulazeez Alkouri,Areen Al-khateeb,Eman Abuteen,Sana Abu-Ghurra 한국지능시스템학회 2023 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL of FUZZY LOGIC and INTELLIGE Vol.23 No.1

Recently, complex fuzzy sets have become powerful tools for generalizing the range of fuzzy sets to wider ranges that lies on a unit disk in the complex plane. In this study, complex fuzzy numbers are discussed and applied for the first time to solve a complex fuzzy partial differential equation involving a complex fuzzy heat equation under Hukuhara differentiability. Subsequently, an explicit finite difference scheme, referred to as the forward time-center space, was implemented to solve the complex fuzzy heat equations. The imprecision of the issue is evident in the initial and boundary conditions, as well as in the amplitude and phase terms' coefficients, where the convex normalized triangular fuzzy numbers are extended to the unit disk in the complex plane. The proposed numerical methods utilized the properties and benefits of the complex fuzzy set theory. Furthermore, a new proof of consistency, stability, and convergence was established under this theory. A numerical example was provided to illustrate the reliability and feasibility of the proposed approach. The results obtained using the proposed approach are in adequate agreement with the exact solution and related theoretical aspects.
