        Survey on Geochemical Characteristics of Groundwater Around Carcass Burial Area and Agricultural Area with Livestock Facilities

        In this study, chemical characteristics of groundwater around carcass burial areas and those in agricultural and livestock-farming complex areas in South Korea were monitored. Groundwater samples were collected from 166 wells around carcass burial sites and 466 wells around the agricultural areas where carcass burial sites are absent. The chemical parameters (pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, oxidation reduction potential, $NO_3$-N, $NH_4$-N, and $Cl^-$) in carcass burial areas and agricultural areas were similar. The $NO_3$-N concentrations exhibited minimal seasonal fluctuations below $30mg\;L^{-1}$ in most of the wells, even in the wells located close to the carcass burial sites; and $Cl^-$ concentrations also showed similar patterns. The chemical characteristics of groundwater monitored in this study indicated that groundwater was widely contaminated by agricultural activities and livestock farming, but probably not by leachates derived from nearby carcass burial sites.

        Is HAZOP a Reliable Tool? What Improvements are Possible?

        Despite many measures, still from time to time catastrophic events occur, even after reviewing potential scenarios with HAZID tools. Therefore, it is evident that in order to prevent such events, answering the question: "What can go wrong?" requires more enhanced HAZID tools. Recently, new system based approaches have been proposed, such as STPA (system-theoretic process analysis) and Blended Hazid, but for the time being for several reasons their availability for general use is very limited. However, by making use of available advanced software and technology, traditional HAZID tools can still be improved in degree of completeness of identifying possible hazards and in work time efficiency. The new HAZID methodology proposed here, the Data-based semi-Automatic HAZard IDentification (DAHAZID), seeks to identify possible scenarios with a semi-automated system approach. Based on the two traditional HAZID tools, Hazard Operability (HAZOP) Study and Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), the new method will minimize the limitations of each method. This will occur by means of a thorough systematic preparation before the tools are applied. Rather than depending on reading drawings to obtain connectivity information of process system equipment elements, this research is generating and presenting in prepopulated work sheets linked components together with all required information and space to note HAZID results. Next, this method can be integrated with proper guidelines regarding process safer design and hazard analysis. To examine its usefulness, the method will be applied to a case study.

        최근의 급속한 인터넷 기술의 발전으로 ‘e-비즈니스 패러다임’이라는 신 기업 문화가 도입되었으며, 기업의 핵심적인 업무 프로세스들이 인터넷을 기반으로 변화되고 있다. 특히, 기업 내의 사원 사이뿐만 아니라 기업과 고객, 협력업체 사이의 쌍방향의 커뮤니케이션 기술이 비즈니스에서의 새로운 가치로 인식되고 있다. 이에 따라, 그룹웨어나 프로젝트 관리 툴과 같이 기업의 대내외적인 커뮤니케이션 채널을 통합시키는 도구들이 개발되었다. 그러나, 대부분의 상용 커뮤니케이션 툴은 대기업의 범용적인 업무 프로세스에 초점을 두고 있으므로, 중소 e-디자인 회사와 같이 소규모의 특화된 업무 프로세스를 가지는 기업에는 적용이 용이하지 않다. 본 논문에서는 중소 e-디자인 기업의 업무 프로세스를 분석하여 커뮤니케이션을 개선시키기 위한 요구 조건들을 도출하고, 이들 요구 조건들을 체계적으로 반영하여 개발한 커뮤니케이션 관리 플랫폼 을 제안한다. 제안된 플랫폼은 상대적으로 정보 시스템의 도입이 취약한 중소 e-디자인 회사의 커뮤니케이션 환경을 개선하고 프로젝트를 체계적으로 진행하는데 기여할 수 있다. Internet technologies, emerging recently, introduce a new way of businesses named e-business and transform essential business processes. Especially, mutual communications among employees, customers, and partners are being recognized as a key value in business. As a result, communication tools such as groupware and project management software have been developed to integrate internal and external communication channels. However, most commercial communication tools are not proper for small enterprises in a specific area such as small e-design companies, because they are focused on general functionalities, required by most large enterprises. In this paper, we analyze the requirements for improving communication environments of small e-design companies, and proposes an advanced communication management tool which reflects those requirements. The communication platform proposed improves the communication environment of those small e-design companies that are desperately in need of an efficient way to carry out projects, and will help in the process of successful projects.

        Adsorption and Incorporation of Arsenic to Biogenic Lepidocrocite Formed in the Presence of Ferrous Iron during Denitrification by <i>Paracoccus denitrificans</i>

        <P>We demonstrate adsorption and partial incorporation of arsenic, in its soluble form, either as arsenite or arsenate into lepidocrocite (γ-FeOOH), which was formed through nitrite-driven Fe(II) oxidation by <I>Paracoccus denitrificans</I> under nitrate-reducing conditions. Fe and As K-edge XANES and radial distribution functions of Fourier-transformed EXAFS spectra showed that portions of As were found to be incorporated in the biogenic lepidocrocite, in addition to higher portions of adsorbed As. We suggest that denitrifying bacteria such as <I>Paracoccus denitrificans</I>, studied here, could facilitate decrease of aqueous arsenic As(III) and/or As(V) through indirect Fe(II) oxidation to solid phase iron minerals, here as lepidocrocite, by the denitrification product nitrite in the presence of nitrate, ferrous iron, and arsenic, under certain environmental conditions where these materials could be found, such as in As-contaminated paddy soils and wetlands.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

        Draft Genome Sequence of Pseudomonas sp. Strain G5, Isolated from a Traditional Indigo Fermentation Dye Vat

        In previous study, alkaliphilic and thermotolerant bacterium strain, Pseudomonas sp. strain G5, capable of reducing insoluble indigo was isolated from Korean traditional fermentation liquor. Here, we report the draft genome sequence and annotation of strain G5 to provide the genomic information involved in indigo reduction process.

        Recollection of Memory and Stupidity of Love in Julian Barnes’s The Sense of an Ending

        This paper examines the narrator’s functions of memory, love and self-realization in Julian Barnes’s 2011 Man Booker Prize winning novel, The Sense of an Ending. Using Frank Kermode’s identical title, Barnes adapts the concept of peripeteia to show how the narrator, Tony Webster, distorts and misremembers his own past. Tony faces his peripeteia in relation to a love triangle with his ex-girlfriend, Veronica, and his schoolmate, Adrian. Beginning with the recollection of his memory caused by the contents of a will from Veronica’s mother, Tony goes back to his university days after forty years. Tony confesses he forgot what he had written to Adrian who politely had asked for permission to meet Veronica; and later it turns out that with jealously and rage Tony sent Adrian a postcard of the Clifton Suspension Bridge where surprisingly people jump to death, and moreover a letter with curses to Adrian and Veronica including their next generation. After six months, when he heard about Adrian’s shocking suicide, he simply accepted the reason of Adrian’s death in his own way and went on to live his life. Without recognizing the aftermath of his past acts, Tony comes to know after forty years that Adrian has a mentally challenged son whose mother is not Veronica but Veronica’s mother, Sarah. What matters to him in the case is that Tony loved Veronica and his blind love caused his stupid behavior. By illustrating Tony’s fallibility of memory and past acts, this paper stresses Tony’s self-realization in stupidity Avital Ronell argues; namely, Tony’s stupidity is a part of his nature but is not perceived. In this vein, the peripeteia entangled with his love in The Sense of an Ending is a literary device for Tony to recollect and reconstruct his past, present and, even probably, future by relating himself with others.
