Vol.0 No.68
Yukio Mishima’s The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea is a novel published in September 1963. It was a time when mass consumer society was settling along with high economic growth. In Mishima’s personal life, his eldest son Iichiro Hiraoka was born on May 2, 1962 following his marriage in 1958, and he underwent a major change in his life. This study is an analysis of the father’s image as represented in the novel and the father’s image in Japanese society and culture in the 1960s, the time when the novel was published. This paper confirms that the ‘father’ is depicted in very negative terms in the novel, and this negative image coincides with the notion of a helpless ‘father’, which began to emerge in Japanese culture from the late 1950s to the 1960s. The negative image of the father in postwar Japan derives from the comparison with the image of the patriarchal father figure of the prewar period. In Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea, the execution of Ryuji by a group of boys is an act of execution of a helpless father who has begun to appear after the war, which can also be interpreted as an expression of the desire for the return of a strong father.
