People in metropolitan cities can be exposed to particulate air pollutants at public transportation systems such as bus stops. In this study, we sampled aerosol particles with an impactor at a bus stop. We analyzed the shapes of these particles with an optical microscope. It was estimated that fibers, silicons, byproducts of combustion, and pollens existed in the air environments at the bus stop with analysis of shapes of sampled particles.

Airborne nanoparticles (NPs) are a major threat to public health. With the development of various air-cleaning technologies, particle generation methods for evaluating the relevant technology are also required to be investigated. Here, we present a simple, low-cost method for generating combustion NPs using laser ablation. The methods can selectively control the size and number concentration of combustion NPs by simply controlling the laser irradiation time and power. In addition, NPs can be generated using various target materials such as wood and leather. Our proposed NPs generation method has the potential to be used as a standard method and is expected to use for the evaluation of commercialized air-cleaning devices.

We conducted experiments on mask filters. We measured filtering efficiencies of several new mask filters which were manufactured by disassembling and reassembling of one type of mask filter. New filter (A+C: combination of the first layer and the third layer of the tested mask filter) showed the highest efficiency (97.7%) with the respiratory resistance of 98 pa.

An electrospray patterning method has been considered as a new and effective way for controlling very fine droplets. Drop-on-demand patterning for unstained nutrient broth on wafers was newly conducted with an electrospray pulsed jet. The patterns had been made under varying experimental conditions including flow rate, vibration frequency, and translational speed of the electrospray patterning system. In this experiment, especially, variation of nutrient broth droplet was measured under varying flow rate conditions. This new technique has a potential to be applied in biology experiments and hormone medical industry.
가시광활성 유기염료의 광 내구성 및 항바이오 성능 비교 연구

Amid the global pandemic, the threat of bioaerosols has become a major concern. Bioaerosol control technology using photocatalysts is actively developing, and in particular, the visible-light-activated (VLA) photosensitizer dyes are attracting attention. Herein, the VLA antimicrobial performance and light durability of various photosensitizer dyes, such as crystal violet (CV) and toluidine blue O (TBO), were evaluated. The antimicrobial performances were quantitatively determined according to the concentration of dye, light intensity, and exposure time. In addition, the light durability was evaluated by tracking changes in the physicochemical properties of light exposure dyes. Our findings can be used as basic information for applying the VLA antimicrobial performance of photosensitizer dyes to bioaerosol control researches.
바이오에어로졸 저감을 위한 가시광활성 항바이오 에어필터 연구

Public health continues to be threatened by bioaerosols. Herein, we introduce visible-light-activated (VLA) antimicrobial air filters for reducing and inactivation of bioaerosols. The VLA photosensitive organic dye (e.g., crystal violet) were stably immobilized using the silica/alumina sol-gel coating method. The coated air filters showed excellent antimicrobial activity against both bacteria and viruses under visible-light exposure conditions (>99.9%), especially in natural light (>99.99%). In addition, the VLA antimicrobial mechanisms were identified by quantifying the generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) through biochemical analysis.
