Ferromagnetic Properties of Bulk Fe-doped CeO2 Dilute Magnetic Semiconductors

Polycrystalline Fe-doped Ce1−xFexO2−δ has been fabricated by using the standard solid state reaction technique in the concentration range 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.05. Reitveld refinement of the X-ray diffraction patterns shows a pure CeO2 phase when x ≤ 0.03, and the appearance of a secondary impurity phase of Fe2O3 beyond that. Furthermore, by doping Fe into CeO2 powder, the ferromagnetism can be significantly enhanced to a maximum value for x = 0.03, but degrades quickly with further doping. Magnetization results reveal that the large room-temperature ferromagnetism observed in Fe-doped CeO2 powder originates from a combined effect of oxygen vacancies and transition metal doping.

The magnetic properties, thermal stability and anti-corrosion properties of Cr_(86)Al₁₄ spin valves mulitilayers were studied. It was found that the magnetic properties of Cr_(86)Al₁₄ spin valves depend on the thickness of antiferromagnetic, ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic layers. Exchange coupled field (Hex) and magnetoresistance ratio (%) showed the largest value of 20 Oe, 2 % in glass/Cr_(86)Al₁₄(600 Å) / Ni_(81)Fe_(19)(50 Å) / Cu(40 Å) / Ni_(81)Fe_(19)(40 Å) spin valves The Hex, MR ratios (%) of CrAl and FeMn spin valves were decreased with increasing annealing temperatures and were lost at 150 ℃, 250 ℃ respectively. Based on these result, it was elucidated that CrAl is more thermally stable than FeMn. It was also shown that there was no change of Hex, MR ratios in CrAl, while FeMn was changed and lost 15 days later in corrosion resistance test under 35 ℃, 90 % humidity condition. FeMn was found to be pitted and peeled off 15 days later by SEM micrographic analysis.

Optimum heat treatment producing P.C. wire is the most important for the further drawing. Drawability depends on the metallic microstructure and mechanical properties. Mechanical properties depend on the amount of pro-eutctoid ferrite and the fineness of pearlite. The amount of ferrite and the fineness of pearlite are dominated by the solid solution treatment and the cooling velocity from the sutenitizing temperature to the patenting temperature. Basides the above, the tension stress is very effective for ausenitizing and eutectoid reaction. The results obtained from this investigation could be summarized as follows. 1. Drawabdity was lowered by the precipitation of pro-eutectoid ferrite as the solid solution treating time was longer. 2. Slow cooling velocity from solid solution treating temperature to the isothermal transformation temperature made the drawability poor. 3. Solid solution treatment under tension stress was very effective for reducing the solid solution treating time and for refining the pearlite. 4. Solid solution treatment under tension stress and rapid cooling from 950 % to 540 % made the pearlite fine and increased drawability.
