Cell-Free miR-27a, a Potential Diagnostic and Prognostic Biomarker for Gastric Cancer

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been demonstrated to play an important role in carcinogenesis. Previous studies revealed that miRNAs are present in human plasma in a remarkably stable form that is protected from endogenous RNase activity. In this study, we measured the plasma expression levels of three miRNAs (miR-21, miR-27a, and miR-155) to investigate the usefulness of miRNAs for gastric cancer detection. We initially examined plasma miRNA expression levels in a screening cohort consisting of 15 patients with gastric cancer and 15 healthy controls from Korean population, using TaqMan quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. We observed that the expression level of miR-27a was significantly higher in patients with gastric cancer than in healthy controls, whereas the miR-21 and miR-155a expression levels were not significantly higher in the patients with gastric cancer. Therefore, we further validated the miR-27a expression level in 73 paired gastric cancer tissues and in a validation plasma cohort from 35 patients with gastric cancer and 35 healthy controls. In both the gastric cancer tissues and the validation plasma cohort, the miR-27a expression levels were significantly higher in patients with gastric cancer. Receiver-operator characteristic (ROC) analysis of the validation cohort, revealed an area under the ROC curve value of 0.70 with 75% sensitivity and 56% specificity in discriminating gastric cancer. Thus, the miR-27a expression level in plasma could be a useful biomarker for the diagnosis and/or prognosis of gastric cancer.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the screening ratio and practical skill test of the exam of Department of Physical Education in National Universities which are the institutions to nurture PE teachers to make a comparative analysis of common things and differences of those exams. To do the study, 11 National Universities which have Department of Physical Education were selected as subjects. Screening ratio and details of practical skill test were analyzed based on the exam materials of those colleges in 2012. From the analysis, it was found that exam of department of Physical Education was composed of National College Entrance Exam, Practical Skill Test, Comprehensive School Record of High School, Interview and Aptitude and Personality test and universities have different schemes to select their students. Among them, National Universities Entrance Exam was the most important element. Practical skill test was composed of basic physical strength test and sports skill test. There were various variations in the number and contents of the measurements among schools. Basic physical strength elements were limited to agility, quick reaction, muscle endurance and flexibility. For sports skill test, gymnastics, athletics, volley ball, basketball, soccer, handball and dancing were tested. Accordingly, it is thought necessary to introduce more objective and valid examination system to verify qualifications and capabilities of the students suitable for department of physical education which nurtures future PE teachers.

카이랄성을 갖는 액정화합물들의 경우, 일반적으로, 가격이 상당히 고가이며, 합성 및 응용 과정에서 그 카이랄성을 잃어버리는 경우가 있어 상용화되는데 많은 제약이 있다. 반면 콜레스테롤은 분자 자체가 가지는 카이랄성 때문에 주기적인 나선구조를 갖는 콜레스테릭 액정을 형성하며, 나선구조의 피치 변화에 따라 특정한 파장 영역에서의 빛만을 반사하는 선택반사특성을 나타낸다. 본 연구에서는 가격이 비교적 저렴하고, 광학적 특성을 갖는 콜레스테롤을 다양한 길이의 알콕시기를 갖는 벤조산과 반응시켜 콜레스테릭 에스터 유도체를 합성하여, 알콕시기의 길이가 액정화합물의 특성에 미치는 영향에 대하여 연구하였다.

Recommended seismic design guide for the flat bottom vortical-cylindrical oil storage tanks in KS B 6225 is presented. Under earthquake excitations, the hydrodynamic pressure exerted on the tank walls produces overturning moment which may cause either a failure of the anchors or a buckling of the tank shell near its base. The basis for establishing design loads due to hydrodynamic pressure is described including seismic zone risk map in Korea, zone coefficients and the essential facilities factor. This procedure for calculating applied compressive stress on the shell base subjecting to seismic load and for estimating the allowable buckling stress is described.

Hydrodynamic behavior and response of vertical-cylindrical liquid-storage tank is considered. The equation of the liquid motion is shown by Laplace's differential equation with the fluid velocity potential. The solution of the Laplace's differential equation of the liquid motion is expressed with the modified Bessel functions. Only rigid tank is studied. The equivalent masses and heights for the tank contents are presented for engineering design model.
