This paper aims to analyze Vonnegut’s two novels, Galapagos and Timequake, which show the present crises that modern society is undergoing and the possible disasters it might meet. In Galapagos, the author studies the corrupt nature of human culture as it is controlled by Big brain and presents an apocalyptic warning regarding many problems of modern society, including overpopulation, war, terror, slavery and environmental pollution. In the process he asks humankind to recover its humanity and preserve its dignity, while developing a world view which will help us overcome these cultural crises. In Timequake, Vonnegut thinks that mankind is threatened by an absurd social system, inhuman policies, destructive wars and cold-hearted selfishness. After contemplating the problems of modern society, he suggests practical measures to improve conditions and offers a reformative vision of how to better his fellows. As a consequence, Vonnegut has a deep insight into many problems of modern society and tries to make humankind aware of the crisis through his apocalyptic warnings. As his intention is to make us aware of our need to become more human, he presents a message of salvation for mankind through these works.

Galapagos shows the lives of humans that have evolved according to the ‘natural selection’ and have been deprived of human characterics such as feelings and thoughts, maintaining only the instincts of survival and some physical features. Leon, the son of a novelist named Trout, is the narrator who has watch-ed the lives of human beings on earth over a million years. According to his observations, men always deceive each other, destroy nature and their circumstances, and make terrible weapons which could lead to the end of human existence. Therefore the only way to survive is to become less intelligent by retrogression. This is indispensible for humaniny to be safe and be happy. Ultimately, the main reason that caused the change in human beings was their ‘big brains’ which they took such pride in and entirely depended on. So the only way to preserve life is for the ‘highly developed big brain’ to become extinct. Throughout Leon's observations over the million years, Vonnegut points out several problems and criticizes the current situation of our society such as excessive population, torture, slavery, and the fearful destruction of nature. In additon, he also thinks selfish human beings are taking advant-age of Darwin's theory of ‘natural selection’ to use ‘social selection’ as a way of gaining their own selfish and malicious goals. In Galapagos, Vonnegut seems to succeed in subverting this vicious end. As a way of overcoming the viciousness of the ‘big brain’ and the crisis of human civilization, Galapagos gives profound consideration on the regaining of humanity and preserving of life. And it also sends an apocalyptic warning to human civilization and delivers a message of relief with a deep vision of the future through the biggest tragedy of Galapagos.

초음파를 이용한 방아쇠 무지의 경피적 절개술

Purpose: Trigger thumb is a common condition with a prevalence rate up to 3% among the adults. The main pathophysiology is locking of the flexor tendon at the A1 pulley. Treatments include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, steroid injection, and surgical A1 pulley release. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of ultrasound-guided percutaneous release of trigger thumb. Methods: The author prospectively reviewed 37 patients who had undergone ultrasound-guided percutaneous release by the same surgeon from January 2012 to June 2014. The effect of ultrasound-guided A1 pulley release was evaluated by using visual analogue scale (VAS) score, disabilities of arm, shoulder, and hand (DASH) score, and grip and pinch strengths preoperatively and at 12weeks after the surgery. In addition, complications related with the procedure were evaluated. Results: Triggering and locking were resolved in all patients after surgery. VAS and DASH improved from 5.0±1.8 and 45.8±16.9 preoperatively to 0.3±0.6 and 16.2±6.3 at 12 weeks, respectively (p=0.019 and p=0.021). Grip and pinch strengths statistically improved from33.5±8.6 kg and 36.7±8.1 kg, preoperatively 46.2±6.1 kg and 47.1±7.4 kg, respectively (p=0.026 and p=0.041). Complications such as incomplete resection, neurologic symptoms or wound infection were not found throughout the period of the study. Conclusion: Ultrasound-guided percutaneous A1 pulley release provides complete relief of symptoms with no major complication in trigger thumb. 목적: 방아쇠 무지는 성인에서 유병률이 3%에 이를 정도로 흔한 질환이다. 방아쇠 무지에 있어서 초음파를 이용한 경피적 절개술이 주변 구조물을 명확히 확인할 수 있어 보다 안전하고 효과적인 A1 활차의 절개가 가능한 지와 합병증 발생또한 줄일 수 있는지 알아보고자 하였다. 방법: 37명을 대상으로 전향적으로 연구하였다. 수술은 국소 마취하에 초음파를 이용하여 시행하였으며, 수술 전 및수술 후 12주 째 잠김 증상, 통증(visual analogue scale, VAS) 및 기능적 지표(disabilities of arm, shoulder, and hand, DASH), 악력 및 집게력으로 결과를 판정하였고, 합병증을 조사하였다. 결과: 수술 후 추시 중 불완전 절제 및 신경학적 증상 등과 같은 합병증은 발견되지 않았다. VAS 및 DASH는 수술 전각각 5.0±1.8, 45.8±16.9에서 수술 후 12주 째 0.3±0.6, 16.2±6.3으로 호전되었으며(p=0.019, p=0.021). 악력 및 집게력 또한 수술 전 각각 33.5±8.6 kg, 36.7±8.1 kg에서 수술 후 12주 째 46.2±6.1 kg 및 47.1±7.4 kg로 호전되었다(p=0.026, p=0.041). 결론: 방아쇠 무지에 대한 수술적 치료로서 초음파를 이용한 경피적 활차 절개술은 비교적 안전하고 효과적인 증상 호전을 기대할 수 있는 유용한 방법으로 생각된다.

호텔 종사원의 감정노동이 감정고갈에 미치는 영향: 상사 및 동료지원의 조절효과를 중심으로

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between emotional labor and emotional exhaustion of hotel employees, and to investigate the moderating effects of supervisor support and coworker support. A self-administrated survey was conducted for employees of special class 1 hotels in Seoul for 2 months from May 1st to June 30th, 2017. The responses of 314 people were used in the analysis. Emotional dissonance of hotel employees has an effect of raising emotional exhaustion, and emotional effort has an effect of reducing it. Supervisor and coworker supports showed no moderating effect in the relationship between emotional dissonance and emotional exhaustion. However, the supports showed a statistically significant negative moderating effect in the relationship between emotional effort and emotional exhaustion. Hotel companies should continually pursue efforts to improve job satisfaction and mental health of employees by actively seeking for factors that can alleviate emotional exhaustion.

The purpose of this study was to investigate sales training that salespersons already had and that they wanted to have, and to analyze the effects of their characteristics an sales training which they wanted to have. A total of 500 questionnaire were distributed to salespersons of department stores in Daegu and 297 samples were used for the statistical analyses such as frequency, t-test and ANOVA. The results suggested that salesperson wanted to have more sales training and to have different training contents and educational methods from what they had have. Also, there were significant differences in training contents and educational methods that salespersons wanted to have according to their age, educational level, and work experience.
