        Genetic Recombination by Protoplast Fusion in Streptomyces scabies

        The double mutants for protoplast fusion and genetic mapping on the chromosome were obtained as Streptomyces scabies L1(leu met) and N1(nic his) using UV irradiation. The protoplast formation and regeneration of these two strains were also investigated to progress the strain improvement by means of protoplast fusion. Protoplasts were obtained by treatment with 1 ㎎/㎖ of lysozyme in the P reduced medium. Each mutant was treated with 44% of PEG 1000 for protoplast fusion, and recombination frequency showed to be 1.4×10^(-3). Relative recombinant frequencies in each markers by means of selective media could be used for genetic analysis and gene mapping.

        비골골절의 진단시 전산화단층촬영의 유용성

        Purpose: The nasal bone fracture is the most common type of facial bone fracture. In making a diagnosis, physical findings are much more important than the simple radiologic findings. Facial bone CAT scan can provide the accurate diagnosis and the correct location of nasal bone fractures, so it can be lessoned with proper intervention. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of facial bone CAT scan in the diagnosis of nasal bone fractures.Methods: The medical records and facial bone CAT scan of 45 patients clinically suspected nasal bone fracture but was not diagnosed on simple radiologic findings were analyzed.Results: All of the 45 patients were confirmed as nasal bone fractures in the facial bone CAT scan. The most common cause of fracture was assault. The mean age was 23.2 years. Physical findings were tenderness (100%), swelling(93.3%), epistaxis(66.6%), deviation (42.2 %), external wound(17.7%) and crepitus(4.4%) in order. Conclusions: It was concluded that the simple radiologic findings can not be conclusive, where the physical findings indicate a suspected nasal bone fracture. The facial bone CAT scan was more reliable for the correct diagnosis and follow-on treatment.

        Pseudomonas aeruginosa 감염창상에 사용되는 국소제제들의 항균효과 및 창상치유 효과의 비교

        Purpose: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an etiologic agent in serious wound infection. Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection is problematic because this organism is resistant to many antimicrobial drugs. The purpose of this study was to compare the bactericidal effect of commonly used topical agents and their effect on wound healing. Methods: Pseudomonas aeruginosa-infected full- thickness skin defect was developed on the mouse to compare 3 commonly used topical agents-Betadine, 2% Gentamicin solution and 0.3% Acetic acid with the control group. Wound size change, bacterial colony counts and histologic findings of each groups were analyzed. Results: The wound size decreased in all treated groups as compared with the control group. However, there was no statistical difference. Gentamicin solution group was showed the lowest bacterial colony count and statistically significant difference compared with the control group(p=0.032). Other treated groups were also effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, but not different statistically. Histologic findings revealed that epithelialization, granulation tissue formation and microvessel proliferation were increased and necrosis and inflammation were decreased in all treated groups compared to the control group, but not different statistically. Betadine group significantly increased granulation tissue formation compared to the control group (p= 0.041). Conclusion: There is no universal topical agent that enhances most aspects of wound healing while simultaneously decreasing the bacterial concentration. However, Gentamicin solution may be an optimal topical agent for Pseudomonas aeruginosa infected wound. Further study should experiment on human with Gentamicin solution to confirm a effect on Pseudomonas aeruginosa infected wound for clinical applications.

        Chondroid Syringoma on Face

        Chondroid syringoma is a rare mixed tumor of the skin which is composed of both mesenchymal and epithelial cells. Its incidence at less than 0.1% and is frequently located on the head and neck. Chondroid syringoma is easily confused with epidermal cysts. Since malignant forms of chondroid syringoma have been reported, accurate and timely diagnosis is important for proper management. We report clinical and histological features of chondroid syringoma in 5 patients treated at our institution. In most of the cases, chondroid syringoma presented as a round, firm, nodular or cystic lesion that had well marginated heterogeneity in sonography. Clinically, all of the lesions were removed by simple excision. Microscopically, all five tumors were well circumscribed and consisted of epithelial, myoepithelial, and stromal components. The epithelial component formed tubules lined by one or more rows of eosinophilic epithelial cells. The outer layer of tubules appeared to be flattened myoepithelial cells. The stroma is myxoid and contained spindle shaped myoepithelial cells. We expect that the clinical, sonographic, and histological data from our report may help clinicians who are confronted with various kinds of analogous facial lesions to decide the most proper management for their patients.

        서울 지방의 공중 진균에 관한 연구

        An aerial survey for fungal flora in Seoul has been carried out by Petri plate exposure method for a period of one year. A total of 2227 fungal spores appeared in the plates. Of these, Cladosporium was the commonest fungus representing 43.5% of the total spore count followed by Penicillium (15.8%). Alternaria (10.5%), and Aspergillus (3.8%). There were seasonal variations in the prevalence of fungal spores. The occurrence of these fungi was greatly affected by climatic conditions. However, Alternaria appeared to prefer warmer weather. A comparison of fungal population from the outdoor and indoor air was also investigated to support the view that Alternaria is abundant population from the outdoor air and that Cladosporium from the indoor air depending on their availability in the atmosphere.

        효모세포의 당과 아미노산의 운반에 관한 연구 II

        Saccharomyces cerevisiae J170, a mutant, was used for $DL-^{14}C-leucine$ uptake during the sporulation and vegetative stage. $^{14}C-Leucine$ uptake into yeast cells appeared the highest at pH 6.0, indicating the same result of glucose transport, $^{14}C-Leucine$ uptake in sporulation period was higher than in growth phase, showing the evidence that leucine is more required for protein synthesis. This tendency has the evidence tht leucine is more required for protein synthesis. This tendency has the evidence that leucine is more required for protein synthesis. This tendency has been also supported from the result of Km values of leucine uptake in two stages of yeast. Leucine uptake was inhibited by 2,4-dinitrophenol in two stages of yeast. This means that leucine transport system is associated with energy dependent in both stages. The contents of all amino acid in growth phase cells were higher than those of sporulation stge cells, and those of methionine and tyrosine were showed in trace during the sporulation stage. In contrast, the content of glutamic acid in sporulation stage was compared with those of other amino acids.
