Terrestrial insect fauna of the herbaceous stratum of reservoir embankment slopes, Korea

Herbaceous strata with a dominant plant community 50 m in size were selected from 10 reservoir embankment areas in Shinan-gun, a southwestern island region of South Korea. Terrestrial insects were sampled 100 times with quantitative sweep sampling to investigate the insect fauna and their associꠓation with flora. The survey areas were mainly dominated either by Phragmites japonica or Miscanthus sinensis plant species. A total of 1,948 individual insects representing 173 species from 64 families within 9 orders were collected. The number of species was the highest at Jaeundo while the Shannon-Wiener diversity index was the highest at Saokdo. Similarity analysis showed that the insect species composiꠓtion tended to be similar among survey sites with plant communities comprising the same dominant plant species. Species diversity was the highest in April while the number of individual insects was the highest in September. Petaphora maritima and Ochetellus glaber were the dominant and subdominant insect species, with a high frequency of occurrence at these sites. The results of this study could be applied towards biodiversity conservation and monitoring of reservoir embankment areas in the future.

Purpose: We evaluated the causative microorganisms, dispositions, and visual prognosis of endogenous endophthalmitis. Methods: The records of 12 eyes of 10 patients who were diagnosed with endogenous endophthalmitis were retrospectively reviewed with respect to the causative microorganisms, dispositions, visual prognosis, initial visual acuity, time interval between onset of symptom, and the course of treatment. Results: Three of the four eyes infected with a candida species recovered a visual acuity of 0.1 or better; none of the other infected eyes reached higher than 0.1 (p=0.024). Initial visual acuity of less than hand movement reached globe loss in three eyes, while 5 eyes with initial visual acuity of better than hand movement of seven eyes did not lose the globe (p=0.045). Three out of patients with a time interval between onset of symptoms and treatment of more than five days did not lose the globe, while those with a time interval of less than five days of eight eyes did not lose the globe. Conclusions: Visual prognosis and globe survival depends mainly on the underlying microorganism, initial visual acuity, the time interval between the onset of symptom, and treatment. Patients with candida endophthalmitis had good visual outcome compared with the others, and thus microbial culture identification is a useful predictor of visual acuity and treatment. 목적: 내인성 안내염의 미생물, 소인 및 시력예후를 알아보고자한다. 대상과 방법: 내인성 안내염으로 진단받은 10명 12눈을 대상으로 미생물과 소인에 대한 임상양상과 미생물, 초진시력 및 치료시작시기 에 따른 시력예후에 대하여 의무기록을 후향적으로 검토하였다. 결과: 칸디다균 안내염은 0.1 이상의 시력이 4눈 중 3눈으로 0.1 이상의 시력이 7눈 중 한눈도 없는 다른 미생물에 의한 안내염보다 최종시력이 좋았다(p=0.024). 초진시력이 손 흔듦 이하인 경우 5눈 중 3눈을 잃은 반면 손 흔듦보다 좋을 때는 7눈 중 한 눈도 잃지 않아 예후가 좋았다(p=0.045). 증상이 시작 된 후 치료 시작까지의 기간이 5일을 넘은 경우 4눈 중에 3눈이 눈을 잃었으나, 5일 이하인 경우 8눈 중 한 눈도 잃지 않아 예후가 좋았다(p=0.017). 결론: 내인성 안내염의 미생물과 초진시력, 증상이 시작된 후 치료하기까지의 기간이 눈 보존 및 시력예후에 영향을 주는 요인으로 나타났다. 칸디다균에 의한 안내염의 경우 다른 미생물에 의한 경우에 비해 좋은 시력예후를 보여 미생물 배양은 치료뿐 아니라 최종 시력 예측을 가능케 한다.

2018년 2월 9일부터 16일간 열전을 치른 평창올림픽이 25일 막을 내렸다. 강원도 평창, 정선, 강릉에서 종목별로 구분되어 치러진 이번 동계올림픽은 대회 마지막 날까지 컬링과 봅슬레이에서 메달을 추가하여 종합 7위라는 좋은 성적으로 유종의 미를 거두었다. 무엇보다 이번 올림픽은 다른 관점으로 대회를 볼 수 있는 계기를 마련해주었다는 점에서 나에게 더욱 특별했다. 바로 국민들을 감동시키고 여러 패러디 열풍을 통해 응원을 펼친 '컬링' 때문이다.
인공구조물과 어류 데이터 기반 서울 도림천의 종적 연속성 평가

The vertical connectivity of the river aquatic ecosystem was evaluated based on fish and artificial structures in Dorim stream, an urban stream in Seoul. As a result of a survey in the downstream area in 100.0 m of a total of 71 artificial structures, 13,728 individuals of fishes belonging to five orders, seven families, and 25 species were investigated, with the dominant species Zacco platypus and the subdominant species Rhynchocypris oxycephalus. As for endemic species, seven species were investigated and in terms of feeding characteristics, omnivorous species were the most common with 17 species (68%). Also an alien species, Poecilia reticulata was found. Fish species tended to decrease as the survey was conducted to upstream. Based on the movement characteristics of the fish species and the features of artificial structure survey results, the longitudinal continuity of each artificial structure was evaluated as 43 continuity, two damaged, 19 discontinuity, and seven absent. In inclined structures, stream velocity was found to be the main factor for discontinuity. In vertical structures, the down depth and head drop appeared to be the main factors for discontinuity. The results of this survey are expected to serve as basic data for the conservation of river aquatic ecosystems in the future.
