Light extinction characteristics of soot particles in ethylene and propane inverse diffusion flames have been experimentally investigated. The measured data suggested that the refractive index of soot particles varies with light wavelength due to PAH contents existing during the soot growth process. The results showed that the scattering effect is less important as the size of secondary particles rarely affects the optical properties of the soot even when the size is large enough to deviate from Rayleigh assumptions.

The dependency of wavelength on the light extinction due to the presence of soot particles has been experimentally studied with ethylene and propane co-flow diffusion flames under elevated pressure conditions. The wavelength dependency was not observed at the soot oxidation/emission region: however, the weak dependency of wavelength was observed at the soot formation region in diffusion flames.

Soot particles of diesel and bunker-A with different sulfur contents were generated by pyrolysis with varying conditions of fuel flow rate and residence time in the ceramic tube at 1300 oC. TEM and particle size analyzer were used for analysing the primary and the secondary particle size distributions. The results showed that the sulfur content in fuel influences soot inception while the fuel concentration and residence time affects the growth of incepted soot particles.

The performance of a chevron type plate heat exchanger was analysed by using Ansys v13.0. The heat transfer, pressure drop and flow patten of plate heat exchanger were investigated with chevron pitch and mass flow ratio, and its flow characteristics was analyzed. As a result, the reduction of the pitch showed the increased heat transfer performance and high pressure drop simultaneously. When the chevron pitch ratio was less than 100%(p/h ratio=5.2), the fluid flowed through the passage between chevron, thus the pressure drop increased significantly.

This paper refers an approach to automatic diagnostic system of PLC-controlled automated manufacturing system. Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) plays a key role to operate the manufacturing system. It is used not only to control the automatic facilities, but also to handle the abnormal circumstances during process operation. Even though the PLC part for abnormal situation is programmed, however, it is often takes much time and effort to find out which device encountered the problems and what caused. This paper proposes an approach which helps to overcome these diagnostic issues. The proposed approach has three steps. First, it builds standard normal signal patterns from the stable operation cycles. Second, comparing and analyzing between normal pattern and gathered real time signals. And last, it reports the pattern differences and the possible causes when error occurred.
