Study Design: Experimental animal study. Purpose: To evaluate pain-related behavior and changes in glial activity in the spinal dorsal horn after combined sciatic nerve compression and nucleus pulposus (NP) application in rats. Overview of Literature: Mechanical compression and inflammation caused by prostaglandins and cytokines at disc herniation sites induce pain. Structural changes and pain-associated cytokines in the dorsal root ganglia and spinal dorsal horn contribute to prolonged pain. Glial cells in the spinal dorsal horn may also function in pain transmission. Methods: The sciatic nerve was compressed with NP for 2 seconds using forceps in the NP+nerve compression group; the shamoperated group received neither compression nor NP; and the control group received no operation. Mechanical hyperalgesia was measured for 3 weeks using von Frey filaments. Glial activity in the spinal dorsal horn was examined 7 days and 14 days postsurgery using anti-glial fibrillary acidic protein and anti-Ionized calcium binding adaptor molecule-1 antibodies to detect astrocytes and microglia, respectively. Results: Mechanical hyperalgesia was detected throughout the 14-day observation in the NP+nerve compression group, but not in control or sham-operated groups (p <0.05). Both astrocytes and microglia were significantly increased in the spinal dorsal horn of the NP+nerve compression group compared to control and sham groups on days 7 and 14 (p <0.05). Conclusions: Nerve compression with NP application produces pain-related behavior, and up-regulates astrocytes and microglia in the spinal dorsal horn, suggesting that these glia may be related to pain transmission.

There is no report that describes in detail the radiological and intraoperative findings of rickets with symptomatic cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament. Here, we describe a case of X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets with cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament presenting unique radiological and intraoperative findings. The patient presented progressive tetraparesis. Magnetic resonance imaging studies revealed severe cervical spinal cord compression caused by ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament. Computed tomography scans revealed homogeneously increased vertebral bone density. An expansive laminoplasty was performed. At surgery, homogeneously hard lamina bone was burdened in drilling and opening of the laminae. The patient’s neurological symptoms were improved postoperatively. Bony fusion of the hinges occurred postoperatively. Therefore, expansive laminoplasty could be performed for symptomatic cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament with X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets. However, unusual bone characters should be taken into consideration for careful operation during surgery.
Seismic performance of exterior R/C beam-column joint under varying axial force
Yanbing Hu,Masaki Maeda,Yusuke Suzuki,Kiwoong Jin 국제구조공학회 2021 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.78 No.5
Previous studies have suggested the maximum experimental story shear force of beam-column joint frame does not reach its theoretical value due to beam-column joint failure when the column-to-beam moment capacity ratio was close to 1.0. It was also pointed out that under a certain amount of axial force, an axial collapse and a sudden decrease of lateral load-carrying capacity may occur at the joint. Although increasing joint transverse reinforcement could improve the lateral load-carrying capacity and axial load-carrying capacity of beam-column joint frame, the conditions considering varying axial force were still not well investigated. For this purpose, 7 full-scale specimens with no-axial force and 14 half-scale specimens with varying axial force are designed and subjected to static loading tests. Comparing the experimental results of the two types of specimens, it has indicated that introducing the varying axial force leads to a reduction of the required joint transverse reinforcement ratio which can avoid the beam-column joint failure. For specimens with varying axial force, to prevent beam-column joint failure and axial collapse, the lower limit of joint transverse reinforcement ratio is acquired when given a column-to-beam moment capacity ratio.

Autotetraploidy (2n=4X=36) five lines of Meiwa kumquat (Fortunella crassifolia Swingle, 2n=2X=18), which had been induced by treating the nucellar embryos with colchicines, were selected and investigated to determine the fruit characteristics. The fruit weight of tetraploid plants was heavier than that of diploid plants. The percentage of pericarp weight per fruit in tetraploid plants increased significantly compared to that of diploid plants. The sugar content in pericarp of tetraploid plants was significantly higher than that of diploid plants. The organic acid content of tetraploid plants was almost equal to that of diploid plants. Thus, it can be concluded that tetraploidy enhanced desirable traits such as larger fruit size with thicker pericarp and high sugar content in Meiwa kumquat.
Radioprotection Effects to the Radiation Side Effect in EEM (Extracts of Edible Mushrooms)

Presently, raditherapy is often used alone or in combination with anti-cancer medicine as a treatment for cancer. Chemosynthesis has been used as a radiation protection medicine. But, its use has been restricted due to serious side effects. ICR mice have often been used for malformation experiments as they were used in this research. Here, EEM (extracts of edible mushrooms (and extraction from Flammulina velutires and lyuophyllum ulmarium)), a natural product, was used as a radioprotective agent and its effects were examined. A decline in the fetus malformation rate was recognized when giveing EEM before the radiation irradiation. Moreover, a repression in the decrease of fetus weight was recognized, and the effect on radiation protection of EEM was explained at the individual level. And, I had the effect on protection that faced a corpuscle cell by the radiation by giving EEM was explained in the same way too. As for the cell level as well, it was proved that there was an effect on protection against radiation irradiation in the same way as the individual level. Furthermore, an examination was done about the effects on the external malformation to the radiation, the embryonic death rate and the sensitivity of the lymphocyte at the organogenesis stage. Furtheromore, the study was done about the effects on the malformation to the radiation, the embryonic death rate and the sensitivity of the lymphocyte at the fetus of the organogenesis stage.
Ferroelectric Domain Wall Structure in Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 Mixed Crystals by AFM
Makoto Iwata,Ikuo Suzuki,Kohei Katsuraya,Maeda Masaki,Naohiko Yasuda,Yoshihiro Ishibashi 한국물리학회 2005 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.46 No.1
Domain-wall structures in Pb(Zn1=3Nb2=3)O3-xPbTiO3 (PZN-xPT; x = 0 %, 8 %, 20 %) crystals were investigated by using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Ferroelectric and ferroelastic domainwallstructures were observed on the etched surface. In the rhombohedral phase, a zigzag domainwall structure was newly found. We showed that all of the ferroelastic domain-wall structures observed in the tetragonal and rhombohedral phases can be explained by the Sapriel theory, and concluded that no ferroelectric charged domain-wall exists in the PZN-xPT (x = 8 %, 20 %) crystal without an external eld. The symmetry of the crystal phase in PZN-8 %PT at room temperature is discussed. It was also found that the ngerprint pattern in PZN disappears after the poling process, even in a weak eld of about 50 V/cm, which is about 1/20 of the coercive field.
