Rifampin is one of the first line drugs for treating tuberculosis, but it might be associated with serious adverse effects, including renal failure. We report here on a case of a 57-year-old patient who developed Henoch-Shonlein purpura during antituberculosis therapy that included rifampin. The patient converted to negative on the AFB smear for tuberculosis two weeks after the initial administration of antituberculosis medication. After treatment for 60 days, this patient was diagnosed with Henoch-Shonlein purpura by the purpura lesion on the lower legs, the leukocytoclastic vasculitis, the renal impairment and the pathological examination. After stopping rifampin, the skin lesions disappeared in about 10 days and his renal function gradually improved. This case study showed that Henoch-Schonlein purpura can be caused by rifampin during antituberculosis therapy and we recommend that the use of rifampin should be restrained when clinical symptoms of Henoch-Shonlein purpura are observed. This study was conducted to investigate the optimal conditions of collagen extraction from scales of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) using surface response methodology. Four independent variables of NaOH concentration and pretreatment fime in alkali pretreatment and enzyme concentration and treatment time in enzyme hydrolysis were used to predict a model equation for the collagen yield. The determinant coefficient ($R^2$) for the equation was 0.906. The values of the independent variables for the maximum yield were 0.32 N NaOH, 16.38 h alkali pretreatment time, 0.18% enzyme concentration, and 31.02 h enzyme treatment time. In the physicochemical properties of tuna scale collagen, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of tuna scale collagen showed the same migration distances as that of calf skin collagen. The amide A, I, II, and III regions of tuna scale collagen in Fourier transform infrared measurements were shown in the peaks of 3,414 $cm^{-1}$, 1,645 $cm^{-1}$, 1,553 $cm^{-1}$, and 1,247 $cm^{-1}$, respectively. The amount of imino acids in tuna scale collagen was 18.97% and the collagen denaturation temperature was $33^{\circ}C$. The collagen solubility as a function of NaCl concentration decreased to 4% NaCl (w/v) and the collagen solubility as a function of pH was high at pH 2-4 and sharply decreased from pH 4 to pH 7. Viscosity of the collagen solution decreased continuously until $30^{\circ}C$ and this decreasing rate slowed in the temperature range of $35-50^{\circ}C$.

The objective of this study was to elucidate the physicochemical characteristics of gelatin extracted from jellyfish Rhopilema hispidum. We investigated the proximate composition, amino acids, gel strength, gelling/melting points, dynamic viscoelastic properties, and viscosity of jellyfish gelatin. Jellyfish gelatin contained 12.2% moisture, 1.5% lipid, 2.1% ash, and 84.8% protein. Glycine, hydroxyproline, proline, and alanine were the predominant amino acids. The gelatin showed a gel strength of 31.2 kPa, a gelling point of $18.0^{\circ}C$, and melting point of $22.3^{\circ}C$. The gelatin was composed of ${\alpha}_1$-chain, ${\alpha}_2$-chain, ${\beta}$-chain, and ${\gamma}$-chain. During cooling and heating process, jellyfish gelatin showed lower elastic modulus (G') and loss modulus (G") values than mammalian gelatin. Jellyfish gelatin did not show superior rheological properties to mammalian gelatin, like other fish gelatin; however, it can be used in various food and cosmetic products not requiring high gel strength.

Purpose: Physical activity has been identified as a protective factor against cognitive impairment and dementia. Regular resistance exercise is effective for increasing brain metabolism, which increases the secretion of neuronal transmitters and cerebral blood flow; in turn, these enhance muscle flexibility and balance ability, reducing the risk of falls. Dementia patient is an acquired neurologic disease that produces many difficulties in social and daily life owing to multiple cognitive impairments. Therefore, the present study analyzed the effects of an exercise program aiming to improve muscle functions in dementia patients. Method: Elderly patients with mild dementia were randomly assigned to an elastic band resistance exercise group. The experimental group performed upper and lower extremity exercises three times per week for five months. Physical fitness was measured according to flexibility (sit & reach on a chair, Hold hands in the back), muscle strength (grip and lifting dumbbell), muscle endurance (chair leg squat), static balance (one-leg stance), dynamic balance (timed up-and-go test, 2-minute walking test), and gait ability before and after exercise. Result: Static balance ability in which the participant stood on one foot with eyes open (left and right) increased significantly, but the dynamic balancing ability in the timed up-and-go test did not improve significantly. Also, Muscle function ability in which the participant grip & lift dumbbell increased significantly, but the flexibility ability in the sit & reach on a chair test did not improve significantly. Cardiorespiratory function and gait speed improved significantly. Conclusion The five-month elastic band resistance exercise program improved muscle strength and endurance, cardiovascular function, and gait speed. Therefore, it may be an effective rehabilitation program for dementia patients.
