<P>Cross-linking effects of different phenolic substances (tannic acid, caffeic acid, and green tea extract) on mechanical and barrier properties of biodegradable films consisting of turmeric (Curcuma tonga) and gelatin were investigated. The results showed that degree of protein cross-linking increased with concentration of oxidized phenolic compounds, resulting in denser and stiffer film structures. Cross-link formation led to higher tensile strength and lower elongation-at-break (%), water vapor permeability, and water solubility of films with formation of aggregations. However, at high concentrations of phenolic compounds, molecular mobility increased due to grafting/branching reactions resulting in plasticizing effect. The developed films were applied as active packaging materials to fresh ground pork to extend shelf life, demonstrating good antioxidant activity and preventing lipid oxidation of fresh pork. No significant difference (p > 0.05) was noted in the overall acceptability of all samples by sensory analysis.</P>

<P>Biopolymer films based on apple skin powder (ASP) and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) were developed with the addition of apple skin extract (ASE) and tartaric acid (TA). ASP/CMC composite films were prepared by mixing CMC with ASP solution using a microfluidization technique to reduce particle size. Then, various concentrations of ASE and TA were incorporated into the film solution as an antioxidant and an antimicrobial agent, respectively. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), optical, mechanical, water barrier, and solubility properties of the developed films were then evaluated to determine the effects of ASE and TA on physicochemical properties. The films were also analyzed for antioxidant effect on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity and antimicrobial activities against <I>Listeria monocytogenes</I>, <I>Staphylococcus aureus</I>, <I>Salmonella enterica</I>, and <I>Shigella flexneri</I>. From the results, the ASP/CMC film containing ASE and TA was revealed to enhance the mechanical, water barrier, and solubility properties. Moreover, it showed the additional antioxidant and antimicrobial properties for application as an active packaging film.</P>
Isolation and characterization of two unrecorded yeast species in the order Filobasidiales
Inyoung Choi,Sathiyaraj Srinivasan 국립생물자원관 2024 Journal of species research Vol.13 No.1
The purpose of this study was to isolate and identify wild yeasts from soil samples collected in Daegu and Cheongju city, Republic of Korea. To identify the wild yeast strains, pairwise sequence comparisons of D1/D2 region of the 26S rRNA gene sequence were done using Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST). The cell morphologies were observed by phase contrast microscope and assimilation test are done using API 20C AUX kit. All strains were assigned to the phylum Basidiomycota. Among 13 strains, 11 strains were previously reported, but two strains were unreported from the Republic of Korea. The two unrecorded yeast strains, GW1-3 and PG1-1-10C, belong to the genus Solicoccozyma (family Piskurozymaceae, order Filobasidiales, class Tremellomycetes). The two strains had oval-shaped and polar budding cells. This research showed the morphological and biochemical properties of the two unreported yeast species that had not officially reported in Korea.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Intelligent food packaging systems are a new concept and allow real-time monitoring of food conditions using indicators that are clearly visible to consumers. Among intelligent food packaging types, gas indicators detect changes in gas components in headspaces of food packages. This study aimed to develop a carbon dioxide (CO2) indicator based on reactions of sodium caseinate (NaCas) and pectin. Transparency and pH were measured to confirm the changes in the appearance of the two polymers, and pectin concentrations were optimized for rates of change in transparency. In Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy analyses, NaCas and pectin suspensions were characterized, and the associations between protein–polysaccharide interactions and pH changes were determined. Subsequently, the developed indicator was applied to kimchi packaging, and changes in pH, titratable acidity, lactic acid bacteria, and CO2 contents of the kimchi packaging were determined and correlated with changes in transparency and pH of the indicator. The results demonstrated a strong correlation between parameters of kimchi and the indicator and warrant the use of visual CO2 indicator in food packaging.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A new carbon dioxide indicator composed of sodium caseinate and pectin. </LI> <LI> Sensitive response of the indicator towards carbon dioxide emitted from foods. </LI> <LI> A visually identifiable indicator with transparent, opaque, and coalescent steps. </LI> <LI> A possible tool for detection of food quality change with naked eyes. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

In this study, bacteriophage T4 (phage T4) was spray-dried into fine dry powders to enhance its usability as a biocontrol agent. We investigated a miscible carbohydrate system (maltodextrin and trehalose) on phage activity and identified the optimal formulation. The physicochemical properties of the microcapsules were also evaluated compared to differences in phage activity after spray-drying. Here, the formulation of the 11% (w/w) maltodextrin and 4% (w/w) trehalose miscible system showed the highest phage viability and antimicrobial activity. The storage stability test presented that this formulation efficiently maintained the phage titer at 22.6% RH, even when stored at 25°C. This result suggests that improving the approaches for phage microencapsulation and storage condition can improve phage usability, enabling the utilization of phages as alternative antimicrobial agents.
Accurate dB-Linear Variable Gain Amplifier With Gain Error Compensation
Inyoung Choi,Heesong Seo,Bumman Kim IEEE 2013 IEEE journal of solid-state circuits Vol.48 No.2
<P>This paper describes use of a novel exponential approximation for designing dB-linear variable gain amplifiers (VGAs). The exponential function is accurately generated using a simple error-compensation technique. The dB-linear gain is controlled linearly by the gate voltage, resulting in a simple and robust VGA. The proposed dB-linear VGA fabricated in a 65-nm CMOS process achieves a total variable gain range of 76 dB and dB-linear range greater than 50 dB with ±0.5-dB gain error. Under a 1.2-V supply voltage, the current consumption of the VGA is 1.8 mA and that of the output buffer is 1.4 mA. The input-referred in-band noise density is 3.5 nV/√{Hz} and the in-band OIP3 is 11.5 dBm. Due to the very simple circuit topology, the total active area of the VGA and the output buffer is extremely small, 0.01 mm2.</P>

The aim of the study is to examine the determinants of housing “gap speculation” from 2017 to 2020. Housing price have steeply increased last 5 years. The median apartment sale prices in the Seoul Metropolitan Areas (SMAs) increased by about 60.5% from about 370 million won in 2017 to about 590 million won in 2021. Housing policy makers believe that young people who cannot afford to buy a house with their own income and assets entered the housing market through excessive financial borrowing, and thereby housing prices skyrocketed based on the increasing effective demand. Extensive financial borrowing restrictions, however, have not stopped the rise in housing prices. This study focuses on what is a “gap speculation” and what characteristics a “gap speculator” has. Theoretically, they purchase houses under Jeonse contracts for capital gains without a plan to live there. From the study, we can find several things as follows: the older you are, more you are engaged in manager, and the households without a spouse are more likely to purchase a house as an investment demand. However, the actor of “gap speculation” are not from high-education, high-income groups, nor young people. They are not very different from ordinary citizens, and actions that can be estimated as gap speculation may not necessarily be regarded as speculation.
