Comparative study on Lee Kwangsoo’s Moojeong and Dokmaisod’s Samchai : Focused on Modern-oriented Consciousness and Female Consciousness

This paper is a study on comparative literature for examining the modern-oriented consciousness and the female consciousness appeared in Lee, Kwangsoo’s “Moojeong” and Dokmaisod’s “Samchai”. The purpose of this paper is to examine the modernity due to the introduction of western culture at that time considering the special characteristics of Korean and Thai society from the 1910s to 1930s, through the comparative study of the two works.
The historical background of the works is from the 1910s to 1930s, while Korea was under Japanese occupation, and Thailand remained independent from the Western powers, but under the rule of imperialism and military dictatorship. Korean intellectuals tried to find national liberation for independence, and intellectuals in Thailand tried to find the way to maintain independence and build a democratic society. At that time, Korea and Thailand began to be modernized economically and politically, and had the similarity of modernity of the same age.
“Moojeong”, the representative work of Lee Kwangsoo, presented the reformation ideology based on the nationalism and enlightenment, and emphasized the necessity of education. “Moojeong” was evaluated as the first modern novel in the history of literature, and has a significance as a groundbreaking monument of the literary history. “Samchai” is the only modern novel that depicted the importance of merchants under the capitalist system for the affection for the country and the economic independence of the nation, and is a novel that played a pioneering role for the concept of ‘making one’s own fortune’.
In “Moojeong”, Lee Kwangsoo tried to enlighten the foolishness of Joseon(Korea), eliminate the vice of conventions, and enlighten whole people. Inclination for modernity pursued by Hyeongsik is ultimately a reconstruction of Joseon society and personally a finding of true love. One is an educator who awakens Joseon as an intellectual and an international student, and the other is free love and free marriage to be free from oppression of a feudal marriage system and choose a spouse with their own will. Also from the 1910s to 1920s, educated women showed their desire to realize themselves in society, and young people who were eager for ‘the introduction of a new thought’ showed a modern-oriented consciousness to plant new civilization in Joseon through studying abroad.
Thai intellectuals from the 1920s to 1930s were students studying abroad above the middle class, who received Western-style education, and they recognized the acceptance of Western civilization and culture as a modernization and emphasized the importance of education. In “Samchai”, educational enthusiasm in the upper class of Thailand appears well. Studying abroad of upper class children was regarded as a way of maintaining the rise of family and social status. In addition, the intellectuals who received Western education tried to Westernize Thai society by breaking traditional culture of arranged marriage. In “Samchai”, Rat expressed the need for the intellectuals’ sense of ownership and modern-oriented consciousness for the economic independence and modernization of the homeland.
Within the society of patriarchal norms of traditional ethics in Korea and Thailand from the 1910s to 1930s, Lee Kwangsoo and Dokmaisod refused the traditional marriage and insisted on free relationship, love marriage and women’s search for the self.
Hyeongsik in “Moojeong” criticized early marriage, and suggested the idea of free love. He said that the engagement without love is invalid, and emphasized the importance of love. Seonhyeong is crying for free love, but he is more dependent on formalism and shows more passive attitude than active free love in a male-centered society. However, Lee Kwangsoo denied patriarchal traditional ethics with the aim of self - liberation and advocated the search for a woman’s self. He tried to liberate the individual, reforming unequal human relations in the family based on freedom and equality, and promote the prosperity and development of the nation ultimately at the same time. Instead of only questioning the discrimination between men and women, he pursued universal human emancipation, such as modern human liberation from patriarchy.
Meanwhile, Thai women were educated equally with men as Thailand received western new culture, and modern women began to practice free love and free marriage choosing their own spouses. Women were able to have independent female consciousness as they made their own decision and have free relationships. As a result, the female consciousness of modern Thai women became social and noble existence with self-awareness, from the values that have adhered to obedient and traditional women.
Through this comparison consideration, I could understand two authors, Lee Kwangsoo and Dokmaisod who played a pioneering role in the modern novels of both countries. “Moojeong”and “Samchai” depicted the situation of the times in a realistic way, and it can be said that they are representative modern novels of both countries in that they expresses affections for the country that are enlightenment factors and the ideology of free love of modern women that are modern factors.
