The Purpose of this paper is to compare the educated woman’s consciousness of two writers, a thai writer Dokmaisod(M.L. Buppha Nimmanhemint, 1905-1963) and a Korean writer Park Hwa Sung(1904-1988) considering their novels which publishing during 1930-1940.
The literary experiences of Park Hwa Sung and Dokmaisod is almost similar, grown in the wealthy family and high educated, father’s polygamy, and the social and political reform and their family’s downfall and so on.
From 1920s Thailand and Korea had faced the similar problems. Korea had fallen as a Japan’s colony, so problem of independence and self reliance and recovery of nationalism was recognized as the first duty of the educated women of that times, especially. Thailand, an absolute monarchy, had changed the political system into the constitutional monarchy in 1932. So problem of the overcome from the downfall of the royal family socially and the problem of woman’s consciousness was the main duty of the educated women, especially.
Under these social and political circumstances, Park Hwa Sung and Dokmaisod have created new heroines in their novels as high educated women, and mentioned about their society, feminism, the social and family status of women and their duty.
However, both of them asserted the free association with the other sex and abolition of the old traditional marriage system. But Dokmaisod thought the free association with the other sex as the way to choose her spouse with love and attached importance to the premarital purity and the duty of wise mother and good wife. Park Hwa sung has created the heroine who can struggle for the independence of nation and country with socialism. The free association with the other sex, the premarital purity and the duty of wise mother and good wife were not her theme in novels. The love which she asserted in her novels is the love to her comrades and her country.
