This study has been carried out to find the strategic method of reading curriculum in order to improve reading ability and elevate learning efficiency. The subject of this study is expository text and students in middle school. The study intends to provide teaching method by using graphic organizer. Therefore, teachers can utilize graphic organizer in education field. This study also aims to lead learners to have efficient reading skill through the method provided here.
First of all, the nature and importance of reading, as well as the concept of expository text has been examined. Then, this study examined how reading curriculum and exposition were described and how reading curriculum was set up in the 7th national curriculum. Through those studies, the further step of exposition reading curriculum has been discussed. To find out how exposition reading curriculum proceeds in the education field, a questionnaire survey has been implemented. As a result, learners expressed difficulty in reading exposition, and did not show interests on that. In spite of the importance of reading curriculum, teachers just carried out the class without effective teaching method and materials. Therefore, setting up specific learning method is urgent matter.
Accordingly, this study proposed teaching method of text structure and utilized graphic organizer for efficient reading curriculum. The paper attempted to develop graphic organizer which teachers and students can utilize on their own, after clarifying the theory of graphic organizer through formative process, concept, types, and effectiveness of graphic organizer. This study organized graphics for 12 expositions in the Korean textbook of the 7th national curriculum.
Graphic organizer has been prepared to achieve the most of its goal considering learning objective and learning process. It is based on its framework, however visual effects has been emphasized by my own perspective. Therefore, the graphic organizer leads those who represent difficulties on exposition to have interests of it, and learn it more effectively as well. Also, graphic organizer can be adjusted according to learner's level, background information, and learning atmosphere, so it can be utilized appropriately at the education field. Therefore, this study is considered as significant study in the sense of providing learning tools which can be implemented usefully in the education field and preparing for a reference in teaching structure of exposition.
Applying graphic organizer not only to expository text. but also to narrative text is expected through this study. To establish efficient learning method teaching process of graphic organizer in the curriculum needs to be described. Moreover, it is necessary to teach how to read in the learning field through more detailed graphic organizer training program in the future. Therefore, study of graphic organizer will be flourished and reading curriculum will be improved.
