청소년이 지각한 아동기의 정서적 외상과 공격성의 관계: 분노와 공감의 매개효과 = Relationship Between Childhood Emotional Trauma and Adolescent Aggression: Mediating Effect of Anger and Empathy

The purpose of this study was to investigate psychological pathways in which anger and empathy mediate the relationship between childhood emotional trauma and adolescent aggression. A total of 532 students from 5 different high schools participated in this study. The results are as follows: First, adolescents who experienced more emotional neglect and abuse from their parents in childhood are more likely to show chronic anger and physical, interpersonal aggression and be less empathetic in relationship. Second, adolescents with more chronic anger and less interpersonal empathy, which arise from childhood emotional trauma, showed more physical and interpersonal aggression in relationship. Third, chronic anger predicted aggressive behaviors through poor empathic ability. These findings suggest that physically and interpersonally aggressive behaviors of high schoolers are related not only to their experience of emotional abuse and neglect in childhood but also to feelings of chronic anger and poor empathic understanding of others’ thoughts and feelings. Major limitations and future directions of this study are followed by several educational and clinical suggestions from the findings of this study.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 청소년이 지각한 아동기의 정서적 외상인 학대와 방임이 공격성에 미치는 영향을 살펴봄에 있어 특성분노와 공감의 매개 역할을 조사하였다. 경기도와 서울 지역의 5개 고등학교에 재학 중인 1-2학년생 총 532명을 대상으로 수집된 자료를 분석한 결과, 특성분노와 공감은 아동기의 정서적 외상과 공격성향을 부분 매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 그 결과를 구체적으로 살펴보면 첫째, 아동기에 가족관계에서 정서적 학대와 방임을 많이 경험한 청소년일수록 특성분노와 신체적·관계적 공격성을 많이 보이는 반면, 인지적·정서적 공감능력이 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 정서적 외상으로 인해 특성 분노가 높고 대인관계에서의 공감능력이 낮을수록 신체적·관계적 공격성이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 특성분노는 공격성을 직접적으로 예측할 뿐 아니라 타인의 입장에 대한 낮은 공감능력을 통해 간접적으로도 공격성을 예측하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과들은 청소년기 교우관계에서 발생하는 신체적 공격성과 왕따 행위의 이면에는 아동기에 부모와의 관계에서 경험한 정서적 학대와 방임과 함께 특성분노와 공감능력의 결핍이 자리하고 있음을 보여준다. 본 연구 결과의 다양한 교육적, 상담적 의의와 함께 본 연구의 주요 제한점 및 추후 연구방향들이 논의되었다.
