자기복잡성 완충효과 연구 개관 및 향후 연구방향 = Overview of Buffering Effect of Self-Complexity and Future Study Directions

The representative study on the structure of self-concept is the buffering hypothesis of self-complexity by Linville(1987). She demonstrated that individuals whose self-aspects are diverse and heterogeneous are mentally healthier than those individuals who are not. Unlike her hypothesis, however, the following studies did not report consistent results with her study. Most of previous studies on self-complexity focuses on the empirical aspects examining the buffering effect of self-complexity, and there has been no review article that summarized self-complexity studies. This study reexamines the conflicting results from the studies on the buffering effects of self-complexity and analyzed domestic and overseas articles published up to recent with 3 categories(buffering effect, measurement, moderating variable) in order to solve such conflicts. As the methodology, this study reviewed the domestic and overseas self-complexity related articles published in academic journals that addressed buffering effects of self-complexity, measurement and moderating effect and classified them with reference to the classification method proposed by Koch and Shepperd(2004). Based on the previous study results on the above 3 categories, this study proposed the causes for the inconsistent results in the study on the buffering effects of self-complexity, future study directions and implications.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

자기개념의 구조에 관한 대표적인 연구로는 Linville(1987)의 자기복잡성 완충가설을 들 수 있다. 그녀는 연구를 통해 자기상이 다양하고 이질적인 사람들이 그렇지 않은 사람들보다 정신적으로 건강함을 밝혔다. 그러나 그녀의 주장과 달리 후속연구에서는 이에 대한 일관된 결과가 보고되지 못하였다. 지금까지 자기복잡성과 관련된 대부분의 선행연구는 자기복잡성의 완충효과를 알아보는 경험연구 위주로 이루어져 왔으며, 자기복잡성 연구들을 종합하여 개관한 연구는 없었다. 본 연구에서는 자기복잡성 완충효과에 대한 상충된 연구결과들을 재고하고, 이를 해결하기 위하여 최근까지 발표된 국내외 논문을 세 가지 범주(완충효과, 측정, 조절변인)로 나누어서 분석하였다. 연구방법은 자기복잡성과 관련된 국내외 학위논문과 학술지 게재논문에서 자기복잡성의 완충효과와 측정 및 조절효과를 다룬 논문을 일차적으로 검토하고 이를 Koch와 Shepperd(2004)가 제시한 범주화 방식을 참고하여 분류하였다. 본 연구에서는 상기한 세 가지 범주에 관한 선행연구의 내용분석 결과를 토대로 자기복잡성 완충효과에 관한 일관성 없는 연구결과의 원인 및 앞으로의 연구방향과 시사점을 제시하였다.
