자기평가와 자기분화가 우울에 미치는 영향

국문 초록 (Abstract)

자기개념과 우울과의 관계를 설명하는 핵심적인 두 가지 접근에는 기능론과 구조론적 입장이 있다. 기능론적 입장에서는 첫째, 자기를 극단적으로 평가하는 사람일수록 우울을 적게 경험한다는 해석과 둘째, 자기를 중립적으로 평가하는 사람일수록 우울을 적게 경험한다는 서로 다른 해석이 있어왔다. 아울러 구조론적 입장에서도 첫째, 자기상(self aspect)이 분화될수록 우울을 적게 경험한다는 주장과 둘째, 자기상이 분화될수록 우울을 많이 경험한다는 상반된 해석이 있어왔다.
이러한 두 가지 입장의 한계는 이 입장들이 자기개념과 우울을 설명하는 과정에서 중요한 중재변인으로 작용하고 있는 “차원간 분화와 차원내 분화”의 두 가지 분화를 고려하지 않았다는 점이다. 기능론적 접근의 문제점은 분화를 자기개념과 우울의 관계에서 전혀 고려하지 않았다는 점이며, 구조론적 접근의 문제점은 분화를 자기개념과 우울을 설명하는데 고려하였지만 그 속에 내재해 있는 분화의 두 가지 차원(차원내 분화와 차원간 분화)을 분리시켜 보지 않았다는 점이다.
본 연구에서는 기존의 두 가지 접근이 갖는 해석의 한계를 연구의 출발점으로 삼아 분화의 두 가지 차원이 자기개념과 우울과의 관계에서 중요한 중재변인이라는 사실을 검증하고자 한다.
한편 최근의 태도연구에서 논의되고 있는 두 가지 의미차원(평가적 의미와 서술적 의미)은 자기개념과 우울을 설명하는데 중요한 시사를 해준다. 단순하게 분화의 두 가지 차원만을 가지고 자기개념과 우울을 설명하는 경우, 차원내 분화가 높은 사람은 우울을 많이 경험하고 차원간 분화가 높은 사람은 우울을 적게 경험하는 원인을 설명할 수 없다.
본 연구에서는 두 가지 의미차원을 도입하여 이러한 원인을 밝히고자 한다. 차원내 분화가 높아서 우울을 많이 경험하는 사람은 자신을 평가적 의미차원에서 지각하기 때문이며 이와는 반대로 차원간 분화가 높아서 우울을 적게 경험하는 사람은 자신을 서술적 의미차원에서 지각하기 때문임을 검증하고자 한다.
이를 알아보기 위해 아래와 같은 세 가지 가설을 설정하였다. 첫째, 차원내 분화는 자기평가와 우울의 관계를 중재하지 않는 반면에 차원간 분화는 자기평가와 우울의 관계를 중재할 것이다. 둘째, 차원내 분화가 높을수록 우울을 많이 느끼고 차원간 분화가 높을수록 우울을 적게 느낄 것이다. 셋째, 차원내 분화가 높은 사람은 우울을 많이 느끼는 반면에, 차원간 분화가 높은 사람은 우울을 적게 느끼는 원인은 전자의 경우 자기를 평가적 의미차원에서 지각하는 반면에, 후자의 경우는 자기를 서술적 의미차원에서 지각하기 때문일 것이다.
이러한 가설들을 검증하기 위하여 Beck의 우울척도, 자기평가 척도, 자기분화 척도 및 의미차원 척도를 사용하여 연구 Ⅰ, 연구 Ⅱ 및 연구 Ⅲ을 실시하였다.
본 연구의 결과는 아래와 같다.연구 Ⅰ에서는 4가지 연구를 하였다. 예비연구에서는 기존의 자기분화(Scott의 자기분화)에서 차원내 분화와 차원간 분화의 개념을 분리해냈으며, 연구 Ⅰ-1에서는 대학생을 대상으로 우울을 통제하지 않은 상황에서 차원내 분화와 차원간 분화가 자기평가와 우울의 관계를 중재하는지를 알아보았고, 연구 Ⅰ-2에서는 대학생을 대상으로 사전 우울수준을 통제한 시험 상황에서도 동일한 중재효과가 나타나는지를 알아보았으며, 연구 Ⅰ-3에서는 대학생과 우울증 환자를 합한 집단에서도 중재효과가 나타나는지를 알아보았다. 그 결과 모든 집단에서 차원내 분화는 자기평가와 우울의 관계를 중재하지 않은 반면에 차원간 분화는 자기평가와 우울의 관계를 중재하는 것으로 나타나 첫 번째 가설이 지지되었다. 차원내 분화가 높은 사람은 자기평가수준에 관계없이 차원내 분화가 낮은 사람보다 우울을 많이 느낀 반면에, 차원간 분화가 높은 사람과 낮은 사람은 자기평가수준에 따라 우울을 경험하는 정도가 달랐다. 즉 차원간 분화가 높은 사람은 자기를 중립적으로 평가할수록 우울을 적게 느꼈으나, 차원간 분화가 낮은 사람은 자기를 극단적으로 평가할수록 우울을 적게 느꼈다.
연구 Ⅱ에서는 대학생 집단에서 차원내 분화, 차원간 분화 및 우울과의 관계를 알아 본 결과 두 번째 가설이 지지되었다. 즉 차원내 분화가 높은 사람은 낮은 사람보다 우울을 많이 느낀 반면에 차원간 분화가 높은 사람은 낮은 사람보다 우울을 적게 느꼈다.
연구 Ⅲ에서는 평가적 의미차원과 서술적 의미차원을 도입하여 차원내 분화가 높은 사람이 우울을 많이 느끼며 차원간 분화가 높은 사람이 우울을 적게 느끼는 원인을 알아본 결과, 세 번째 가설이 부분적으로 지지되었다. 즉 차원내 분화가 높은 사람은 자신을 평가적 의미차원에서 지각하기 때문에 우울을 많이 느끼나, 차원간 분화가 높은 사람은 자신을 서술적 의미차원에서 지각하기 때문에 우울을 적게 느끼는 것이 밝혀졌다.
본 연구는 기존의 자기 분화에서 차원내분화와 차원간 분화를 분리해 내서, 자기 개념과 우울의 관계를 설명하는 두 입장에서의 상반된 연구 결과를 설명하고 분화의 두 차원과 우울과의 관계에서 보이는 결과에 대한 원인을 밝힌 데 의의가 있다. 이 연구결과는 우울을 상담하는 과정에서 내담자로 하여금 자신에 대한 이질적인 자기상을 다양하게 갖도록 하며 자신을 서술적 의미차원에서 지각하도록 하는 전략이 포함되어야 할 것을 시사한다. 마지막으로 본 연구의 제한점과 앞으로의 연구 방향을 논의하였다.
