All the living creatures express their feelings. As human beings grow older, they learn to control their emotion through several experiences, and in some cases they also learn to hide their feelings from others. However the feeling of sorrow cannot be hidden completely even if one tries to. The positive feelings including pleasure and joyfulness can be controlled in order to be hidden from others but the feeling of sorrow and anger cannot be controlled easily. In addition, the feeling of anger can be forgotten through other positive incidents but the feeling of sorrow gets deeper and deeper as the time goes and leaves the memory of it. The 'memory' here means the recall of the same feeling of sorrow when facing the similar past of sad and hurting event.
This painting work collection is based on the study of the sorrow in the eyes which is the series of <Sorrow in Silence>. All the works in these series, reptiles or plants are placed at the back of a young woman, and with dreamy color, it makes beautiful bright back image of her but still manages to express a depression. During the process of work, I have realized that many people including myself buried the feeling of sorrow -the unsolved feeling after a shocking or sad event- in our hearts. Additionally, I figured that most of the people regard the sorrow as the uncomfortable reality which they do not want to face directly. Therefore, I turned my works of <Sorrow in Silence> series into the work where the sorrow is directly confronted. I chose abandon animals for the model of these work series. I could see the deeper feelings in the eyes of the animals from the abandoned animal shelter, than human beings. Moreover, the feelings that were shown in the eyes of animals who did not speak unlike human beings, had a strong persuasion to my subject of works.
All human beings seem like that they are not completely free from the feeling of sorrow both in the past and the present. Nevertheless, people repeat the joyful and productive activities to forget the sorrow. I expressed this life of human beings with the life of abandoned animals in the series of <Sorrow in Silence> which tried to explain the fact that abandoned animals expect either their owners to come back or the new owners to appear and if not, just suffer each day with hope and despair.
This painting work collection, studies and explains the meaning of the feelings shown in the eyes of abandoned animals, and furthermore it reviews the issues to improve in the future. In the introduction of the studies, it explained how the model changed from a young woman`s back to the eyes of abandoned animals. In the body of the studies, it explores the steps of the sorrow in details and examines what meanings it contains in psychological ways. In addition, it explained how the photos were taken and how they affected the works additionally, what materials and techniques were used.
Through this research, I have realized that by actually facing the difficult, at the end, the positive result comes in place. Most of the people fear to bring out their sorrow. However, I encourage them to step forward to the sorrow after some time.
I wish my paintings of the 'deep sorrow in the eyes' would comfort you when you arrived to the last stage which is the ‘acceptance’. I like to deliver the message by my painting, that the power of growth happens when facing the sorrow with courage.
