The purpose of this study is to search for the comparison of young children's story comprehension and production according to the activity types(thematic fantasy dramatic play, large-group discussion, and reading of picture books) using picture books.
We look at the following questions.
    1. What is the effect of the activity types(thematic fantasy dramatic play, large-group discussion, and reading of picture books) using picture books on the story comprehension of young children?
1-1. Is there any difference in the effect of the activity types using picture books on children's structure comprehension?
1-2. Is there any difference in the effect of the activity types using picture books on children's inferential comprehension?
    2. What is the effect of the activity types(a thematic fantasy dramatic play large-group discussion, reading of picture books) on children's story production?
2-1. Is there any difference in the effect of the activity types using picture books on children's developmental level of imaginary story?
2-2. Is there any difference in the effect of the activity types using picture books on children's components of imaginary story?
2-3. Is there any difference in the effect of the activity types using picture books on children's use of a logical cohesive device of imaginary story which they offer?
The subjects are 90 children at the age of 5 attended an annexed kindergarten in Geyounggi province. The number of members in group of a thematic fantasy dramatic play(group A) is 30, a large-group discussion(group B) is 30, and a reading of picture books(group C) is 30. The groups respectively conducted a thematic fantasy dramatic play, a large-group discussion and a reading of picture books with 14 picture books during 14 weeks.
In the pretest, the average and standard deviation of children's structural and inferential comprehension in terms of their story comprehension, and of a developmental level of story, story components and logical device in terms of a story production were calculated, and then it was analyzed whether there was a difference from the children's story comprehension and production among the respective groups by conducting the one-way analysis of variance on the basis of the scores.
According to the standard for measuring the understanding of the story(Morrow, 1984), we used the tools which a researcher added 2 inferential questions to, Rand(1991) had designed, to match with the story because the number of the questions about the inferential comprehension is lower than that about the structure comprehension. To measure the story comprehension in this study, we used picture books, which are Ezra Jack Keats's 「A Letter to Amy」 (1996) in the pre-test and 「Peter's Chair」(1996) in the post-test.
The level 8 which Lee Yungja and Lee Jihyun(2006) had proposed with reference to Stein's(1998) and Benson's(1996) level was used as the tools for a developmental level of story production, and, based on Hudson and Sahpiro(1991), we used the tools for measuring components of an imaginary story which Lee Yungja and Lee Jihyun(2006) had proposed. Also we used the tools which Lee Yungja and Lee Jihyun(2006) had proposed with reference to Hudson, Shapiro(2006), John-Steiner and Panofsky(1987) as the logical cohesive devices. An inter-rater reliability(Cohen's kappa) of the story comprehension and production is measured for a material analysis.
Duncan test was conducted to identify the difference of the groups in the post-test. After the test, as well as the pretest, analysis of covariance(ANCOVA) which took the score of the pretest as control variables was conducted after calculating the average and standard deviation of the story's structure comprehension and inferential comprehension, a developmental level of a story production, components of a story and a logical cohesive device. The result of the statistical analysis used in this study was tested in the significance level of .05.
It was found in this study that the activity types(thematic fantasy dramatic play, large-group discussion, and reading of picture books) using picture books have a positive effect on young children's story comprehension and production. and the results of this study are as follows.
First, it was found that there is difference with regards to the improvement in structural comprehension of a story in the order of thematic fantasy dramatic play, large-group discussion, and reading of picture books.
Second, it was found that there is difference with regards to the improvement in inferential comprehension of a story in the order of thematic fantasy dramatic play, large-group discussion, and reading of picture books.
Third, it was found that there is difference with regards to the improvement in developmental level of story production in order of thematic fantasy dramatic play, large-group discussion, and reading of picture books.
Fourth, it was found that there is difference with regards to the use of components of story production in the order of thematic fantasy dramatic play, large-group discussion, and reading of picture books.
Fifth, there was difference among the children who took part in the thematic fantasy dramatic play with regards to logical cohesive devices of story production, but there was no difference among the children who discussed in large-group and among the children who read the picture books.
In this study it was found that the large-group activities like a thematic fantasy dramatic play or a large-group discussion which is an activity type using picture books were an effective teaching-learning method for the development of children's story production and comprehension, and especially the thematic fantasy dramatic play was the most effective way.
