취학전 저소득층 다문화가정 아동의 언어능력

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the linguistic characteristics of children from multicultural families, by comparing and analyzing linguistic performance of children from (1) low SES multicultural families, (2) low SES non-multicultural families and (3) middle SES non-multicultural families. Sixty children aged from 3- to 4-years participated and tested with two standardized language tests in the present study. The participants (39 males and 21 females) were divided into three groups: (1) 20 multicultural children from low SES, (2) 20 non-multicultural children from low SES and (3) 20 non-multicultural children from middle SES. Three groups of children were matched by their CA and intelligence scores. To perform a comparative analysis of linguistic abilities among children from the three groups, a one-way ANOVA and Scheffé Post Hoc test were conducted using SPSS/Win 12.0. Results of the present study demonstrated that children from low SES multicultural families performed significantly lower than those from middle SES non-multicultural families in most of linguistic tasks including language comprehension, language expression, vocabulary comprehension, and vocabulary expression. In addition, compared to the low SES non-multicultural group, those children from low SES multicultural families showed significantly lower performance in language expression. These results indicate that the poor language performance of children from multicultural families was due to unique language environmental characteristics of multicultural families besides their SES. Results of the present study suggest careful monitoring of language development of pre-school children from multicultural families, importance of SLP’s role in early screening, diagnosis and early intervention of language disorders, and mother training programs are needed.
