이미지 오버래핑(Image Overlapping) 기법을 활용한 회화에 대한 연구 : 본인 작품<다중적 공간>시리즈를 중심으로 = (A) study on painting by Image Overlapping : Focused on my <Multiplex Space> series

국문 초록 (Abstract)

회화는 화가가 세상을 보는 눈이며 거울이다. 본인은 수많은 이미지가 오버랩(overlap)되는 화면 구성을 통해 하나에 만족하지 않는 인간의 욕망과 그것을 한 화면에 담고자 하는 애착을 작품 속에 드러내었다.
과학기술의 발달로 우리는 실제로도 무엇이 실상이고 무엇이 가상인지 알 수 없는 세상에 살게 되었다. 하루에도 수많은 장면을 보고 포착하는 과정 속에서, 시간의 흐름과 기억의 차이를 회화로 담으려는 노력이 계속되어 왔다. 디지털 카메라로 찍은 사진은 누구나 이미지를 인위적으로 조작 할 수 있고, 색을 다양하게 조정할 수 있는 이미지 생산의 핵심적인 혁명으로 평가받게 되었다.
우리는 과학기술로 완벽하게 인공적인 시뮬레이션(simulation)을 창조할 수 있게 되었다. 따라서 노동 집약적인 회화가 설 자리를 잃어간다는 우려의 목소리도 크다. 하지만 본인은 이러한 과학기술의 방식을 이용하여 회화로 재현함으로써 색다른 회화의 가능성을 제시하고 있다.
이미지 오버래핑(image overlapping) 기법을 활용한 본인의 회화는 점차 다문화의 혼성과 혼란 속에서 정체성과 진정한 의미를 되짚어보는 기회를 제공한다. 흑과 백 또는 이분법의 조건으로 사는 우리의 현실은 빠르게 변하는 세계 속에서 불리할 수밖에 없다. 지금의 세상은 여러 문화가 공존하고 융합하며 서로의 벽을 끊임없이 허물고 있다. 정보를 ‘수집’하던 시대에서 지식을 ‘편집’하는 시대로 변하고 있는 것이다. 끝도 없이 쏟아지는 단편적인 정보와 견해들을 가려낼 줄 아는 과학적 비판력, 전체를 통찰하고 자신의 주장으로 엮어낼 수 있는 편집력이야 말로 지금의 시대를 이해하는 작은 출발점이 된다. 본인은 혼합되어 가는 문화와 정체성을 바로 잡고 이를 서로의 것으로 인정하며 확실한 개성을 섞어 적절히 융합하는 방법으로 회화를 이해하고자 하였다. 기법 적으로 오버랩 시켜 중첩되는 이미지 속에 문화는 기존의 국경을 넘어 다종다양한 생각들을 융합해내는 창조적 잡종의 힘, 새로운 융합지식의 계기를 마련하고자 시도하였다.
본 논문은 본인의 이미지 오버래핑(image overlapping) 작품의 형성배경으로 작품 제작 동기와 경험, 작품 발상과 전개과정을 세밀히 연구하였다. 또한 이미지 오버래핑을 회화에 활용된 창시자로 데이비드 살르와 본인과 비슷한 다중 방식의 작업을 한 김아타의 작품을 알아보고, 본인의 작품과의 유사점과 차이점을 분석하였다. 혼성과 다중성으로 여러 의미가 작품 속에서 어떻게 표현되며, 본인이 실현하고자 한 유토피아(utopia)와 디스토피아(dystopia)의 모습을 이미지 오버래핑으로 어떻게 구현하였는지 알아보았다. 끝으로 작품에서 포토샵 방법이 어떠한 영향을 주어 작품이 탄생했는지 그 과정을 살펴보았다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Paintings are eyes and a mirror through which an artist sees the world. The author reveals human desires not satisfied with one and the attachment trying to contain them in one screen through screen formation that numerous images are overlapped.
Due to the development of science and technology, we came to live in the world where we are not able to tell the difference between the reality and virtuality. In the process of seeing and capturing numerous scenes a day, the efforts to contain the passage of time and differences of memories in paintings have been continued. Pictures taken with a digital camera were evaluated as the core revolution of image production that anyone can paste images and adjust their colors freely.
We were able to create artificial simulation perfectly with science and technology. Therefore, there are a lot of voices of concern that the possibility of labor-intensive paintings is losing their footing. However, by expressing paintings with such science and technology, the author presents the possibility of different paintings.
Printings using the image overlapping technique will be an opportunity to look back on the meaning of true culture and identity in increasingly multi-cultural mixing and confusion. Our reality living with the condition of black and white or dichotomy is bound to be disadvantageous in the rapidly changing world. In the present world, several cultures co-exist and merge, constantly breaking down each other's walls. The era when information is ‘collected’ is being changed into the era when knowledge is ‘edited.’ The scientific critical ability to know how to sort out endlessly pouring fragmentary information and opinions and editing ability to see through the whole and edit it into their claims become the starting point to understand the present times. The author tries to correct mixed cultures and identities and understand paintings in a manner of mixing each other’s certain personalities and properly uniting them. The hybrid culture using the image overlapping technique tries to provide an opportunity for the new convergence of knowledge, the power of creative hybrid combining a great variety of ideas beyond the existing borders.
This paper elaborately studies work production motives and experiences as the author’s work formation background, work idea and development process. Also, it examines the works of Atta Kim who worked in the multi-way similar to that of the author and David Salle, the founder who used image overlapping in paintings and analyzes the similarities and differences from the author’s works. And it finds out how several meanings are expressed in works by mixing and multiplicity and how dystopia and utopia that the author tried to realize were implemented with image overlapping. Finally, the process on how the works were born is examined by which impact of the Photoshop method on works.
