Vol.11 No.1

Jung saw religious experiences as the most important human factor and introduced us to the psychological and ontological values of these religious experiences. Jung s profound psychological insights helped religious people take a new perspective on their religious life. This paper focuses on Jung s interest in various religious areas, including understanding of Christianity, the relationship between Christianity and shadow, and the relationship between psychotherapy and religious sanctification. Among the many psychotherapeutic approaches that Jung Psychology utilizes, sand play therapy has been developed based on a deep understanding of the collective unconsciousness and ego conscious development process. Through clinical case study, this researcher analyzed on how sand play therapy affected the client s religious maturation process. As a result, it helps us to experience the symbolically expressed self and to integrate unfulfilled areas, which contributes to the sanctification process and provides insights for us to see life in abundance and depth.

Vol.11 No.2

This study aimed to heal the experience of attachment trauma and promote the self-development and growth of children through sandplay therapy. We conducted 17 sessions over 6 months with a school-age child, and we include 17 sand photos from these sessions. This child had not separated from the mother because of unstable attachment, which delayed their self-development towards autonomy and independence. The child could not express their feelings and intentions voluntarily and had a strong tendency to depend on the mother, which limited the experience of positive communication with other children at school. In improving self-relationships along with self-development while playing with sand, the child improved their ability to form intimate relationships. Through the experience of the relationship with the therapist, the child resolved and adapted to the conflict in their social environment while maintaining stable emotions. As a result, the child showed positive changes in their ability to accept themselves and others, developed emotional regulation, and improved school adaptation.

Vol.6 No.2

For this study the researcher conducted sandplay therapy with a client who exhibited passiveaggressive behavior due to his difficulty in emotional regulation. After a total of 34 sessions, the client was better able to regulate and express emotions and his mother developed efficacy in her parenting. His mother had experienced severe anger and depression when she was pregnant with the client. The mother’s depression lasted after childbirth. She did not seem emotionally interactive with the client and only provided basic care for him. The theme of the client’s sandplay mainly dealt with his mother’s anger. Sandplay therapy initially proceeded very slowly, in a passive client’s pattern. As the sandplay therapy progressed, the client’s self and ego became stronger at dealing with anger issues related to his mother. His emotional problems were able to be adjusted.

Vol.12 No.1

This study investigated the process leading to individuation by examining the symbolism of rocks that emerged from sandplay therapy for a middle-aged woman from the perspective of analytical psychology and alchemy. The rock symbolizes an unchangeable life force, nurturing, recovery, source of living water, grave, and place in contact with spiritual energy. The alchemical process of creating new substances using existing substances proceeds in the order of calcification, dissolution, solidification, sublimation, decay, separation, and unity. In this study, the client expressed her unconscious through the rocks in the sand tray, which corresponded to the calcification of alchemy. Afterwards, the client expressed feelings such as despair and sadness that existed deeply within her, which were linked to the process of dissolution and coagulation of alchemy. Finally, the client could proceed with the process of individuation through self-integration with her shadow by accepting the suppression and wounds of her heart that were suppressed for a long time in consciousness, which is connected with the process of sublimation, corruption, separation, and unity in alchemy. The process of individuation involves completing the true Self by integrating the Self that exists inside the individual. We can integrate these processes through a confrontational dialogue between consciousness and the unconscious through symbols.

Vol.5 No.2

There is a unique type of gate that is found on Jeju Island callled Jeongnang. A traditional stone or wooden structure, it has a diverse range of symbolic meanings for the islanders as evidenced in the sand-pictures they create. For these people, the rich symbolism of the Jeongnang gate encompasses boundary, protection, consideration, disconnection, attachment, feeling of lack, and harmony. From long time ago, Jeju people made holes ranging from one to five through a wooden pillar (Jeongjumok) or a stone pillar (Jeongjuseok) and transversely placed wooden logs (Jeongnang) into the pillar. This is the unique gate of Jeju called Jeongnang. By placing the bars up or down, the owner indicated whether there was a person or not and also that the owner would come back soon, somewhat late, or very late. This study examined the characteristics of Jeongnang and explored its symbolic meanings. To this end, as a method to explore the characteristics of Jeongnang, this study selected a literature review and at the same time interpreted the symbolic meanings of Jeongnang used in sandplay therapies of Jeju people according to Dora Kalff’s theory and technique of sandplay therapy based on Jung’s analytical psychological theory. It was found that Jeongnang had symbolic meanings of boundary, protection, consideration, disconnection, lingering attachment, feeling of lack, and harmony.

Vol.14 No.2

This study investigated the perception of Sandplay therapy among graduate students majoring in counseling using the Q methodology. Initially, 31 statements were extracted through literature research, and in-depth interviews were conducted with five graduate students majoring in counseling, resulting in 40 Q-samples. Subsequently, 28 graduate students majoring in counseling were selected as P samples, and Q classification was performed on them. The collected data were analyzed using the PC-QUANL program, leading to the identification of four types: “familiar positive inquiry type” (Type 1), “unfamiliar neutral avoidance type” (Type 2), “unfamiliar neutral inquiry type” (Type 3), and “familiar neutral inquiry type” (Type 4). Type 1 participants were attracted to Sandplay therapy, demonstrating a familiar and positive attitude and expressing a willingness to learn more about it. In contrast, Type 2 participants perceived no significant difference between Sandplay therapy and other counseling techniques. Type 3 participants were unfamiliar with Sandplay therapy and lacked knowledge about its characteristics and advantages compared to other counseling techniques. Type 4 participants, although familiar with Sandplay therapy, also lacked awareness of its specific characteristics and advantages. The study’s findings are expected to serve as fundamental data for the future improvement and development of Sandplay therapy training for graduate students majoring in counseling. By shedding light on the various perceptions among students, this research can contribute to enhancing Sandplay therapy education and practice within counseling programs.

Vol.14 No.3

In this study, we aimed to develop a countertransference scale based on the therapist-client relationship model in Sandplay Therapy. Additionally, we sought to validate the developed scale by examining its relationship with therapeutic alliance and the therapeutic relationship. Sandplay Therapy practitioners participated in data collection. The collected data were analyzed by calculating frequencies and percentages, conducting factor analysis, reliability testing, and correlation analysis. As a result, the countetransference scale comprised 30 items organized into five subfactors: ‘Mother-Child,’ ‘Power,’ ‘Scenery,’ ‘Shamanism,’ and ‘Wounded Healer.’ The validation of construct validity revealed significant positive correlations between the entire countertransference scale and the entire therapeutic alliance scale, as well as between the entire countertransference scale and the entire therapeutic relationship scale. The analysis revealed significant positive correlations between the overall reverse transfer scale and the alliance scale, as well as significant positive correlations between the overall reverse transfer scale and the therapeutic relationship scale.

Vol.14 No.1

This study investigated inter-right brain synchrony between therapist and client in Sandplay therapy, using hyperscanning technique based on functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). fNIRS is a non-intrusive method that measures changes in oxyhemoglobin the cerebral blood. A total of seven therapist-client pairs-i.e., 14 participants-wore fNIRS devices on their heads and engaged in two sessions of Sandplay therapy, with each session lasting for 30 minutes. The study observed synchronization in the right and left prefrontal cortices of both therapists and clients in all seven pairs, during every session. Interestingly enough, synchronization occurred not only while the pairs engaged in verbal communication about the completed sandpicture but also during the non-verbal process of clients' creating sandpictures. The outcome of the study hence suggests neurobiological fundamentals for the therapeutic relationship between therapist and client, which is also called the therapeutic resonance, relational mutual regression, therapeutic alliance, and mother-child unity.

Vol.12 No.2

In this paper, the symbolic meaning of the pandemic and the role of the sandplay therapist in integration of psyche and matter were attempted to be understood from an analytical psychology perspective. Traditionally, in Korean culture, when an epidemic spreads, mask dance plays such as Byeolshin Tal Chum Gut Nori which means shamanistic mask dance play and rituals were offered to appease the gods who brought the epidemic, leaving minimal damage and waiting for the god to pass. In that sense, the expression ‘byeolshin’ refers to both a god and a contagious disease called smallpox. The use of mask, tal in these shamanistic mask dance plays and rituals are related to the meaning of ‘mask’. Mask in Korean means mask, but it is also a word that means diseases, problems, breakdowns, shortcomings, difficulties, etc. Also, playing is an interesting part, which means that play has a healing effect and is a way to appease the archetypal fears and anxieties caused by the divine plague. Just as our traditional culture did, in the era of the corona pandemic (mask, mask), sandplay therapists are in a time and situational position to play a role in making clients realize that matter and psyche or spirit, that is, external things are internal projections. This is because sandplay therapy is a play and a ritual, and it is a symbolic and healing approach that allows each person to meet their inner ‘god’, that is, their true Self. This process must occur first in the therapist, and only the therapist who has experienced such a process can understand the client s process in terms of the archetypal transference-countertransference relationship. Also, it was tried to explain the archetypal fear of the pandemic by linking it with the personal complex, and the symbol of the pandemic that appears in sandplay therapy was presented along with the symbols of earthquake disaster in Nepal.
