• Expression of Root-Related Transcription Factors Associated with Flooding Tolerance of Soybean ( Glycine max )

        Valliyodan, Babu,Van Toai, Tara T.,Alves, Jose Donizeti,de ,tima P. Goulart, Patricia,Lee, Jeong Dong,Fritschi, Felix B.,Rahman, Mohammed Atiqur,Islam, Rafiq,Shannon, J. Grover,Nguyen, Henry T MDPI 2014 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MOLECULAR SCIENCES Vol.15 No.10

Much research has been conducted on the changes in gene expression of the model plant Arabidopsis to low-oxygen stress. Flooding results in a low oxygen environment in the root zone. However, there is ample evidence that tolerance to soil flooding is more than tolerance to low oxygen alone. In this study, we investigated the physiological response and differential expression of root-related transcription factors (TFs) associated with the tolerance of soybean plants to soil flooding. Differential responses of PI408105A and S99-2281 plants to ten days of soil flooding were evaluated at physiological, morphological and anatomical levels. Gene expression underlying the tolerance response was investigated using qRT-PCR of root-related TFs, known anaerobic genes, and housekeeping genes. Biomass of flood-sensitive S99-2281 roots remained unchanged during the entire 10 days of flooding. Flood-tolerant PI408105A plants exhibited recovery of root growth after 3 days of flooding. Flooding induced the development of aerenchyma and adventitious roots more rapidly in the flood-tolerant than the flood-sensitive genotype. Roots of tolerant plants also contained more ATP than roots of sensitive plants at the 7th and 10th days of flooding. Quantitative transcript analysis identified 132 genes differentially expressed between the two genotypes at one or more time points of flooding. Expression of genes related to the ethylene biosynthesis pathway and formation of adventitious roots was induced earlier and to higher levels in roots of the flood-tolerant genotype. Three potential flood-tolerance TFs which were differentially expressed between the two genotypes during the entire 10-day flooding duration were identified. This study confirmed the expression of anaerobic genes in response to soil flooding. Additionally, the differential expression of TFs associated with soil flooding tolerance was not qualitative but quantitative and temporal. Functional analyses of these genes will be necessary to reveal their potential to enhance flooding tolerance of soybean cultivars.

      • Development of the ASHRAE Global Thermal Comfort Database II

        Fö,ldv&aacute,ry Lič,ina, Veronika,Cheung, Toby,Zhang, Hui,de Dear, Richard,Parkinson, Thomas,Arens, Edward,Chun, Chungyoon,Schiavon, Stefano,Luo, Maohui,Brager, Gail,Li, Peixian,Kaam, Soazig Elsevier 2018 Building and environment Vol.142 No.-

Abstract

Recognizing the value of open-source research databases in advancing the art and science of HVAC, in 2014 the ASHRAE Global Thermal Comfort Database II project was launched under the leadership of University of California at Berkeley's Center for the Built Environment and The University of Sydney's Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) Laboratory. The exercise began with a systematic collection and harmonization of raw data from the last two decades of thermal comfort field studies around the world. The ASHRAE Global Thermal Comfort Database II (Comfort Database), now an online, open-source database, includes approximately 81,846 complete sets of objective indoor climatic observations with accompanying “right-here-right-now” subjective evaluations by the building occupants who were exposed to them. The database is intended to support diverse inquiries about thermal comfort in field settings. A simple web-based interface to the database enables filtering on multiple criteria, including building typology, occupancy type, subjects' demographic variables, subjective thermal comfort states, indoor thermal environmental criteria, calculated comfort indices, environmental control criteria and outdoor meteorological information. Furthermore, a web-based interactive thermal comfort visualization tool has been developed that allows end-users to quickly and interactively explore the data.

Highlights

The scope, development, contents, and accessibility of the Comfort Database is documented.

The Comfort Database II includes approximately 76,000 complete sets of thermal comfort data.

The Comfort Database provides access to the collected raw data.

Web-based interactive visualization tool was developed that allows end-users to interactively explore the data.

      • THE TAOS PROJECT: RESULTS FROM SEVEN YEARS OF SURVEY DATA

        Zhang, Z.-W.,Lehner, M. J.,Wang, J.-H.,Wen, C.-Y.,Wang, S.-Y.,King, S.-K.,Granados, &Aacute,. P.,Alcock, C.,Axelrod, T.,Bianco, F. B.,Byun, Y.-I.,Chen, W. P.,Coehlo, N. K.,Cook, K. H.,de Pater, I.,Kim American Institute of Physics 2013 The Astronomical journal Vol.146 No.1

The Taiwanese-American Occultation Survey (TAOS) aims to detect serendipitous occultations of stars by small (~1 km diameter) objects in the Kuiper Belt and beyond. Such events are very rare (<10–3 events per star per year) and short in duration (~200 ms), so many stars must be monitored at a high readout cadence. TAOS monitors typically ~500 stars simultaneously at a 5 Hz readout cadence with four telescopes located at Lulin Observatory in central Taiwan. In this paper, we report the results of the search for small Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs) in seven years of data. No occultation events were found, resulting in a 95% c.l. upper limit on the slope of the faint end of the KBO size distribution of q = 3.34-3.82, depending on the surface density at the break in the size distribution at a diameter of about 90 km.

Modelling of marine radionuclide dispersion in IAEA MODARIA program: Lessons learnt from the Baltic Sea and Fukushima scenarios

        Peri&aacute,ñ,ez, R.,Bezhenar, R.,Brovchenko, I.,Duffa, C.,Iosjpe, M.,Jung, K.T.,Kobayashi, T.,Lamego, F.,Maderich, V.,Min, B.I.,Nies, H.,Osvath, I.,Outola, I.,Psaltaki, M.,Suh, K.S.,de With, G. Elsevier 2016 Science of the Total Environment Vol.569 No.-

Abstract

State-of-the art dispersion models were applied to simulate 137Cs dispersion from Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster fallout in the Baltic Sea and from Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant releases in the Pacific Ocean after the 2011 tsunami. Models were of different nature, from box to full three-dimensional models, and included water/sediment interactions. Agreement between models was very good in the Baltic. In the case of Fukushima, results from models could be considered to be in acceptable agreement only after a model harmonization process consisting of using exactly the same forcing (water circulation and parameters) in all models. It was found that the dynamics of the considered system (magnitude and variability of currents) was essential in obtaining a good agreement between models. The difficulties in developing operative models for decision-making support in these dynamic environments were highlighted. Three stages which should be considered after an emergency, each of them requiring specific modelling approaches, have been defined. They are the emergency, the post-emergency and the long-term phases.

Highlights

Models applied to simulate 137Cs marine dispersion after nuclear accidents.

Not good agreement initially found in highly dynamic environments.

Difficulties in developing models for decision making after emergencies highlighted.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

A Novel High Performance Architecture for H.264/AVC Deblocking Filtering

        Sebastián López,Felix Tobajas,Gustavo M. Callicó,Pedro A. Perez,Valentin de Armas,Jose F. López,Roberto Sarmiento 한국전자통신연구원 2007 ETRI Journal Vol.29 No.3

This letter presents an architecture based on a new double-filter strategy to perform the adaptive in-loop filtering process specified by the H.264/AVC standard. The proposed architecture shows considerable advantages, both in terms of hardware cost and latency, when compared with the approaches found in the most recent literature.
