Promoting Police Job Satisfaction through Work Design: A Case Study on Korean Community Policing
( Yumin R. Wang ),( Koung Mi Huh ) 한국정책학회 2014 International Journal of Policy Studies Vol.5 No.2
This study explored the feasibility of conducting work design to promote officer job satisfaction in police organizations. Korean community policing, a police job enrichment agenda, was targeted. The relationship between work design and officer job satisfaction was analyzed. Data were collected by utilizing the questionnaire developed on the basis of the Job Diagnostic Survey. Judgment sampling was performed, and a total of fifty-four community policing officers serving at fifteen substations of three precincts in a city near the state capital were surveyed. Findings indicate that enriching the jobs of officers through work design suffices to promote job satisfaction. The five core work characteristics that are built into the job independently as well as jointly motivate officers of various growth need strength. The three psychological states emerged from the cognitive process that officers went through taking on the task positively lead to job satisfaction. The expectation of experiencing growth at work and the perception of the motivating potential of task do not interact to influence officers’ satisfaction with the job. It appears that Korean community policing is a work design motivating to all jobholders. This study provides theoretical, methodological and policy implications for subsequent research in police job satisfaction.
Cultural Change, Female Marriage Rates, and the Fertility of Taiwan
Vol.27 No.2
Taiwan has been suffering from low marriage rates and fertility since the country experienced political democratization that led to cultural change over the past two decades. This study examines how the evolved culture influences the female marriage rates and birthrates of the country. Variables bearing cultural notions and characteristics are conceptualized and operationalized. Data of aggregate level collected from official sources from 1988 to 2010 were analyzed. Single regression method was employed to perform preliminary examination, and multivariate analysis technique was utilized to perform theoretical elaboration. Findings indicate that the two sets of predictors are causally associated with the two dependent variables in distinguishable manners. Cultural transformation and the resulting change of attitudes toward marriage and childrearing lead to the decrease in female marriage rates as well as birthrates. Encouraging more women to get married efficiently promotes fertility. Policies purporting to fulfill the goal and directions for subsequent research are suggested.

This research examined the extent to which Durhkeim’s theory can be pertinently applied in studying anomies in three Confucian societies, namely, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Korea. Cultural chaos—the extent to which Confucianism is fading away in the three targeted societies is hypothesized as an intervening variable in the causality that composes of political and economic causes and social deviance effect. The three data sets of aggregate level were collected from official sources online, which cover the period when the three societies experienced political and economic changes. Findings indicate that Korea is the only country among the three that has wholly retained the traditional culture. In Korean society, Confucian norms and value system have functioned to moderate the impact on crime that resulted from economic and political change. In the case of Taiwanese, however, crime rate tends not to have been influenced by how citizens are committed to the culture because it no longer exists. In Hong Kong, similarly, the moderating role the Confucian culture has played in the hypothesized causality was found insignificant. It is predicted that the Korean culture will continue to sustain stability and lead the developed country in its quest for future prosperity

Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) copolymers of different molecular weights were synthesized by a suspension polymerization and precipitation polymerization method. The rheology behaviors of the synthesized PAN copolymers were investigated in relation to their molecular weight, solid content and melting temperature. The influence of "historical effects" on the spinning solution of PAN was studied by analyzing the laws of viscosity considering the diversification time and temperature. The viscosity disciplines of each spinning solution conformed well to the rheological universal laws in a comparison of the suspension polymerization product with that of precipitation polymerization. Viscosity changes in the swelling process of dissolution were gentler in the suspension polymerization product; a small amount of water will quickly debase the solution viscosity, and high-speed mixing can greatly shorten the time required by the spinning solution to reach the final viscosity.
