COLLISION AVOIDANCE OF LOW SPEED AUTONOMOUS SHUTTLES WITH PEDESTRIANS

Sukru Yaren Gelbal,Bilin Aksun-Guvenc,Levent Guvenc 한국자동차공학회 2020 International journal of automotive technology Vol.21 No.4

This paper is on a pedestrian collision avoidance system for low speed autonomous shuttles based on Vehicle-to-Pedestrian (V2P) communication. When pedestrians cannot be detected using line-of-sight sensors like camera, radar and LIDAR, V2P communication with the Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) enabled pedestrian smartphone is used to detect and localize them through the in-vehicle DSRC radio used for Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication. The vehicle, then, either stops or, if possible, goes around the pedestrian in a socially acceptable manner using the elastic band method for locally modifying the vehicle trajectory in real time. The elastic band method of collision avoidance is modified for fast real time execution in this paper. Along with model-in-the-loop simulations, a hardware-in-the-loop simulator using an automated driving vehicle model in the high fidelity vehicle dynamics simulation program Carsim Real Time with Sensors and Traffic with two DSRC modems emulating the vehicle and pedestrian communications is introduced and used in this paper as a prerequisite to real world experiments. Both stationary and moving pedestrians are considered in the model and hardware-in-the-loop simulations. Two real world experiments are also presented to demonstrate the V2P based avoidance of crashes between low speed autonomous shuttles and pedestrians.

        Dermoscopic Evolution of Pediatric Nevi

( Fatma Pelin Cengiz ),( Yaren Yelmaz ),( Nazan Emiroglu ),( Nahide Onsun ) 대한피부과학회 2019 Annals of Dermatology Vol.31 No.5

Background: The incidence of pediatric melanoma is very rare. Dermoscopic features help to distinguish pediatric melanoma and common nevi. Objective: To study the evolution of dermoscopic findings in benign nevi in childhood through serial observation and photography. Methods: We examined 504 melanocytic lesions in 100 patients. From each participant, dermoscopic images of the nevi from 4-year dermoscopic follow-up were obtained, including randomly selected nevi. Results: The most common dermoscopic patterns were homogeneous (193 nevi; 38.3%), globular (92 nevi; 18.3%), and reticular (86 nevi; 17.1%). Dermoscopic pattern changes were detected in 27% of patients aged 2∼10 years and in 20% of patients aged 11∼16 years. The main pattern changes consisted of the transition from homogeneous to globular-homogeneous (16%), from homogeneous to reticular-homogeneous (12%) and from globular to globular- homogeneous (10%). Although 257 of the 504 nevi (51.0%) have stable duration without size changes, 169 of the 504 nevi (33.5%) were enlarged, and 78 of the 504 nevi (15.5%) had become smaller. Conclusion: These results contrast with the prevailing view that dermoscopic patterns in pediatric nevi are usually characterized by globular patterns and that melanocytic nevi generally undergo a characteristic transition from a globular pattern to a reticular pattern. Fifty one percent of patients did not exhibit a size change. While 33% of patients had symmetrical enlargement, 15% of patients had involution. Therefore, enlargement is a common dermoscopic change in pediatric nevi, and is not a specific sign of pediatric melanoma. (Ann Dermatol 31(5) 518∼524, 2019)

      • Evaluation of Quality of Life of Breast Cancer Patient Next-of-kin in Turkey

Ogce, Filiz,Ozkan, Sevgi,Okcin, Figen,Yaren, Arzu,Demiray, Gokcen Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.5

Introduction: Quality of life (QoL) issues are of importance in relatives of women with breast cancer (BC)as caregivers in neglecting their own needs due to care of a patient and also as women regarding the potential risk of themselves developing BC. The objectives in the present study were to compare the QoL of female relatives of women in treatment for breast cancer. To date, no study had examined multi-dimensional QoL in accompanying people as compared them into two groups of female relatives whose first degree and second degree. Methods: QoL of female relatives was assessed using the Quality of Life-Family Version (QOL-FV) scale. Relationships between socio-demographic characteristics and QoL scores were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis and Crosstabs tests. Results: The mean age of the female relatives was 37.6 years, and nearly 48% had a university education. It was found that first degree relatives had worse QoL in all domains except physical wellbeing than second degree relatives. Conclusion: This study showed that being female relatives of BC, especially first-degree, affect QoL negatively. Health care providers are of an important role in the stage of information related to genetic influence of BC.

Neutrophil to Lymphocyte Ratio and Serum Biomarkers : A Potential Tool for Prediction of Clinically Relevant Cerebral Vasospasm after Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

        Osman Kula,Burak Gunay,Merve Yaren Kayabas,Yener Akturk,Ezgi Kula,Banu Tutunculer,Necdet Sut,Serdar Solak 대한신경외과학회 2023 Journal of Korean neurosurgical society Vol.66 No.6

Objective : Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a condition characterized by bleeding in the subarachnoid space, often resulting from the rupture of a cerebral aneurysm. Delayed cerebral ischemia caused by vasospasm is a significant cause of mortality and morbidity in SAH patients, and inflammatory markers such as systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI), systemic inflammatory index (SII), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and derived NLR (dNLR) have shown potential in predicting clinical vasospasm and outcomes in SAH patients. This article aims to investigate the relationship between inflammatory markers and cerebral vasospasm after aneurysmatic SAH (aSAH) and evaluate the predictive value of various indices, including SIRI, SII, NLR, and dNLR, in predicting clinical vasospasm. Methods : A retrospective analysis was performed on a cohort of 96 patients who met the inclusion criteria out of a total of 139 patients admitted Trakya University Hospital with a confirmed diagnosis of aSAH between January 2013 and December 2021. Diagnostic procedures, neurological examinations, and laboratory tests were performed to assess the patients' condition. The Student’s t-test compared age variables, while the chi-square test compared categorical variables between the non-vasospasm (NVS) and vasospasm (VS) groups. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses were used to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of laboratory parameters, calculating the area under the ROC curve, cut-off values, sensitivity, and specificity. A significance level of p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results : The study included 96 patients divided into two groups : NVS and VS. Various laboratory parameters, such as NLR, SII, and dNLR, were measured daily for 15 days, and statistically significant differences were found in NLR on 7 days, with specific cut-off values identified for each day. SII showed a significant difference on day 9, while dNLR had significant differences on days 2, 4, and 9. Graphs depicting the values of these markers for each day are provided. Conclusion : Neuroinflammatory biomarkers, when used alongside radiology and scoring scales, can aid in predicting prognosis, determining severity and treatment decisions for aSAH, and further studies with larger patient groups are needed to gain more insights.

Optimization Design of the Decentralized Multi-Vehicle Cooperative Controller for Freeway Ramp Entrance

        Wang Jiawei,Ma Fangwu,Yu Yang,Zhu Sheng,Gelbal Sukru Yaren,Aksun-Guvenc Bilin,Guvenc Levent 한국자동차공학회 2021 International journal of automotive technology Vol.22 No.3

This research presents a multi-vehicle control strategy combining the merging control and platoon control to deal with the merging scenario in the freeway ramp entrance. In the merging controller, a selection algorithm is presented firstly to determine the merging sequence based on the initial states of the vehicles in the cooperative area. Subsequently, the optimized longitudinal trajectory of the facilitating vehicle and on-ramp vehicle is addressed by solving the Hamiltonian function. As for the platoon controller, string stability is analyzed to attenuate the impact of merging on the mainline traffic, considering the influence of communication time delay. Smooth mode switching is achieved by introducing the tracking policy of platoon controller to determine the terminal states of the facilitating vehicle. The proposed strategy is simulated at two typical merging scenarios, where two on-ramp vehicles attempt to cut into a six-vehicular platoon, to validate its feasibility and advantage.
