Cu0.7Mn0.3O films were deposited by Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition and annealed in different atmospheres. The XRD diffraction results indicate that samples annealed in air and N2 both show pure CuO phases, while the film annealed in O2 has a secondary phase CuMn2O4. The content of Mn was confirmed by Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The M-T and M-H curves show that the average magnetic moment of the films prepared in O2 is larger than those prepared in air and in N2 atmosphere. Ferromagnetic segments Mn-O-Cu-O-Mn can be used to understand the ferromagnetism of CuO under heavily Mn-doping. And the magnetic moment per Mn ions calculated on the base of this chain model is consistent with the experimental result.

Ag+-implanted pyrolytic carbon and TiN/Ag multilayer films were prepared by ion implantation and ion beam assisted deposition. L-929 cells (mice fibroblast) were cultured in the extracted medium of Ag+-implanted pyrolytic carbon and TiN/Ag multilayer film samples for cytotoxicity testing. The adhesion, spreading, proliferation and morphology of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) on both samples were also investigated. The results show that the cytotoxicity grade of Ag+-implanted pyrolytic carbon is less than 1˚ when the implanted dose is under 1×10 16 ions/cm² and the cytotoxicity grade of TiN/Ag multilayer films with modulation period of 7.5 nm is within the range of 0 to 1˚ indicating that both samples have no cytotoxicity to L-929. HUVEC on both Ag+-implanted pyrolytic carbon and TiN/Ag multilayer film sample grows well, showing that they have good biocompatibility. Eupatilin, a pharmacologically active flavone derived from the Artemisia plant species, has been reported to have anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and anti-tumor activities. In the present study, we investigated whether eupatilin exhibits neuroprotective activities against ischemia/reperfusion-induced delayed neuronal injury in mice. Transient global cerebral ischemia was induced in mice by bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO) for 15min followed by reperfusion for 4 days. Eupatilin (1, 3, or 10mg/kg, p.o.) was administered immediately after the reperfusion. Histochemical studies showed that eupatilin (10mg/kg) increased the number of viable cells detected by Nissl staining and decreased the number of degenerating neuronal cells detected by Fluoro-Jade B staining in the hippocampal CA1 region. Western blotting indicated that eupatilin further increased the level of Akt phosphorylation at 8h after BCCAO. Furthermore, wortmannin, a phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase inhibitor, attenuated the eupatilin-induced increase of Akt phosphorylation. In addition, wortmannin completely reversed the eupatilin-induced neuroprotective effects observed at 4 days after reperfusion. These findings suggest that eupatilin is a promising therapeutic agent against global cerebral ischemia-induced neuronal damage and that its neuroprotective effects may be mediated in part by increased Akt phosphorylation.

<P>In the hierarchical model of structure formation, giant elliptical galaxies form through merging processes within the highest density peaks known as protoclusters. While high-redshift radio galaxies usually pinpoint the location of these environments, we have recently discovered at <I>z</I> ∼ 2−3 three enormous (> 200 kpc) Lyman-<I>α</I> nebulae (ELANe) that host multiple active galactic nuclei (AGN) and that are surrounded by overdensities of Lyman-<I>α</I> emitters (LAE). These regions are prime candidates for massive protoclusters in the early stages of assembly. To characterize the star-forming activity within these rare structures - both on ELAN and protocluster scales - we have initiated an observational campaign with the <I>James Clerk Maxwell</I> Telescope (JCMT) and the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX) telescopes. In this paper we report on sensitive SCUBA-2/JCMT 850 and 450 <I>μ</I>m observations of a ∼128 arcmin2 field comprising the ELAN MAMMOTH-1, together with the peak of the hosting BOSS1441 LAE overdensity at <I>z</I> = 2.32. These observations unveil 4.0 ± 1.3 times higher source counts at 850 <I>μ</I>m with respect to blank fields, likely confirming the presence of an overdensity also in obscured tracers. We find a strong detection at 850 <I>μ</I>m associated with the continuum source embedded within the ELAN MAMMOTH-1, which - together with the available data from the literature - allow us to constrain the spectral energy distribution of this source to be of an ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) with a far-infrared luminosity of LFIRSF = 2.4−2.1+7.4×1012<I>L</I>⊙, and hosting an obscured AGN. Such a source is thus able to power a hard photoionization plus outflow scenario to explain the extended Lyman-<I>α</I>, He II<I>λ</I>1640, and C IV<I>λ</I>1549 emission, and their kinematics. In addition, the two brightest detections at 850 <I>μ</I>m (<I>f</I>850 > 18 mJy) sit at the density peak of the LAEs’ overdensity, likely pinpointing the core of the protocluster. Future multiwavelength and spectroscopic datasets targeting the full extent of the BOSS1441 overdensity have the potential to firmly characterize a cosmic nursery of giant elliptical galaxies, and ultimately of a massive cluster.</P>

Leakage permeance of a permanent magnet (PM) is an important factor for improving the accuracy of electromagnetic device calculations based on a magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC). For PM leakage permeance calculations, the traditional simulation method of finite element analysis (FEA) and the lumped parameter analytical method (LPAM) have been considered; it was found that FEA has the disadvantage of a long calculation time and LPAM has low accuracy. The magnetic field lines distribution analytical method (MFLD) is proposed in this paper in order to raise computational efficiency and keep accuracy within a certain range. The electromagnetic features of open circuit fan-shaped PMs are presented by MFLD and finite element analysis (FEA) is adopted to match the MFLD results. In order to verify the validity of the proposed method in a magnetic system, the working points of PMs in an electromagnetic actuator are calculated, and the numerical results compared with the experimental results.
