Fruit rot is the principal phytopathological problem of pipiana pumpkin (Cucurbita argyrosperma Huber) in the state of Guerrero. The aims of this research were to 1) identify the causal agent of southern blight on pumpkin fruits by morphological, pathogenic, and molecular analysis (ITS1, 5.8S, ITS2); 2) evaluate in vitro Trichoderma spp. strains and chemical fungicides; and 3) evaluate under rainfed field conditions, the strains that obtained the best results in vitro, combined with fungicides during two crop cycles. Number of commercial and non-commercial fruits at harvest, and seed yield (kg ha-1) were registered. Morphological, pathogenic and molecular characterization identified Sclerotium rolfsii as the causal agent of rot in pipiana pumpkin fruits. Now, in vitro conditions, the highest inhibition of S. rolfsii were obtained by Trichoderma virens strain G-41 (70.72%), T. asperellum strain CSAEGro-1 (69%), and the fungicides metalaxyl (100%), pyraclostrobin (100%), quintozene (100%), cyprodinil + fludioxonil (100%), and prochloraz (100%). Thiophanate-methyl only delayed growth (4.17%). In field conditions, during the spring-summer 2015 cycle, T. asperellum strain CSAEGro-1 + metalaxyl, and T. asperellum + cyprodinil + fludioxonil, favored the highest number of fruits and seed yield in the crop.
NORTH AMERICAN OVERVIEW ON SUSTAINABILITY APPROACH IN BAKING INDUSTRY

This study analyses the potential, challenges, and opportunities of sustainability in North American baking industry. It departs from the assumption that the baking industry in Canada, United States and Mexico are facing challenges to adjust its production and distribution operations to the sustainable development goals. The methods employed are the analytical-descriptive approach to the various reports on the sustainability concerns leading to a more reflective outcomes about the reality. It is concluded that the assumptions about the relationship between food policies and sustainable development in North American baking industry led to conclude that is weak, if not lacking, to address all the interconnected and interrelated social, environmental, and economic issues and concerns. In fact, the research findings are directed towards explaining this lack of engagement between policy making and implementation in the baking industry across America to be able to deliver better nutrition, health, and lifestyle to consumers.

Acrobasis nuxvorella Neuzing (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), or the Pecan Nut Casebearer (PNC), is a monophagous pecan nut [Carya illinoinensis (Wang) K. Koch] herbivore. This insect has caused major crop losses, despite pecan nut trees producing a high concentration of tannins, which are deterrent compounds for insects. The PNC consumes and processes tannin-rich tissues without any negative effects on its nutrition. Certain bacterial species of the herbivore gut microbiota have been proven to produce tannase, therefore, we hypothesize that the PNC has symbiotic bacteria that produce tannase for the digestion of tannin contained in their food. In this work, live PNC larvae were extracted from pecan nutlets. The larval guts were dissected and their contents were cultured to obtain the cultivable bacteria. A total of 224 bacterial isolates were recovered, 19 of which tested positive for tannase activity. Isolates LB66, LB24, TT29, and TP8 displayed comparable activity to the control strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Further enzyme semi-purification steps showed specific tannase ac tivity values in the range of 39.5–3.7 U/mg of protein. The isolates were identified as Bacillus pumilus strain TT29, Bacillus pumilus strain LB66, Bacillus pumilus strain LB24 and Sthaphylococcus warneri (TP8) by 16S ribo somal RNA gene sequencing. Our findings indicate that PNC larvae contain gut bacteria able to produce tannase that hydrolyze the galloyl ester bonds in tannins.

This paper presents the synchronization of a class of hyperchaotic systems using a robust underactuated approach. The proposed scheme guarantees the convergence in finite time of the slave system trajectories to the master system based on Lyapunov theory. The main novelty of the method is its simplicity resulting from the underactuated strategy and its robustness due to the presence of disturbances in the stability analysis. Simulations are presented to show the performance of the proposed method and its advantages compared with another recent study in the literature. In addition, a secure communication example is considered to illustrate the simple application of the synchronizer.
