Dinucleotide polymorphisms are short tandem repeat sequences that can be used as probes for haplotype analysis in Duchenne's muscular dystrophy (DMD). There are approximately a total of 50,000 to 100,000 such loci in the human genome, and they are highly informative due to the variability of allele lengths at these loci. Primers can be designed to amplify across such repeats located in the dystrophin gene to provide diagnostic information when RFLP analysis is uninformative. We report the usefulness of six such loci for analysis of DMD families in Korean. Four (CA)n repeats is located in introns 44, 45, 49, 50 of the dystrophin gene while 5'DYS-II marker is located upstream to the transcriptional start site for the brain dystrophin promoter and 3'CA marker is identified in the 3'UTR of the gene. As for 5'DYS-II and four (CA)n repeats, the numbers of alleles in our cases were less than in Caucasians, and the heterozygosities were lower than in Caucasians. However, the 3'CA polymorphisms showed almost the same frequencies and heterozygosities as in Caucasians. In addtion, all of female cases showed a heterozygous pattern for at least one locus, with the combination of the six markers. Therefore, they were useful for linkage analysis, identification of deletion mutations, confirmation of paternity and mapping of gene recombination.
A Case of Primary Endobronchial Actinomycosis Presenting as a Complicated Parapneumonic Effusion

Endobronchial actinomycosis is a rare but important and challenging diagnosis to make. We report a case of 57 year-old man who presented with a fever and a right-sided chest pain diagnosed as an endobronchial actinomycosis. Chest computed tomography showed a segmental obstruction and consolidations in right middle lobe combined with an ipsilateral multiloculated pleural effusion. Bronchoscopic biopsy of a mass obstructing the medial segmental bronchus of right middle lobe revealed actinomycosis. This is the first reported case of primary endobronchial actinomycosis that presented with a chest pain and a complicated parapneumonic effusion. Primary endobronchial actinomycosis can be a cause of complicated parapneumonic effusion.

A Fock representation of q-commutation relation is studied by constructing a q-Fock space as the space of the representation, the q-creation and q-annihilation operators (-1 < q < 1). In the case of 0 < q < 1, the q-Fock space is interpolated between the Boson Fock space and the full Fock space. Also, a unitary decomposition of the q-Fock space $(q\;{\neq}\;0)$ is studied.

<P>A series of semiconducting copolymers, poly[2,7-(9,9′-dioctylfluorene)-<I>alt</I>-5,5′-(4′,7′-di-2-thienyl-2′,1′,3′-benzothiadiazole)](PFDTBT), poly[2,2′-(9,9-dioctyl-9<I>H</I>-fluorene-2,7-diyl)dithiophene-<I>alt</I>-5,5′-(4′,7′-di-2-thienyl-2′,1′,3′-benzothiadiazole)](PFD2TBT), and their <I>ter</I>-polymers containing peryleneunits were synthesized using Suzuki coupling polymerization. The peryleneunits were introduced to improve the charge-transport ability by enhancingthe π–π interaction between polymer chains. Theresulting polymers were characterized by <SUP>1</SUP>H NMR, elementalanalysis, DSC, and TGA. The synthesized polymers were soluble in commonorganic solvents, and formed smooth and uniform spin-coated thin films.All of the polymers studied were found to exhibit good thermal stability,losing less than 5% of their weight upon heating to approximately350 °C. Perylene- containing polymers showed higher field-effectmobilities than the corresponding PFDTBT or PFD2TBT polymers becauseof the enhanced π–π interaction between polymerchains upon the introduction of perylene units. Bulk heterojunctionsolar cells were fabricated with configuration of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer:PC<SUB>71</SUB>BM/TiO<SUB><I>x</I></SUB>/Al. The devices usingthe perylene-containing polymers showed higher short-circuit currents,and fill factors than the corresponding PFDTBT or PFD2TBT devices.One of the fabricated devices using a perylene-containing copolymershowed a maximum power conversion efficiency of 3.16%, with a shortcircuit current density of 9.61 mA/cm<SUP>2</SUP>, open circuit voltageof 0.81 V, and fill factor of 41%.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/mamobx/2012/mamobx.2012.45.issue-5/ma202712r/production/images/medium/ma-2011-02712r_0013.gif'></P>

<P>We have found that 9,9′BF can be used as an electron acceptor for P3HT-based OPVs while similar devices using 4,4′BP do not show any photovoltaic effect. This can be related to the respective aromaticity and antiaromaticity of the reduced forms of 9,9′BF or 4,4′BP. <P>Solution-processable semiconducting copolymers, poly[<I>N</I>-9′-heptadecanyl-2,7-carbazole-<I>alt</I>-5,5′-(4′,7′-di-2-thienyl-2′,1′,3′-benzothiadiazole)] (PCDTBT) and poly[4,8-bis(2-ethylhexyl-2-thenyl)-benzo[1,2-<I>b</I>:4,5-<I>b</I>′]dithiophene-<I>alt</I>-5,5′-(4′,7′-di-2-thienyl-2′,1′,3′-benzothiadiazole)] (PBDTDTBT), and their pyrene-containing terpolymers were synthesized using Suzuki or Stille coupling. Pyrene units were introduced to improve the charge-transporting abilities of the polymers. The resulting polymers were found to be soluble in common organic solvents and formed smooth and uniform spin-coated thin films. They also exhibited good thermal stability and lost <5% of their weight upon heating to ∼350 °C. Solution-processed field-effect transistors fabricated using these polymers showed p-type organic thin-film transistor characteristics. The pyrene-containing terpolymers showed higher field-effect mobilities than their corresponding parent polymers, and their mobility increased with increasing pyrene content. Furthermore, they had lower HOMO energy levels than the corresponding PCDTBT or PBDTDTBT polymers. Phenolic Glycosides from the Twigs of <i>Salix glandulosa</i>

<P>As a part of an ongoing search for bioactive constituents from Korean medicinal plants, the phytochemical investigations of the twigs of <I>Salix glandulosa</I> afforded 12 new phenolic glycosides (<B>1</B>–<B>12</B>) and a known analogue (<B>13</B>). The structures of <B>1</B>–<B>13</B> were characterized by a combination of NMR methods (<SUP>1</SUP>H and <SUP>13</SUP>C NMR, <SUP>1</SUP>H–<SUP>1</SUP>H COSY, HMQC, and HMBC), chemical hydrolysis, and GC/MS. The absolute configuration of <B>13</B> [(1<I>R</I>,2<I>S</I>)-2-hydroxycyclohexyl-2′-<I>O</I>-<I>trans</I>-<I>p</I>-coumaroyl-β-<SMALL>d</SMALL>-glucopyranoside] was determined for the first time.
