• H.264 Mapping Strategies for Robust Video Streaming over IEEE 802.11e WLAN

Umar Iqbal Choudhry,JongWon Kim 한국정보과학회 2005 한국정보과학회 학술발표논문집 Vol.32 No.2

In this paper we propose several mapping schemes for streaming video generated by state?of?the?art H.264 codec over IEEE 802.11e enabled wireless LANs. The schemes take advantage of both 802.11e’s QoS mechanism and some novel features of the H.264 codec, so as to protect the most important information in terms of visual quality and reduce distortion under network congestion. The proposed methods are evaluated by means of the H.264 reference software codec, network simulation, and objective video quality measurements. Results show that the proposed methods achieve a robust and error resilient H.264 video streaming over wireless LANs than traditional best?effort streaming.

      • Aggregation Behavior of Oppositely Charged Gold Nanorods in Aqueous Solution

        Umar, Aminah,Choi, Sung-Min American Chemical Society 2013 JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY C - Vol.117 No.22

The aggregation behavior of oppositely charged gold nanorods (GNRs) in aqueous solution has been investigated by zeta potential, UV–vis–NIR, DLS, and TEM measurements. The positively charged GNRs (p-GNRs) and negatively charged GNRs (n-GNRs) were prepared by layer-by-layer deposition of oppositely charged electrolytes on GNR surface. As p-GNRs are added into n-GNR solution (before reaching the isoelectric point), p-GNR/n-GNR aggregations of fairly constant size are formed with the minor component (p-GNRs) mostly at the center and the majority component (n-GNRs) at the outside. While the overall packing of the GNR aggregates is rather random, the local arrangements of GNRs show both side-by-side and end-to-end arrangements, resulting in elongated aggregates due to the anisotropic nature of GNRs. While no precipitation occurs before isoelectric point, the size of aggregates grows rapidly as the isotropic point is approached and rapid precipitation occurs at the isoelectric point, showing ionic-like behavior. Beyond the isoelectric point, partial dissolution of aggregates occurs.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

      • A Centralized e-pedigree system for Agriculture Food Distribution Network

        Umar Farooq,Ganjar Alfian,M. Alex Syaekhoni,HyeJung Ahn,Jongtae Rhee 한국경영과학회 2014 한국경영과학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2014 No.5

Food quality and safety has attained the considerable attention, because of the consumers increasing health awareness, improved economic standards and lifestyle of modern societies. Thus, it is important for distributors, retailers and consumers to purchase agriculture food products and track that they have come through the legal and safe distribution channels. In this paper we proposed a Centralized EPCIS and Sensor Data Repositories based e-pedigree system for agriculture food products to guarantee the quality, safety and reliability of agriculture food products for final consumers. This system not only assure the authenticity of the agriculture food products but also assure the food quality through environmental information such as temperature and humidity during storage, distribution and transportation for food quality.

Ethnobotanical survey and nutritional composition of medicinal plants used for traditional galactagogue practice in Katsina state, Nigeria

        Umar Lawal,Rukayat T. Mohammed,Sani M. Gidado,Sulaiman S. Kankara 경희대학교 융합한의과학연구소 2023 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.23 No.3

An ethnobotanical survey was conducted in Katsina state, Northern Nigeria to document medicinal plants commonly used by lactating mothers to boost breast milk production. Two hundred and forty (240) respondents made up of (120) nursing mothers, (60) herbalists and (60) traditional birth attendants were interviewed. Ethnobotanical data was obtained using the structured questionnaire method. Standard procedures were followed to analyse the phyto-chemical, proximate, mineral concentrations and chemical composition of the ethanolic extract of the most cited plants. Forty (40) plant species belonging to 38 genera distributed among 24 families are used as galactagogues in Katsina state, Nigeria. All the plant samples contained alkaloids, cardiac glycosides, flavonoids, saponins, tannins and terpenoids. Anthraquinones were found to be absent in Andropogon gayanus, Moringa oleifera and Pennisetum glaucum while phytosterol was absent in Pennisetum glaucum and Vernonia amygdalina. They were also found to contain nutrient compositions in varying amounts. Crotalaria retusa had the highest moisture (12.80%), crude lipid (13.50%) and crude fibre (21.76%) content. Momordica balsamina has the highest ash (13.76%) content. Pennisetum glaucum had the highest carbohydrate content (76.19%) and energy content (364.95%). Mineral analysis revealed that Andropogon gayanus, Momordica balsamina and Vernonia amygdalina showed equal phosphorus (0.3 ppm) contents. Crotalaria retusa showed the highest chromium (2.59 ppm) and copper (1.31 ppm) content. GC/MS analysis revealed that Momordica balsamina contained 99 phytoconstituents. With only 9,12-Octadecadienoic acid (Z,Z)- identified as the only phytoconstituents showing phytoestrogen activity. The indigenous knowledge about lactating mothers in Katsina state, Nigeria used medicinal plants to boost breast milk production is documented.

      • E-23 : Structural and optical properties of flower and needle-shaped ZnO nanostructures by ALD

        ( Umar Ahmad ),이석,김상훈,라현욱,한윤봉 한국화학공학회 2007 화학공학의이론과응용 Vol.10 No.2

A novel method, atomic layer deposition is employed to grow the needle and flower-shaped ZnO arrays at different growth temperatures. The needle shaped nanostructures were grown on the Au catalyzed Si(100) substrate while the flower-shaped was grown without metal catalyst on Si(100) substrate. The high density needle-shaped ZnO nanostructures were confirmed using the field emission electron microscopy. Investigations using the high resolution transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction patterns confirmed that the as-grown nanostructures are single crystalline with wurtzite hexagonal structure and preferentially oriented in the c-axis direction. Optical properties of these structures were measured at room temperature by photoluminescence spectroscopy. The needle-shaped and flower shaped nanostructures show a broad band in the visible region with suppressed UV emission. It is indicating that these nanostructures have structural defects (oxygen vacancies and zinc interstitials etc).

HOW TO DEAL WITH RADIO ASTRONOMY INTERFERENCE

UMAR, ROSLAN,HAZMIN, SABRI NOR,ABIDIN, ZAMRI ZAINAL,IBRAHIM, ZAINOL ABIDIN The Korean Astronomical Society 2015 天文學論叢 Vol.30 No.2

Radio sources are very weak, as they can travel through large distances. Radio sources also have photons with low energies compared to others electromagnetic waves (EM). Microwave photons have a little more energy than radio waves, infrared photons have still more, then visible, ultraviolet, X-rays, and the most energetic electromagnetic wave is gamma-rays. Radio astronomy studies are restricted due to radio frequency interference (RFI) produced by people. If this disturbance is not minimized, it poses critical problems for astrophysical studies. The purpose of this paper is to profile RFI maps in Peninsular Malaysia with a minimum mapping technique for RFI interference. Decision-making processes using GIS (Geographical Information System) for the selection requires gathering information for a variety of parameters. These factors affecting the selection process are also taken into account. In this study, various factors or parameters are involved, such as the availability of telecommunications transmission (including radio and television), rainfall, water lines and human activity. This mapping step must be followed by RFI site testing in order to identify areas of low RFI. This study will benefit radio astronomy research, especially regarding the RFI profile.

Morphology controlled facile synthesis of MnO2 adsorbents for rapid strontium removal

        Umar Asim,Syed M. Husnain,Naseem Abbas,Faisal Shahzad,Abdul Rehman Khan,Tahir Ali 한국공업화학회 2021 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.98 No.-

MnO2 nanostructures with three distinct architectures, namelyflower, balk and tube-like, have beensynthesized through a single step microwave assisted hydrothermal method at different reactiontemperatures (110 C, 140 C and 180 C). The characterization of as prepared MnO2 samples wereperformed by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electronmicroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms revealedthe higher specific surface area and porosity of theflower like MnO2 as compared to balk and tube-likeMnO2. The adsorption behavior of as prepared adsorbents was investigated towards Sr2+ radionuclide. Because of the hierarchal structure and the high surface area (62.64 m2/g), MnO2-110 depicted the bestSr2+ adsorption performance with maximum adsorption capacity of 52 mg/g at pH 6 as compared to otherMnO2 morphologies synthesized at 140 C and 180 C. The kinetic studies revealed that the adsorption ofSr2+ onto MnO2-110 followed the pseudo-first-order model whereas the adsorption equilibrium dataobeyed the Freundlich and Sips model. Moreover, the MnO2-110 adsorbent reached the steady statequickly ( 10 min) and is capable to bind Sr2+ in slightly acidic to alkaline solutions.

Management of gunshot wounds near the elbow: experiences at a high-volume level I trauma center

        Umar Ghilzai,Abdullah Ghali,Aaron Singh,Thomas Wesley Mitchell,Scott A. Mitchell 대한견주관절학회 2024 대한견주관절의학회지 Vol.27 No.1

Background: Gunshot-related fractures near the elbow are challenging, and available data to guide the practitioner are lacking. This report analyzes injury patterns and treatment strategies in a case series from a high-volume urban trauma center. Methods: All periarticular gunshot fractures near the elbow treated at a level 1 trauma center from 2014 to 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. Fracture location, patient demographics, concomitant injuries, treatment modalities, and complications were analyzed. Results: Twenty-four patients were identified. All patients received prophylactic antibiotics upon admission and underwent urgent surgical debridement. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) was performed with initial debridement in 22 of 24 patients. Seven patients sustained distal humerus fractures, 10 patients sustained isolated proximal ulna or proximal radius fractures, and seven had combined fracture patterns. Eleven patients presented with nerve palsy, and two had transected nerves. Two patients had vascular injury requiring repair. One patient required a temporary elbow-spanning external fixator and underwent staged debridement followed by ORIF. One patient with a grade IIIC fracture developed a deep infection that precluded ORIF. One patient required revision ORIF due to fracture displacement. Conclusions: This investigation reports on management of ballistic fractures near the elbow at a busy urban level I trauma center. Our management centered on rapid debridement, early definitive fixation, and intravenous antibiotic administration. We report on associated neurovascular injury, bone loss, and other challenges in this patient population. Level of evidence: IV.

      • Hepatitis C Stage Classification with hybridization of GA and Chi2 Feature Selection

Umar, Rukayya,Adeshina, Steve,Boukar, Moussa Mahamat International Journal of Computer ScienceNetwork S 2022 International journal of computer science and netw Vol.22 No.1

In metaheuristic algorithms such as Genetic Algorithm (GA), initial population has a significant impact as it affects the time such algorithm takes to obtain an optimal solution to the given problem. In addition, it may influence the quality of the solution obtained. In the machine learning field, feature selection is an important process to attaining a good performance model; Genetic algorithm has been utilized for this purpose by scientists. However, the characteristics of Genetic algorithm, namely random initial population generation from a vector of feature elements, may influence solution and execution time. In this paper, the use of a statistical algorithm has been introduced (Chi2) for feature relevant checks where p-values of conditional independence were considered. Features with low p-values were discarded and subject relevant subset of features to Genetic Algorithm. This is to gain a level of certainty of the fitness of features randomly selected. An ensembled-based learning model for Hepatitis has been developed for Hepatitis C stage classification. 1385 samples were used using Egyptian-dataset obtained from UCI repository. The comparative evaluation confirms decreased in execution time and an increase in model performance accuracy from 56% to 63%.
