      • The effects of cryopreservation on human dental pulp-derived mesenchymal stem cells

        The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of cryopreservation on dental pulp-derived stem cells (DPSC) viability over a period of three years. Dental pulp-derived stem cells were isolated and cultured from thirty-one healthy teeth. DPSC isolates were assessed for doubling-time and baseline viability prior to cryopreservation and were assessed again at three time points; one week (T1), 18 months (T2), and 36 months (T3). DPSC can be grouped based on their observed doubling times; slow (sDT), intermediate (iDT), and rapid (rDT). Viability results demonstrated all three types of DPSC isolates (sDT, iDT and rDT) exhibit time-dependent reductions in viability following cryopreservation, with the greatest reduction observed among sDT-DPSCs and the smallest observed among the rDT-DPSC isolates. Cryopreserved DPSCs demonstrate time-dependent reductions in cellular viability. Although reductions in viability were smallest at the initial time point (T1) and greatest at the final time point (T3), these changes were markedly different among DPSC isolates with similar doubling times (DTs). Furthermore, the analysis of various DPSC biomarkers - including both intracellular and cell surface markers, revealed differential mRNA expression. More specifically, the relative high expression of Sox-2 was only found only among the rDT isolates, which was associated with the smallest reduction in viability over time. The expression of Oct4 and NANOG were also higher among rDT isolates, however, expression was comparatively lower among the sDT isolates that had the highest reduction in cellular viability over the course of this study. These data may suggest that some biomarkers, including Sox-2, Oct4 and NANOG may have some potential for use as biomarkers that may be associated with either higher or lower cellular viability over long-term storage applications although more research will be needed to confirm these findings.

        보다 나은 중학교 교육을 위한 간학문적 교육과정 통합

        이 글은 왜 우리가 중학교에서 교육과정을 통합해야 하는가, 어떻게 중학교에서 교육과정을 통합할 수 있는가 하는 질문을 다루었다. 중학교는 초등학교와 고등학교를 연결하는 위치에 있기 때문에 교육과정 통합이 필요하다. 초등학교에서는 한 교사가 모든 교과를 가르치고, 고등학교에서는 각 교과교사가 자기 교과만 가르치는 시스템이다. 따라서 중학교에서 교과를 적절하게 가르치기 위해서 2~4명이 교과 교사들이 팀을 이루어 함께 협력하는 체제이어야 한다. 무엇보다 학생의 삶과 교육과정을 연결하기 위해서이다. 교육과정을 통합할 수 있는 두 가지 유형이 있다. 첫 번째는 간학문적 유닛을 설계하는 것이고, 두 번째는 교육과정 통합이다. 간학문적 유닛을 설계할 때는 통합할 교과를 구성하면서 시작한다. 이 과정에서 주제가 나오고, 각 교과가 이 주제에 어떻게 기여할 것인가를 정한다. 반면 교육과정 통합은 주제에서 시작하고, 주제와 관련있는 큰 아이디어나 개념을 정하고, 마지막으로 이 아이디어나 개념을 공부하기 위한 활동을 정한다. The essential questions for this paper are as follows: Why do we integrate curriculum in middle school? How do we integrate curriculum in middle school? The middle school is the important bridge between the elementary and high school worlds. One primary teacher who is responsible for teaching all of the content areas in primary school. But in high school, each teacher is responsible for one content area. So, in the middle level, teachers should be working on teams of 2 to 4 people, and that team should be responsible for all of the content areas. And they should be looking for relevance between student`s life and the curriculum. There are two types of curriculum integration planning. The first one is Interdisciplinary Unit planning, and the other is Curriculum Integration. Interdisciplinary Unit planning begins with organizing the different content areas. A theme is then chosen, and each content area decides how it can contribute to the theme. In Curriculum Integration, planning begins with a central theme, and then big ideas and concepts related to the theme are identified. Finally, activities are chosen to explore those ideas and concepts.

        Perceptual Priming and Structural Choice in Russian Sentence Production

        We report the results of a study that used perceptual priming paradigm to investigate how attentional focus on a referent influences structural choice in Russian sentence production. Experimental hypotheses were based on two previously reported findings. First, some sentence production studies using English demonstrated that perceptually priming a referent of a visual event improves its chances of assignment as the Subject of a sentence about this event and triggers the resulting choice between active and passive voice (Gleitman, et al., 2007; Tomlin, 1995, 1997). Second, a study by Ferreira (1996) showed that English speakers alternate between the structures easier and faster when they have a wider battery of structural alternatives available to them. Our data confirmed both findings with important detalization. First, Russian speakers were more likely to assign the sentential starting point but not the Subject to the perceptually primed referent alternating between the agent-initial and the patient-initial structural alternatives. This finding suggests that perceptual priming leads to the positional but not the preferential assignment of grammatical roles in Russian. Second, Russian speakers having a seemingly wider inventory of structural options than their English counterparts were more reluctant to alternate structure as a function of the perceptual prime. This tendency may result form the necessity to maintain early commitments to the case-marked noun forms, which effectively binds structural selection to a much smaller number of available alternatives than the normative grammar of Russian suggests.

      • Hybrid Communication Protocols and Control Algorithms for NextGen Aircraft Arrivals

        <P>Capacity constraints imposed by current air traffic management technologies and protocols could severely limit the performance of the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). A fundamental design decision in the development of this system is the level of decentralization that balances system safety and efficiency. A new surveillance technology called automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) can be potentially used to shift air traffic control to a more distributed architecture; however, channel variations and interference with existing secondary radar replies can affect ADS-B systems. This paper presents a framework for managing arrivals at an airport by using a hybrid centralized/distributed algorithm for communication and control. The algorithm combines the centralized control that is used in congested regions with the distributed control that is used in lower traffic density regions. The hybrid algorithm is evaluated through realistic simulations of operations around a major airport. The proposed strategy is shown to significantly improve air traffic control performance under various operating conditions by adapting to the underlying communication, navigation, and surveillance systems. The performance of the proposed strategy is found to be comparable to fully centralized strategies, despite requiring significantly less ground infrastructure.</P>
