Objective To determine whether asymptomatic flexible flat feet show specific postural assessment with respect to neutral feet in 6-year-old children. Methods In this cross-sectional observational study, 164 subjects were observed and divided into two groups: 57 with flexible flat feet and 107 with neutral feet. A non-quantitative inspection by podoscopy and baropodometry were performed to evaluate plantar support, and a clinical examination to assess postural setting. Results The prevalence of flexible flat feet was 34.8%. The differenceinthe mean centre of pressure (CoP) between the two groups was significant (p=0.028), regarding the antero-posterior direction of CoP only. There was no significant differencein the presence of postural growth disharmony between the neutral and flat-feet groups. Conclusion The flattening of the plantar archseems to be linked to a displacement of CoP Y, more posterior in flat feet than in neutral feet; on the other hand, postural harmony in 6-year-old children during growth is not influenced by flat feet.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The standard pattern of Brazilian food consumption is based on the combination of rice and beans served together in the main meals. This study assessed the effects of Brazilian-staple calorie-restricted (BS-diet) dietary advice, with brown rice and beans, on metabolic parameters, body composition, and food intake in overweight/obese subjects. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Twentyseven subjects were randomly assigned to a conventional-type calorie-restricted diet (CT-diet) (n= 13) or a BS-diet (n = 14). Glucose metabolism, lipid profile, anthropometric and body composition parameters, and food intake were measured before and after 16 weeks. Paired t-tests/Wilcoxon tests were used for comparison of differences from baseline and unpaired t-tests/Mann-Whitney tests were used for comparison of differences between the groups. RESULTS: After16 weeks, both groups showed reductions in weight and waist circumference (P < 0.02), and the BS-diet group showed a decrease in body fat (P = 0.0001), and significant improvement in glucose metabolism (fasting plasma glucose, glucose and insulin areas under the curve, Cederholm index, and HOMA2-%β) (P ≤ 0.04) and lipid profile (cholesterol, triacylglycerol, LDL-c, VLDL-c, and cholesterol/HDL-c ratio) (P ≤ 0.05). In addition, the BS-diet group showed significant improvement in HOMA2-%β, compared to the CT-diet group (P = 0.03). The BS-diet group also showed a significant reduction in energy, lipids, carbohydrate, and cholesterol intake (P ≤ 0.04) and an increase in fiber intake (P ≤ 0.001), while the CT-diet group showed a significant reduction in intake of energy, macronutrients, PUFA, and cholesterol (P ≤ 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: These results demonstrate the benefits of the BS-diet on metabolic parameters in obese subjects.

To research the correlation between oxygen vacancy and the electrical characteristics of ZTO, which is made by using a target mixed ZnO:SnO2=1:1, the ZnO, SnO2 and ZTO were analyzed by PL, XPS, XRD patterns and electrical properties. It was compared with the electron orbital spectra of O 1s in accordance with the electrical characteristics of ZnO, SnO2 and ZTO. The electrical characteristics of ZTO were improved by increasing the annealing temperatures, due to the high degree of crystal structures at a high temperature, and the physical properties of ZTO was similar to that of ZnO. The amorphous structure of SnO2 was increased with increasing the temperature. The Schottky contact of oxide semiconductors was formed using the depletion region, which is increased by the electron-hole combination due to the annealing processes. ZnO showed the Ohmic contact in spite of a high annealing temperature, but SnO2 and ZTO had Schottky contact. As such, it was confirmed that the electrical properties of ZTO are affected by the molecules of SnO2.

Gentiana lutea roots have been widely used in the traditional medicine, especially for their stomachic properties. In this study, the effect of G. lutea root methanol extract on SH-SY5Y cell survival and on anti-proliferative activity of pro-apoptotic agents was evaluated. In neuroblastoma cell line SH-SY5Y, the extract did not exhibit any cytotoxic activity, but protected cells from vinblastine-induced apoptosis. In the combined treatment with 200 μg/ml extract plus 0.1 μM vinblastine, extract significantly increased cell survival, reduced the percentage of apoptotic cells and decreased caspase-3 activity if compared with the vinblastine alone treatment. The anti-apoptotic activity of the extract was associated to the down-regulation of Sirt-1 protein and to the increase of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 protein expression and intracellular GSH levels. Since the apoptosis modulation was evidenced on a neuroblastoma cell line, G. lutea extract could have a promising potential as a neuroprotective agent. Moreover, G. lutea root extract exhibited anti-inflammatory activity, since it inhibited LPS-induced expression of TNF-α in macrophage RAW264.7 cells.
Culture and Trade in the European Union
( Teresa L Cyrus ) 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 2015 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.30 No.2
Since its origin, the European Union has focused on removing barriers to the full integration of its members` economies. While formal institutions have been adapted, informal social norms may have also changed. In this paper, variables from the World Values Survey are used to estimate the cultural distance between countries to examine the extent to which cultural distance and bilateral trade are related. Cultural distance reflects the differences between two countries` norms and beliefs. It is predicted that cultural distance reduces trade while trade reduces cultural distance. Fixed-effects regressions for exports and cultural distance show that, contrary to the prediction, cultural distance raises trade and trade raises cultural distance. However, these results are questionable due to the potential problem of endogeneity. Once the problem of endogeneity is addressed with the use of simultaneous equations, the results show that, in fact, cultural distance has no effect on trade, while trade reduces cultural distance.
