In summer, the high ambient air temperatures and increased solar radiation cause rises in rail temperatures, and rails can experience the buckling. In this study, a thermofluidic analysis was conducted to predict the temperature of a rail. Numerical simulations were performed by changing the orientation of the rails. The south-north rail and the east-west rail was named “0° rail” and “90° rail”, respectively. The numerical results from the 0° and 90° rails were validated by comparing them with measured values. Based on this validation, the temperature distribution of a 45° rail was analyzed. The total amount of energies received by the rail were in the order of 0° > 45° > 90°. The results of this study showed that the temperature of a rail can be sufficiently predicted through numerical simulation, and this approach can be used in a forecast to predict a time when buckling might occur.

It is concluded that at least two tests, preferably three tests, should be used inasmuch as each of the various thyroid function tests is not a perfect reflection of the thyrometabolic status of the patients. The serum thyroxine determination by Marphy's modified technique is a valuable addition to the parameters of the thyroid function tests. However, its limitation in the pregnant women as a diagnostic method is evident, necessitating a more refined test such as the determinatio of free serum thyroxine.
Physicochemical Properties of β-Glucan from Acid Hydrolyzed Barley

This study was performed to investigate changes in the content and purity, as well as physical characteristics of β-glucan extracted from acid hydrolyzed whole grain barleys. Waxy and non-waxy barleys (Hordeum vulgare) were hydrolyzed with different concentrations of HCl (0.1~0.5 N) for 1 h. As the HCl concentration increased, the contents of total and soluble β-glucan from acid hydrolyzed barley decreased. However the ratio of soluble/total β-glucan content and purities of β-glucan significantly increased. The ratio of β-(1→4)/β-(1→3) linkages, molecular weight, and viscosity of soluble β-glucan of raw barleys were 2.28~2.52, 6.0~7.0×10<SUP>5</SUP> g/mol, and 12.8~32.8 centipoise (cP). Those of isolated soluble β-glucan were significantly decreased to 2.05~2.15, 6.6~7.8×10<SUP>3</SUP> g/mol, and 3.6~4.2 cP, respectively, with increasing acid concentration. The re-solubility of raw barley β-glucan was about 50%, but increased to 97% with increasing acid concentration. Acid hydrolysis was shown to be an effective method to produce β-glucan with high ratio of soluble β-glucan content, purity, water solubility, and low viscosity.

<P>Six seongsanamides were isolated from the culture broth of <I>Bacillus safensis</I> KCTC 12796BP, and their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic data analysis combined with Marfey’s method, electronic circular dichroism calculations, and biosynthetic gene cluster analysis. Compounds <B>1</B>-<B>4</B> were bicyclic peptides with isodityrosine residues; <B>5</B> and <B>6</B> were monocyclic peptides. Only the bicyclic seongsanamides inhibited degranulation and LTC<SUB>4</SUB>/PGD<SUB>2</SUB> generation in IgE/Ag-stimulated bone marrow-derived mast cells. Oral administration of <B>1</B> suppressed mast cell-dependent passive cutaneous anaphylaxis reaction.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>
Effects of Different Forms of Chromium Supplements on Serum Glucose, Insulin and Lipids in Rats

This study evaluated the effects of different forms of chromium supplements on serum glucose, insulin and lipid concentrations in rats. Sprague-Dawley male rats were randomly assigned to one of three dietary groups and fed AIN-76 semi-purified basal diets supplemented with 300 ppb Cr from Cr methionine (CrMet) and Cr chloride (CrCl₃) or without Cr (control). By the end of the 4^(th) week, all rats were decapitated, blood collected, and serum glucose, insulin and lipid concentrations were determined. The CrMet and CrCl₃ supplementation did not affect weight gain and feed efficiency ratio. However, feed intake was significantly higher in CrMet groups than control (p<0.05). CrMet-supplemented rats had markedly increased insulin levels (p<0.05) compared with controls. Serum lipids were not significantly different between the control and the CrMet groups. CrCl₃ supplementation decreased total cholesterol and triglyceride, but the decreases were only significant for the control group. CrCl₃ supplementation was associated with significant decreases in total cholesterol compared with CrMet supplementation. These results indicate that CrMet supplementation is effective for increasing serum insulin, and CrCl₃ may improve lipid concentrations, because we observed decreased serum total cholesterol and an improved total cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol ratio (THR).
