<P>Currently, the most efficient perovskite solar cells (PSCs) mainly use planar and mesoporous titanium dioxide (TiO2) as an electron-transport layer (ETL). However, because of its intrinsic photocatalytic properties, TiO2 can decompose perovskite absorber and lead to poor stability under solar illumination (ultraviolet light). Herein, a simplified architectural ETL-free PSC with enhanced efficiency and outstanding photostability is produced by the facile deposition of a bathocuproine (BCP) interlayer. Power conversion efficiency of the ETL-free PSC improves from 15.56 to 19.07% after inserting the BCP layer, which is the highest efficiency reported for PSCs involving an ETL-free architecture, versus 19.03% for the n-i-p full device using TiO2 as an ETL. The BCP interlayer has been demonstrated to have several positive effects on the photovoltaic performances of devices, such as “modulation doping” of the perovskite layer, modification of FTO surface work function, and enhancing the charge-transfer efficiency between FTO and perovskite. Moreover, the BCP-based ETL-free devices exhibit outstanding photostability: the unencapsulated BCP-based ETL-free PSCs retain over 90% of their initial efficiencies after 1000 h of storage in air and maintain 92.2% after 450 h of exposure to full solar irradiation (without a UV filter), compared to only 14.1% in the n-i-p full cells under the same condition.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>
First-principles Study on the Electronic Structures and the Optical Properties of Hg1−xCdxTe
Song-You Wang,Gang Wang,Song Wu,Zhao-Hua Geng,Liang-Yao Chen,Yu Jia 한국물리학회 2010 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.56 No.4
The electronic structures and the optical properties of the direct-band-gap infrared alloy Hg1−xCdxTe (x = 0.250, 0.375, 0.500, 0.625, 0.875, and 1.000) were obtained using the local spin density approximation (LSDA) in the density functional theory (DFT). The calculated lattice constants are in agreement with these calculated using Vergard’s law and the band structures of these alloys are similar. The three peaks of the imaginary part in the dielectric function reveal that the conduction bands lift with increasing x. The calculated static dielectric constants of these alloys were shown to behave as a parabolic function. The results for the loss functions and effective electronic densities show that few electrons take part in the interband transitions.

Background: Curcumin, a phenolic compound extracted from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa, has shown cytotoxic effects against a variety of cancers. The aim of this study was to identify potential microRNA (miRNA) mediators of the anticancer effects of curcumin in ovarian cancer cells. Materials and Methods: SKOV3 ovarian cancer cells were treated with curcumin ($10-60{\mu}M$) and miR-9 expression, cell proliferation, and apoptosis were assessed. The effects of miR-9 depletion on curcumin-mediated growth suppression were also examined. Phosphorylation of Akt and forkhead box protein O1 (FOXO1) was measured in cells with miR-9 overexpression or curcumin treatment. Results: Curcumin caused a significant and dose-dependent increase of miR-9 expression in SKOV3 cells, while significantly impeding cell proliferation and stimulating apoptosis. Depletion of miR-9 significantly (p<0.05) attenuated the growth-suppressive effects of curcumin on SKOV3 cells, coupled with reduced percentages of apoptotic cells. In contrast, overexpression of miR-9 significantly enhanced the cleavage of caspase-3 and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase and promoted apoptotic death in SKOV3 cells. Western blot analysis showed that both miR-9 overexpression and curcumin similarly caused a significant (p<0.05) decline in the phosphorylation of Akt and FOXO1, compared to untreated cells. Conclusions: The present study provided evidence that curcumin exerts its cytotoxic effects against SKOV3 ovarian cancer cells largely through upregulation of miR-9 and subsequent modulation of Akt/FOXO1 axis. Further studies are needed to identify direct targets of miR-9 that mediate the anticancer effects of curcumin in ovarian cancer cells.

Background: There are few choices for treatment of advanced cancer patients who do not respond to or tolerate conventional anti-cancer treatments. Therefore this study aimed to deploy the benefits and clinical efficacy of continuous dendritic cell-cytokine induced killer cell infusions in such patients. Materials and Methods: A total of 381 infusions (from 67 advanced cases recruited) were included in this study. All patients underwent peripheral blood mononuclear cell apheresis for the following cellular therapy and dendritic cells-cytokine induced killer cells were expanded in vitro. Peripheral blood T lymphocyte subsets were quantified through flow cytometry to address the cellular immunity status. Clinical efficacy and physical activities were evaluated by RECIST criteria and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group scores respectively. Logistic regression model was used to estimate the association between cellular infusions and clinical benefits. Results: An average of $5.7{\pm}2.94{\times}10^9$ induced cells were infused each time and patients were exposed to 6 infusions. Cellular immunity was improved in that cytotoxic $CD8^+CD28^+$ T lymphocytes were increased by 74% and suppressive $CD8^+CD28^-$ T lymphocytes were elevated by 16% (p<0.05). Continuous infusion of dendritic cells-cytokine induced killer cells was associated with improvement of both patient status and cellular immunity. A median of six infusions were capable of reducing risk of progression by 70% (95%CI 0.10-0.91). Every elevation of one ECOG score corresponded to a 3.90-fold higher progression risk (p<0.05) and 1% increase of $CD8^+CD28^-$ T cell proportion reflecting a 5% higher risk of progression (p<0.05). Conclusions: In advanced cancer patients, continuous dendritic cell-cytokine induced killer cell infusions are capable of recovering cellular immunity, improving patient status and quality of life in those who are unresponsive to conventional cancer treatment.

<P>Acupuncture improves ethanol withdrawal-induced anxiety in rats in an acupoint-dependent manner. Thus, the present study investigated the effects of acupuncture on acute restraint stress- (ARS-) induced anxiety. Male rats were exposed to ARS for 3 h followed by acupuncture at either PC6 (Neiguan), HT7 (Shenmen), or a nonacupoint (tail) once a day for three consecutive days. Five minutes after the third acupuncture treatment, anxiety-like behavior was evaluated in an elevated plus maze (EPM). Additionally, plasma corticosterone (CORT) levels were measured by radioimmunoassay and the concentrations of norepinephrine (NE) and 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy-phenylglycol (MHPG) in the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography. Acupuncture at PC6, but not HT7 or a nonacupoint, attenuated anxiety-like behavior, but this attenuation was abolished by a postacupunctural intra-CeA infusion of NE. Acupuncture at PC6 also reduced the oversecretion of plasma CORT and inhibited increases in amygdaloid NE and MHPG induced by ARS. Further, Western blot analyses and real-time polymerase chain reaction assays revealed that acupuncture at PC6 prevented ARS-induced enhancements in the protein and mRNA expressions of tyrosine hydroxylase in the CeA. These results suggest that acupuncture performed specifically at acupoint PC6 reduces ARS-induced anxiety-like behavior by dampening amygdaloid noradrenergic responses.</P>

Green pitch coke with an average particle size of 2 mm was adopted as densifier and added to the rawmaterials of conventional A3-3 matrix graphite (MG) to prepare modified A3-3 matrix graphite (MMG)by the quasi-isostatic molding method. The structure, mechanical and thermal properties were assessed. Compared with MG, MMG had a more compact structure, and exhibited improved properties of highermechanical strength, higher thermal conductivity and better molten salt barrier performance. Notably, under the same infiltration pressure of 5 atm, the fluoride salt occupation of MMG was only 0.26 wt%,whereas it was 15.82 wt% for MG. The densification effect of green pitch coke endowed MMG withimproved properties for potential use in the spherical fuel elements of molten salt reactor.

In this paper, the electronic and the optical properties of oxides for group-IV elements in an inverse Ag2O structure, including Si, Ge, and Sn, and their ternary alloys, were studied with the density function theory of first principles. The results show that they have a high-density phase and a high dielectric constant. Moreover, the lattice constants of Si0.5Ge0.5O2 and SiO2 are really close to those of Si(100) surfaces, suggesting the possibility of forming a defect-free superlattice. With changing element, the calculated results show that the lattice constants of the ternary alloys tend to be bigger while the energy gaps show a different trend. The optical properties of these compounds as functions of physical quantities, such as the density of states, the complex dielectric function, and the static dielectric constant, are given to support the potential applications of the compounds in the future.

Objectives: To assess knowledge of HPV and attitudes towards HPV vaccination among the general female population, government officials, and healthcare providers in China to assist the development of an effective national HPV vaccination program. Methods: A cross-sectional epidemiologic survey was conducted across 21 urban and rural sites in China using a short questionnaire. 763 government officials, 760 healthcare providers, and 11,681 women aged 15-59 years were included in the final analysis. Data were analyzed using standard descriptive statistics and logistic regression. Results: Knowledge of HPV among the general female population was low; only 24% had heard of HPV. Less than 20% of healthcare providers recognized sexually na$\ddot{i}$ve women as the most appropriate population for HPV vaccination. There was high acceptance of the HPV vaccine for all categories of respondents. Only 6% of women were willing to pay more than US $300 for the vaccine. Conclusions: Aggressive education is necessary to increase knowledge of HPV and its vaccine. Further proof of vaccine safety and efficacy and government subsidies combined with increased awareness could facilitate development and implementation of HPV vaccination in China.

Background/Aims The interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) are pacemaker cells in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. We examined whether the activity of ICC could be stimulated to control colonic contractions. An optogenetics-based mouse model in which the light-sensitive protein channelrhodopsin-2 (ChR2) was expressed was used to accomplish cell specific, direct stimulation of ICC. Methods An inducible site-specific Cre-loxP recombination system was used to generate KitCreERT2/+;ROSAChR2(H134R)/tdTomato/+ mice in which ChR2(H134R), a variant of ChR2, was genetically expressed in ICC after tamoxifen administration. Genotyping and immunofluorescence analysis were performed to confirm gene fusion and expression. Isometric force recordings were performed to measure changes in contractions in the colonic muscle strips. Results ChR2 was specifically expressed in Kit-labeled ICC. The isometric force recordings showed that the contractions of the colonic muscle strips changed under 470 nm blue light. Light stimulation evoked premature low-frequency and high amplitude (LFHA) contractions and enhanced the frequency of the LFHA contractions. The light-evoked contractions were blocked by T16Ainh-A01, an antagonist of anoctamin 1 channels that are expressed selectively in ICC in colonic muscles. Conclusions Our study demonstrates a potentially feasible approach to stimulate the activity of ICC by optogenetics. The colonic motor patterns of muscle strips, especially LFHA contractions, can be regulated by 470 nm light via ChR2, which is expressed in ICC.
