The Evaluation of Geotube Behaviors on Muddy Beach: Field Monitoring and Numerical Analysis

Siew Cheng Lee,Roslan Hashim,Kim Hung Mo 대한토목학회 2018 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.22 No.11

The use of geotubes is now common in coastline protection due to notable advantages such as erosion prevention, competitive cost and speedy installation procedures. Previous researchers have presented analytical, empirical and numerical approaches for geotube design. However, design approach for geotube which functions as breakwater on deformable muddy foundation and subjected to hydrodynamic loads has not been well reported. Hence, this study evaluates the behavior of geotube breakwaters installed on a deformable muddy foundation based on field measurements and numerical analysis. The field measurements were carried out on quarter-yearly basis to assess the behavior of geotube under hydrodynamic forces. Two-dimensional finite element analysis was performed to simulate the deformation and the displacement of geotube breakwater subjected to hydrodynamic loads, taking into account of deformable foundation condition. The structural stability and structure’s height reduction due to foundation settlement are essential considerations in breakwater design. The agreements between field monitoring and numerical results were promising; therefore, the finite element models can be used to predict the behavior of geotube on those muddy coast areas with similar hydrodynamic and geological conditions.

      • The Relationship of Multi-dimensional Accessibilities to Gambling

        Ping-Fong Chia,Siew-Cheng Ng 한국문화관광학회 2011 문화관광연구 Vol.13 No.1

Gambling is part of daily life in many Asian cultures. Accessibility is the beginning of the conditioning effects of participation in gambling. Thus, this study attempts to understand the characteristics of gamblers in a town situated in the centre of Johor state in relationship of multidimensional accessibility to gambling. Four dimensions of accessibility, which are (1) geography accessibility, (2) temporal accessibility, (3) social accessibility and (4) financial accessibility were assessing its influence on gamblers. 169 samples were further categorized into non-regular gamblers and regular gamblers. This research was conducted in Kluang town due to its centre location in Johor state contributing its ease of accessibility to Casino de Genting, the only legal casino operator in Malaysia. Furthermore, it is approximately 50 percent of Chinese residents in Kluang. Findings indicated that ease of accessibility, safety and comfort are most concerned by the gamblers Recommendations were developed for the interest of casino management accordance to the needs of the gamblers.

Nitrophenyl Functionalization of Carbon Nanotubes and Its Effect on Properties of MWCNT/LCP Composites

        Nanda Gopal Sahoo,Henry Kuo Feng Cheng,Hongqian Bao,Siew Hwa Chan,Lin Li,Jianhong Zhao 한국고분자학회 2011 Macromolecular Research Vol.19 No.7

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were functionalized on their sidewalls with p-nitrophenyl (C_6H_4NO_2) to make MWCNTs compatible with liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) through a specific interaction with LCP. This study examined the rheological, morphological, mechanical, dynamic mechanical, and thermal properties of LCP in detail with a variation of the nitrophenyl-functionalized MWCNTs in the LCP matrix. A higher complex viscosity, storage, and loss modulus were observed in the nitrophenyl-functionalized MWCNTs/LCP composites than the composites with the same loading of raw MWCNTs. The nitrophenyl groups attached to the MWCNTs improved their dispersion and interfacial adhesion with the LCP matrix, which was confirmed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). As a result, the incorporation of the nitrophenyl-functionalized MWCNTs effectively enhanced the mechanical and thermal stability of the LCP.

      • Bending characteristics of Prestressed High Strength Concrete (PHC) spun pile measured using distributed optical fibre strain sensor

Hisham Mohamad,Bun Pin Tee,Mun Fai Chong,Siew Cheng Lee,Krisada Chaiyasarn 국제구조공학회 2022 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.29 No.2

Pre-stressed concrete circular spun piles are widely used in various infrastructure projects around the world and offer an economical deep foundation system with consistent and superior quality compared to cast in-situ and other concrete piles. Conventional methods for measuring the lateral response of piles have been limited to conventional instrumentation, such as electrical based gauges and pressure transducers. The problem with existing technology is that the sensors are not able to assist in recording the lateral stiffness changes of the pile which varies along the length depending on the distribution of the flexural moments and appearance of tensile cracks. This paper describes a full-scale bending test of a 1-m diameter spun pile of 30 m long and instrumented using advanced fibre optic distributed sensor, known as Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (BOTDA). Optical fibre sensors were embedded inside the concrete during the manufacturing stage and attached on the concrete surface in order to measure the pile's full-length flexural behaviour under the prescribed serviceability and ultimate limit state. The relationship between moments-deflections and bending moments-curvatures are examined with respect to the lateral forces. Tensile cracks were measured and compared with the peak strains observed from BOTDA data which corroborated very well. By analysing the moment-curvature response of the pile, the structure can be represented by two bending stiffness parameters, namely the pre-yield (<i>EI</i>) and post-yield (<i>EIcr</i>), where the cracks reduce the stiffness property by 89%. The pile deflection profile can be attained from optical fibre data through closed-form solutions, which generally matched with the displacements recorded by Linear Voltage Displacement Transducers (LVDTs).
