This paper aims at examining metaphysical desires in The House of Mirth. Especially the heroine Lilly Bart is central. A Metaphysical desire can be described as raising one's own value. Lily longs to return to the upper class that once she enjoyed. The failure of her father’s business makes her status and pride degraded. She struggles to overcome her miserable status and raise to the status by means of an aesthetic aspect. Also her behavior includes political and imitative desires, such as tableaux vivants. As a French historian, literary critic Rene Girard mentioned, that one tries to imitate others is only to pursue their position, and in other words, it is referred to “mimetic desire.” In the end, her dream is frustrated. This explains that Wharton explores American society between the late of 1800s and the early of 1900s. In other words, for women it is hard to change for the better economical and social positions. Therefore, on behalf of Edith Wharton's works, The House of Mirth can be studied profoundly in respect of a metaphysical desire. (Hannam University)
