      • An Improved Region Based Active Contour Model for Medical Image Segmentation

        Level set methods have been widely used in image processing specially in image segmentation. This paper presents a new region based active contour model in a variational level set formulation for segmentation of real world images in the presence of intensity in-homogeneity and noise. In this paper, we derive a local intensity clustering property in the image domain with better distance regularization function. The level set methods sometimes develop irregularities during its evolution state, which may cause numerical complexity and destroy the stability of evolution. This distance regularization function is able to maintain the desired shape of level set function smoothly and eliminates the need of re-initialization of LSF. The local clustering criterion function is defined for image intensities in neighborhood of each point. Now, this local clustering criterion of point is then integrated with respect to the neighborhood of entire points for global clustering criterion of image segmentation. In which bias function is also evaluated to intensity inhomogeneity correction. Implementation of our method shows that, it is more robust to initialization, and more accurate than conventional model.

        Pulsatile unsteady flow of blood through porous medium in a stenotic artery under the influence of transverse magnetic field

        The periodic nature of the cardiac cycle induces a pulsatile, unsteady flow within the circulatory system. The pulsatile model of blood flow provides data to analyse the physiological situation in close proximity. The distribution of fatty cholesterol and artery-clogging blood clots in the lumen of the coronary artery is assumed as a porous medium. A mathematical model for pulsatile flow through an stenosed artery filled with porous medium in the presence of transverse static magnetic field has been formulated under the consideration of hematocrit dependent viscosity of blood that governed by Einstein equation. The velocity profile, volume flux, pressure gradient and wall shear stress are obtained and the effects of magnetic number, Darcy number, Womersely number are computed and represented through graphs.

        Instituting environmental sustainability and climate resilience into the governance process: Exploring the potential of new urban development schemes in India

        India is on the cusp of major transformation in terms of how it translates and directs urbanization. The recently announced flagship schemes of the Government of India – the ‘Smart Cities’ scheme, the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme, The Housing for All scheme – offer avenues for addressing some of the most daunting challenges that cities in India face today, including climate change impacts and disaster risks. While India has faced multiple climate-related hazards in the recent years, the frequency and intensity of extreme events on the Indian subcontinent has arguably begun to increase. While there have been clear entry points in the governance system and policy making through which the climate resilience agenda could have been integrated into urban development planning in Indian cities, it has not yet been done, largely due to the lack of realization of this very need among India’s decision makers. This paper discusses these issues in detail and outlines the gaps and challenges for bringing climate resilience into the mainstream agenda. Furthermore, it explores the possible avenues or entry points for integrating climate resilience into the urban development agenda through these schemes.

        Syndecan-1 (sCD138) levels in chronic lymphocytic leukemia: clinical and hematological correlations

        Background Syndecan-1 (sCD138) has recently been suggested to predict the clinical course of ear-ly-stage chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), but few studies have been reported. This study assessed the role of syndecan-1 in the prognosis of patients with CLL and its correla-tion with other prognostic markers. Methods This prospective study was performed in the hematology department of an Indian tertiary care center, over nineteen months (Jun. 2009‒Jan. 2011). Forty-nine new patients with CLL presented during this period and were included. Twenty age- and gender-matched healthy patients served as controls, and six patients with multiple myeloma were included as positive controls. Baseline serum syndecan-1 concentrations were measured for all patients at presentation using ELISA (Diaclone, Besancon, France). At baseline, patients were divided into low (N=10), intermediate (N=18) and high (N=21) risk cohorts. Serum syndecan-1 levels in these patient subgroups were compared with clinical and laboratory parameters. Results The median syndecan-1 level in patients with CLL (73.32 ng/mL, range, 28.71‒268.0 ng/mL) was marginally higher than that in healthy patients (63.10 ng/mL, range, 55.0‒75.11 ng/mL). At presentation, syndecan-1 levels in patients with CLL correlated strongly with symptomatic disease (cytopenias, P=0.004) and higher clinical stage (Rai stage III and IV, P=0.001) markers and poorly with 2-microglobulin level (P=0.270), diffuse BM infiltration (P=0.882), and surrogate mutation status markers (CD 38, P=0.174 and ZAP-70, P=0.459). Syndecan-1 levels dichotomized by the median value were higher with progressive disease markers, e.g. shorter lymphocyte doubling time (LDT, P=0.015) and increased treatment (P=0.099). ConclusionIn CLL, serum syndecan-1 (sCD138) levels at presentation correlate with disease burden, and higher baseline levels may predict early treatment.

        Kinematic Viscosity Prediction of Nanolubricants Employed in Heavy Earth Moving Machinery Using Machine Learning Techniques

        Recent researchers widely used nanoparticle additives for improving thermal and rheological properties of machine lubricant. In present study the effect of Al2O3 and CeO2 nanoparticles on transmission oil (SAE30), hydraulic oil (HYDREX100) and gear oil (EP90) of heavy earth moving machinery is investigated. Nano-lubricant samples are prepared in 0.01–4% nanoparticle volume fraction range. Four machine learning techniques namely decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), generalized linear models and neural network (NN) have been used to predict the kinematic viscosity for Al2O3 and CeO2 nanolubricants. Further, multi-criteria decision-making technique named technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution have been used to find the best predictive method in each category of the nanolubricants. DT, RF and NN methods are found to be most accurate in kinematic viscosity prediction of transmission oil (R 2 = 0.861), hydraulic oil (R 2 = 0.971) and gear oil (R 2 = 0.973), respectively.

        Aberrant myeloid antigen co-expression is correlated with high percentages of CD34-positive cells among blasts of acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients: an Indian tertiary care center perspective

        Background Aberrant myeloid antigen (MA) co-expression and high expression of CD34 antigen on the blasts of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients are independently reported to have a role in pathogenesis and prognosis. This study was conducted to determine whether these two parameters are related. Methods A total of 204 cases of ALL were included in an analysis of blast immunophenotypic data. CD34 expression was categorized as low when less than 50% of blasts were CD34-positive (CD34low) and as high when 50% or more were CD34-positive (CD34high). Results Of 204 cases of ALL, 163 and 41 were of B-cell origin (B-ALL) and T-cell origin (T-ALL), respectively. Of all cases, 132 (64.7%) showed co-expression of MA and among these, 101 (76.51%) were CD34high, while the remaining 31 (23.48%) were CD34low. Of 72 cases without MA co-expression, 25 (34.72%) were CD34high and 47 (67.25%) were CD34low. Furthermore, of 163 cases of B-ALL, 111 showed co-expression of MA and 84 of these were CD34high. Of 52 cases of B-ALL without MA expression, 22 were CD34high. Among 41 cases of T-ALL, 21 co-expressed MA, 17 of which were CD34high. Moreover, all 20 cases of T-ALL without co-expression of MA were CD34low. These differences were statistically significant. Conclusion We observed a strong correlation between aberrant MA expression and CD34high expression on the blasts of ALL. We hypothesize that these different patient subsets may represent unique prognostic characteristics.
